The menu is varied and includes crumpets, burgers, and a vegetarian and vegan big breakfast. They also have a selection of baked goods (vegan date scones even), raw cakes and other takeaway goodies. A prominent sign also advertised their ability to cater for those requiring fodmap friendly meals. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Chai and juices were delicious and the vegan big breakfast was actually big! An all round wonderful cafe in the heart of Belgrave.

Compared to what I'd usually eat, not so enjoyable, so I'll have to compare it with other vegan meals I've had and use the comments / opinions of the vegans at the table to guide me. We started off with coffee, they have cow juice for the carnivores :-) so happy with that and vegans all enjoyed their brews. My chickpea burger with chips was on a par with other vegan food I've had, so nothing outstanding here. None of the vegans were raving about their food so let's say good. My kids didn't like the Mac and cheese (not really cheese) so I had to buy more chips as they liked these. The kids also enjoyed their cows milk chocolate milkshakes. Those that had dessert were very happy. It cost $60 for 2 kids and myself, so fairly expensive for what we had. Those of us that had been there before agreed we enjoyed the food better last time, so perhaps it just wasn't their best day today. Will I go back, reluctantly, would the vegans go back, certainly. So if your vegan, definitely give the Powerhouse a go, if not, I'd recommend your journey takes you elsewhere.

Before dashing to the cinema last night, we decided to check out Lentil as Anything's latest…read moreincarnation in the Northern suburbs. Having a deep affection for the Lentil as Anything offerings available at Abbotsford Convent, I was keen to experience the variation on the delicious buffet theme closer to home. Understandably, the location of the smaller venue in High Street means that the beautiful surrounds and good natured bustle of the much adored Abbotsford address is not a feature, but I was still looking forward to sampling the food on offer with my similarly inclined Northern locals. We arrived to a fairly relaxed room, and just sat ourselves down at the end of the communal table, and waited for someone with access to menus to appear. Within five minutes or so, we were welcomed and presented with menus (this is a sit down and order version of Lentil, much like the St Kilda venue as I understand it), with volunteers working the floor. Our experience was pretty much chaos theory in action from the get go, with two people coming to collect our orders, my dish turning up a good 10 minutes before my dinner buddies' food, some confusion about what the dishes being presented actually were, and an extra dish being thrown into the mix. As I said though, people taking orders, presenting the food, (even perhaps cooking the food) are there learning in a volunteer capacity, so it really was more the case of looking on with gentle amusement than frustration about meal things - kind of like a 'dinner and show' deal. I ordered the tagine (a little bland for my liking), and my dinner companions both ordered the mixed curry (both agreeing it was quite delicious). In retrospect, maybe we should have kept the third plate of curry that was prepared by accident due to order mix-ups so I could have feasted on the curry dish as well!! In the initial craziness of the arrival and menu hunt, we failed to notice the specials board near the counter, so make sure you check that out too for variations on the menu offerings if staff forget to remind you to do so (I will be doing that very thing next visit...there was a pumpkin curry dish that sounded really appealing that I'm hoping will make a reappearance!!). As with the other Lentil as Anything venues, it's a 'pay what you feel the meal is worth' deal, how wonderful is that concept!?! More so I believe, because the people of Melbourne have embraced it enough to ensure this restaurant continues to grow across our fair city. While the 'meh' rating may sound a little harsh in the context of people learning to do great cafe / restaurant things for no pay, it was more a reflection of the blandness of my dish. This place IS relatively newish though, and IS a local venue I am keen to support, and IS just finding its feet a little, I'm quite certain, so I am keen to give it a another go in the very near future. The concept behind this restaurant, and people it tends to attract as staff and customers are worth waiting for Lentil as Anything 'The Preston chapter' to find the confidence and cadence of its big sister in Abbotsford. It's just a matter of time... :)

I got the big vegan breakfast plate which had tofu scramble, sourdough toast, bakon, avocado, vegan sausage, mushrooms, air fried potatoes, and sautéed kale. Honestly so filling and clean but very tasty. I didn't feel too full afterwards and they didn't use any oil so it didn't feel greasy when I ate it. The breakfast tacos were also very good. Similar ingredients like tofu scramble, avocado, bakon. But there was some salsa on there too. Very delicious. I heard the McMuffy, the vegan breakfast sandwich, is pretty popular too. They make everything from scratch. My sister even said it's the best vegan food she's ever had because it wasn't greasy but still have good flavor. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!
