I was angry ALL the time, and I know it was hard to try to work toward any sort of compromise when I was like that. At some point, I had an A-HA moment when I heard "anger is the bodyguard of sad". It was absolutely a lightbulb going off for me... Being angry and lashing out protected the sad or frightened parts of myself. I do think that served me well when I was little and was abused...it's easier to take advantage of a meek little girl, but if I lashed out like a wildcat, I surely protected myself from further incidents. I never even realized that that's what I was doing. I mean...game-changer...and it only took me 44 years to find that out! Now, my husband and I can both recognize that when I'm feeling threatened (and I can feel threatened by even little things!) or unsafe, that this angry part of me storms the helm and tries to take over. I've learned through couples counseling and a smaller DBT therapy group, how to recognize this and not just let it rule the moment. This has been transformative and a real savior to our marriage. If you're willing to look deep & be inquisitive (instead of judgmental...toward yourself and your partner) then Rebecca can really be a lifeline and help guide you & your partner to a more cohesive partnership. (We didn't go into therapy saying "Hey, fix me!" My husband isn't perfect either, but we do both agree that figuring out why I was lashing out and not letting down my wall was crucial in OUR growth and development.) That was the first time he beat me and it continued for over a year and a half. It wasn't often, nor related to drugs or alcohol. It would just happen out of the blue. I stayed because I was too embarrassed to tell any one, or to leave, but I knew I needed help...and thus began a fifty-year search for a therapist that could help me get over my trauma. I went to many therapists, spent thousands of dollars, and couldn't find a therapist who understood why I couldn't get over it. It was purely by accident that I found Jason Johnson four years ago, and working with Jason as my therapist has been a life changing experience. Jason listened to me, he was calming when I related the horrible experiences I could not get past, he somehow understands how a woman feels about being abused and divorced at 20. I have had a sense of peace knowing not only that Jason is an educated professional in his field of practice but he is also compassionate and honest as well. When my grandpa passed Ihe did not have a will and the home was only in his name. Grandpa had three children from a previous marriage and no children from the marriage to my grandma. They have been together since 1979. So what this means is all of his property, to include the home, legally belonged his children and not his wife. Ain't that something? Little to say the relationship between my grandpa and his children was basically nonexistent. Mr. Stein was able to locate them and send them legal paperwork providing them with the ability to waive their right to his property. The way Mr. Stein explained the process to the children was straightforward to the point. The paperwork was signed and returned so Mr. Stein's office file the paperwork with the courts and all is well that ends well. Mr. Stein's office does a wonderful job, follows through with what they say they will do, has very good communication and charges fair fees.
