It very rarely gets busy, possibly due to its enormous size for a restaurant situated in such a small suburb. It has a massive balcony which I have never seen used - a real shame. A bit of money spent on some nice outdoor furniture and a few umbrellas and Chinese lanterns and I'm sure that this place would thrive. As you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by a huge plasma TV set to silent with subtitles. I have to admit that a restaurant that needs a TV has predetermined the atmosphere before you even sit down. The Phoenix is overly lit with bright lights that unfortunately simply accentuate the awful decor. Sadly it's dull and listless, and when the air-con/heating is on, as it was last night, then hold on tightly to your menu as you choose your fayre, or else you'll be fishing it out of the marina. But I guess that the reason anyone goes to a restaurant in the first place is for the food, and this is where the Phoenix comes into its own; it's simply excellent! Even simple sate chicken and sizzling Mongolian lamb was a delight to the palate. Delicately spiced, and melt in the mouth - the dishes almost made up for the lack of anything else. Almost. And that's the reason that I eat here so often. Although to be fair - I mostly take away. To be honest the food was actually pretty decent. The thing is that both Chinatown and Port Adelaide are roughly the same distance away from my house. Given the option I'd head to the CBD any day. I know, I know: everyone gives the title of Adelaide's Best Yum Cha to Ding Hao or Star House - but this humble little eatery, smack bang in the busy Central Market International Food Court , has lots to recommend it. I end up getting my yum cha dumpling fix here 8 times out of 10. Why? Well, it's open throughout the week (you have to wait for the weekend to get the restaurant variety of yum cha) which is a good start; it's located in the Central Market, so I can get my deli goodies and stop for a coffee at the same time; and most importantly - it's really freaking good yum cha. The selection is plentiful. Personal faves include bean curd, which is cooked just right (soft and not too chewy), perfectly soft sui mai, and the BBQ pork buns are a dream in bun form. It all comes to you fresh and hot and with major flavour and lots of soy sauce and chilli oil. It's got all the staples you know and love, and even better you won't break more than a $10 getting your fill. And while it doesn't have fancy surrounds, the staff behind the counter are always friendly and the jam-packed lunchtime crowd of the food court has a charm all of its own. I've had yum cha at restaurants with Michelin stars. Seng Kee is better than all of them. Hands down. It's not even close. Seng Kee yum cha is the standard by which I judge yum cha. Once I did find it I was welcomed by friendly staff. Basic toasties at $7.50 and more adventurous toasties are $9.50, each with about 2 or 3 different ingredients. Looks like each toastie takes max 5 minutes to make and if you dine in, it comes with a little salad too. I tried the Tandoori Chicken toastie on recommendation from the staff and was not disappointed. Coffee was pretty good too. Great for a quick lunch if you're in the area, don't forget to leave a note on the blackboard too!

It's conveniently located in the newly revamped (check out all the new stores!) Central Market arcade, best located near the entrance coming in from Gouger St. The 'gourmet' toasties start form $9.50, they also do house shakes etc and a whole slew of other brilliant creations. If sweet toasties are you thing, they do that too! I got the roast pork, sauerkraut and cheese toastie with pumpkin bread which was pretty damn good. It comes with a salad as well which makes the meal perfect! I also go the Agro milkshake - give them a go! Protip: Come before or after lunchtime, it gets pretty busy and service can be lacking a bit.
