This was our very first pottery stop in Seagrove and I am so happy our B&B had us start here! I didn't know it until I made it home, but one of the closed shops I tried to go to (some shops were closed when we were visiting because they were working the state fair)- I did buy one of their pieces here on the first day! Calicutt Pottery- I was thrilled to see I snagged a piece of their art. My favorites here were from Seagrove Art Pottery- a husband and wife couple who make fabulous. brightly color, unique pottery! I did make it to their home store too- but I loved the pieces on display in this shop! This should be your first stop in Seagrove- because you will see a variety of local art in one building!

I met Nicole back in March, I was visiting Seagrove for NC Potters Conference. They had a meet…read morelocal artists night at the local wine bar and I was chatting with another local when Nicole arrived. She was in the brink of opening her own studio and shop! I followed her on IG & was returning in June for a birthday trip, so I made a mental note to make it to her place. I met her dogs, chickens, ducks & even gave her hubby some tips since he was learning how to turn pots. I bought a lovely dish from her then. Fast forward, I'm still following her on social & a that she has a new goal of building a new studio and shop bigger and better on her family property across the street from the current location. Move that goal post, chase that dream! So, Nicole is using clay from her property to make mugs that she uses a technique called sgraffito, carving through underglaze. She carved these cabin mugs as her vision for the new place and every one of those mugs sold is going directly into the build fund. Her goal, make and sell 100. I'm a very passionate person about the arts, ceramics. I also love connecting with people and adore seeing what other people's dreams are, what they are passionate about. The work is delicate and intracate and fully functional which when it comes to art is considered by some to be the best kind of art. The glass ware is something to see....translucent colors and delicate shapes. Pots of all shapes and sizes using very traditional gazes I could have dropped a few thousand dollars in here with all the items I fell in love with, but in the end I didn't buy anything. But I will be back another day and then something...more like somethings are leaving with me.

No worries- we made it back on Friday before departing and I was thrilled we did. There were lots of little pots I wanted but one particular glaze combo reminded me of a night sky or the spots on a whale shark. John was in agreement that it was our favorite! Vases brightly glazed and with intricate cutouts. Funky art that is just plane fun! I was told by other visitors to allow myself time to adjust to all the bright colors- but for me it was to adjust to how much they have packed into the space! There was just so much to see!!! Carol greeted me once I came through the door and her excitement just fed my own excitement! Carol and her husband have been doing pottery for over 31 years and started their business in Florida, only to move to Seagrove and bring their unique art to the pottery community. The two mix their own clay- a secret recipe of their own that fires at a wildly unique temp! Cone 1- if you know- you know. Fascinating conversation! John saved me from having to pick a piece of art to take home by spotting a wall plaque with a kitty- in their signature bright glazes. She is already hanging just inside my front door! I had seen that she did a collaboration with other women potter's in the area for a big fundraising event & the figures she created have this powerful, regal feel. Goddess, empress, high priestess... she has several in her shop of various sizes in addition to her lovely bee themed series! She's a bee keeper in addition to a potter, small business owner and who knows what else this powerhouse has going on! I remember being so impressed the first time I met her. She took me right out to show me her kiln she was unloading! Turns out, we share a common friend outside of Seagrove. Michael Cottrell. My school professor! They go way back. Very small world.
