During the pandemic, my wife and could not attend church services in person, and when things did relax, I had a series of medical issues that kept me out of the pews. During that time, my wife started following a couple of online Sunday services including the worship music and sermons broadcast from Burlpres. The staff prayed for me when I had a couple of surgeries. Their genuine caring was comforting. My wife and I were still enjoying the online services when a staff member invited me to attend Burlpres' start-up cancer survivor group in September 2023. I made several new friends at the group's meetings. My wife and I attended holiday services a couple of months later then decided to become regular Burlpres churchgoers. It's been great worshipping there for the past year. What makes Burlpres a great worship experience? The services bring heaven and earth and all people together in a weekly renewal of faith. Lead pastor, Rev. Graham Baird, leads most services. He is assisted by Rev. Jan Armstrong, and Rev. Elizabeth Frykberg. Their messages are thoughtful, uplifting and inspirational. Director of Worship Steven Hall's worship team is second to none. You cannot just listen to his worship team; you'll want to join in the singing. Burlpres is a small church that strives to make an impact wherever those in need of help may be found. Last fall, Rev. Graham visited a Christian church in Pakistan to bring donations and preach in support of young women forced into arranged marriages. This past week, Burlpres sent hundreds of pounds of clothing and funds to help victims of the Eaton wildfire in SoCal near La Canada. If you're new to San Mateo peninsula area and are looking to reconnect with God or start your personal spiritual journey, Burlpres is a good place to start. (The fresh scones in the lobby between services are delicious.)

I have been going to this church since I was very little-…read moreI have grown up in this church- and this year was the first year for my newborn and my daughter to go together to the sermon. Children's Service had nothing for children- weird 3D glasses & stickers, along with the pastors daughter being the center of attention as ALL the other children involved in the nativity scene remained outside. I left after the pastor decided to rant about HIS daughter and her prestige riding skills... it was like watching pure narcissism. And there was a rant about how expensive & hard it is to live here... ummmmmmmm I don't come to church to discuss Bay Area 1st world problems... it felt like this whole sermon was focused on ALL the wrong things. The petting zoo was nice... but how could that be the lesson for our children?? Seemed like a lot of it was just about getting money and seeming rich or something... very uncomfortable I for one HAD to leave. I regret going and decided to go for a walk downtown as my daughter stayed with family EVERY year- children have been the focus and brought in SO many new families. Children have sung songs, put on plays, and even read scripture- allowing for children watching to love it along with their parents. This year was dry, and only about the pastor... SO WEIRD I will NOT be returning to this church and I highly suggest looking elsewhere for children's sermons. This is NOTthe church I grew up in.

They have snacks waiting for you when you walk into the lobby that you can eat and drink while listening to the message. They have a live worship band/group that you can praise with. For those who have kids and haven't been able to sit through a message without interruption, no worries they have a special kids program where your kids can have time to learn and make crafts while you have your worship time. If you are looking for a church or would like to try a new place of worship I guarantee you will have an awesome experience at Gracepoint. Our family sure has.

Everyone is singing, dancing, and the atmosphere is genuinely so good, I've never felt so comfortable to let loose and enjoy the presence of God - the leadership is not only super balanced, but so wise. The pastor and/or an elder will probably treat you to a breakfast or lunch and get to know you but talking to them feels amazing. No judgement, you can definitely see how they influence the church with their openness and wisdom. - KIDS MINISTRY! It's amazing for parents, there are SO MANY KIDS AT THIS CHURCH! Such a family oriented community here. - Everyone I have talked to so far and have become friends with really take Jesus serious. There isn't a lot of two-facedness if I can say that. As in, what you see is what you get. - Lifegroups are a must! You'll get super close with the church family, and have such a positive and supportive small group to dive into life with as well as how to apply the Bible to our lives.

The very sweet and beautiful school you see attached to the church is NOT a Christian school. It is a Muslim school most incredibly amazingly. YOU not a Muslim will NOT be invited into the school side of the building. This is quite an amazing conglomeration of religions to say the least. Really appreciate having the church in the community though - clean historic and decorative. That's the best can be said.

The sermons by the senior minister, The Rev. Penny Nixon, are consistently thought-provoking, meaningful and very relevant. There is so much more I could say about the wonderfulness of CCSM. They are strong family of believers and the head pastor Brian Goodell is an amazing leader, humble, honest, communicator and example as all 5 of his own kids have been inspired to also join full time ministry and become pastors. Over the years I have learned and grown so much in my personal relationship with Jesus. Here you will learn the Bible in its entirety and truth and not skipping over any books or passages of the Bible, like I have experienced in other places. The worship is awesome and the conversations always encouraging. To some up this culture in one word, it is "intentional". 100%!! On several occasions, there has been loud conversation and activity while people are in the sanctuary trying to prepare quietly for worship and prayer. This makes it difficult to maintain a respectful and reflective atmosphere.I understand that staff have responsibilities to take care of, but I ask that greater consideration be given to keeping the space quiet when others are preparing for worship. I wanted to share a small suggestion regarding the way ushers are requested during Mass. Sometimes a tap on the shoulder happens in the middle of prayer, which can be a bit startling and can interrupt the prayerful moment. I was wondering if it might be possible to ask for usher volunteers before Mass begins or at another appropriate time, so that those who wish to help can volunteer ahead of time. I truly appreciate all the work that goes into organizing the Mass and the volunteers who serve the community. I just thought this small adjustment might help everyone remain more focused during prayer. Thank you for considering this suggestion.

The moment you walk in, you can feel the presence of a welcoming and faith-filled community. The people here are incredibly kind and genuine, and I love everything about being part of this parish. I've completed all of my sacraments at Saint Matthew's, and it's such a blessing to know my children will do the same. Haven't looked back since finding Mater Dolorosa. All of the COSJ priests here treat the liturgy with such great care and reverence. You can attend three different Catholic liturgies here as well! 1962 Missal, 1970 Missal, and the Byzantine Divine Liturgy in the monastery. You won't find many places like this anywhere. Highly recommend.
