The house band at Avondale is very loud and energetic. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you people. The kick bass drum rocked my body with percussion with each boom. I'm not sure if that's healthy or just too much exuberance. Hearing "Joy to the World" in rock-type rhythm was odd to this boomer. My early Jesus People days in the 1970's had Jesus Rock (Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Keith Green, Wilson McKinley, etc.) but it seemed more tame than what I hear at CCV. Is that a bad thing? I don't know. Maybe I'm just getting old and now long for the old-school hymns I used to tire of when I was a restless young man. "On Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. ..." 2. The best part of my 4 visits to CCV (twice to Avondale) has been the sermons. Well-polished speakers with an engaging style. I haven't gotten sleepy once. That's a good thing. But not seeing a real person up there is a downer. I watched yesterday's sermon again on YouTube later in the day. So maybe if I can't stomach the lack of reverence in the music, I can view the message online. Ashley's sermon was superb, as was Mark's (iirc) last week. 3. It is great that Bible passages are read and usually displayed on the screens. The Bible is our foundational literature. It makes me want to read more. No "feel-good" or "God will prosper you if you give..." false teachings at CCV. 4. There seems to be a revival of sorts occurring in American now. Coming to a well-attended church service is one thing, but all the smiling greetings don't plug you into the life of the church. A person needs to have a way to enter in, smaller groups perhaps. I have to explore that on my own, so it would be good to mention each Sat/Sun ways to become a real part of the life of the church. 5. The Avondale CCV had a nice mix of races and cultures in the service I attended, fitting to the Avondale area. One body of Christ. Great.

There always talking or on the phone talking to someone and always recording with their flash lights on, people are always coming in late . This place needs a little more ordinance in there. I went back today thinking maybe that experience was an exception. Unfortunately, it was even more pronounced this time. As you walk in, you're handed a card outlining different levels of giving you should strive for. Before the service even begins, there are slides on the screens about giving. After the songs, a gentleman came out to speak about giving before the offering buckets were passed around, while scriptures about giving played continuously on the video boards. Once that concluded, he went on to talk again about the card we received upon entering and the importance of giving. Up to that point, there had been no message about the Gospel--only repeated emphasis on money. Because of this, I can't comment on the actual sermon, as I didn't stay long enough to hear one either time. I'll be continuing my search for another church. I gave it two stars for the music.

To answer any questions on whether we like it because of the content they teach or because it is fun and entertaining, I'd say both. The approach to teach the Word of God and teachings of Jesus is just different. Rather than teach verse by verse, they teach through series. I think it just depends on how one's spiritual cup needs to be filled. I appreciate CCV's series approach because I feel like it meets me where I am, it applys directly to my life in the moment. For those that go to both CCV and your church, maybe they enjoy both, or fill their cup by hearing both, which is great! THe music is upbeat, pertinent, and most importantly, glorifying the name of our Creator. I also appreciate the abundant offers at CCV. THey have a leadership institute to build up leaders, CCV Stars which is a sports organization through the church for kids. The mission at CCV is to win people to Christ, train believers to become disciples and send those disciples to impact the world. The growth of the church should be a testimony as to their effectiveness to their mission. The amount of baptisms this year alone were unmatched in church history. It honestly is amazing to see. I have personally seen the lives of my friends and family change from attending CCV. So again, I think it really just depends on what each individuals need to fill their cup. In addition to all of that, do I find it fun and entertaining. You bet! I feel empowered and excited to serve each weekend, to be a part of a community that's sole purpose is to serve others. I'm catholic but that had no bearing on where I would go to feel God's in my heart and meet good people. After I saw and learned more about PVC, I decided to Introduced my grand children to church. Service's are set for adults service and different age groups children services. This way all are enjoying and understanding what they are learning/hearing. PVC is very welcoming. Every initial service may not meet your needs that day - but PVC is a place to go for many reasons. Since the pandemic they've worked to get back to a somewhat norm. If you cannot attend in person you can attend online. If you're attending on time or a little early you'll have the opportunity to be greeted by many. After service it's another chance to meet others. Yes, parking can sometimes be crazy but it's a huge lot and they are working in extending it. People attend church and running a little late you can change your parking preference. I'm no expert but I have experience what happens when I'm late . This week fun fun fun PVC summer camp. The musicians had passion for their craft but it was TOO LOUD for us over 65ers. The spotlights with steam coming through was excessive. Too much flash. The sermon was very good, and we appreciated God's word being preached in a professional and measured manner. This is a prosperous church, for sure. This is the first church I've ever been to that charges for coffee. PVC has a cafe near the sanctuary. When we asked about Bibles, the info desk said we could buy them at the cafe. Maybe they thought we meant the Bible reading plans. PVC is reaching many young people with their concert style services, but I wonder how deep the peoples' faith develops in such places and how else they are involved in the mission of this church.

Every time I have attended a Sunday service at this church, I have left more frustrated than when I…read morearrived. After multiple visits over the years, my concerns haven't changed, they've only become clearer. The Pulpit here feels more like a feel good ego booster than a place of Biblical Authority and Accountability. Topical preaching, as it is consistently delivered here, feels shallow and misaligned with what people truly need in this season. We are living in a time where the world is loud, chaotic, and spiritually heavy. Scripture makes it clear that we are in a battle, not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12) and people are walking into church desperate for truth, clarity, and spiritual equipping. Instead, the messages often revolve around surface-level topics like saving money, managing anxiety, or even personal anecdotes that feel disconnected from the weight of what believers are facing. There is a real hunger right now for solid, biblical teaching. People are not just looking for encouragement, they are looking for transformation through The Word of God. With biblical literacy at an all-time low, the responsibility of a pastor is not to entertain or lightly motivate, but to teach, correct, and equip (2 Timothy 3:16-17). I have yet to hear a message here from Pastor Tom that reflects the depth, authority, or conviction that pastoral leadership requires. 1 Timothy 3 lays out clear qualifications for church leaders: self-controlled, respectable, able to teach, and above reproach. Leadership in the church is not a platform for personal preferences or casual storytelling, it is a calling that demands humility and accountability. John 3:30 reminds us, "He must increase, but I must decrease." When that posture is missing, it shows. At any given moment, someone can walk through those doors completely broken, searching for something real, something eternal. That is not a small responsibility. That is a weight pastors are called to carry with reverence and seriousness. Messages should point people to Christ, confront sin, strengthen faith, and prepare believers to stand firm in a spiritually dark world, not simply offer life tips or light encouragement. After giving this church chance after chance since 2021, I can confidently say this is not a place where I have found that kind of leadership or teaching. It often feels like there is more emphasis on comfort than conviction, and more desire for agreement than accountability. My prayer is that leadership takes a step back, examines Scripture honestly, and realigns with what biblical shepherding is truly meant to be. The church is too important, and the times we are living in are too serious, for anything less.
