I take my family every year and it is always a pleasant experience. It's amazing the story of this family taking the time to put the Christmas Lights every year. Something I encourage is for people donating to them because they don't really push for that, but they always have expenses getting new displays or even paying for energy and their time. Unless you buy stickers they get a tiny little help with that. If you havent gone ever, prepare your mug with hot chocolate and take some cookies for the little ones and head out there and enjoy, hopefully you'll get to see Santa. read more

Christmas on Knob hill is only one house on the street that is spectacularly decorated for the holidays. Apparently, the owners have been decorating their home for 30 years. There are over 80,000 lights which are solar powered. You can take as many photos as you want (don't be shy!) and even talk to the owner of the home if he is out front. A visit to Christmas on Knob Hill is a Christmas-time tradition for many North County, San Diego residents. It is for my family. In fact, Santa Claus himself visits during select weeks (December 13-23, 2017 from 6:30pm -8:00pm)...check their website (christmasonknobhill.com) for the schedule as it changes from year to year. Lights and Santa are subject to change based on weather and availability. Bill, the gentleman/homeowner who runs this FREE light display is a kind man and decorates as a gift to the community. He is one of a kind. He started the large Christmas light display in 1988. He starts decorating the first week of October...you'll see why it takes nearly two months to setup the beautiful display. There are over 85,000 lights. I've enjoyed many great conversations with him and I look forward to visiting a few times throughout the holiday season. The lights are incredible and 100% powered by solar energy (for those that are concerned about conservation). Swing by and admire the beautiful lights and give thanks. Two years have passed since my last review of Christmas on Knob Hill so it's time for an update. I won't lie, even though I don't celebrate Christmas, sometimes I feel like The Grinch around the holidays. Only sometimes...but then I go to Christmas on Knob Hill. This house has been lighting up San Marcos for 30 years. Every year, there are a few different decorations and 'Santa' makes an appearance for pictures. They start setting up in October. You should follow them on facebook and see their daily updates! It's a busy road and parking is limited but you'll find something. People are always coming and going. My boys love seeing this house, especially the Star Wars decorations. Well, in San Marcos, they say - that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day. The timing is pretty constant, for the Christmas Light Display, between Nightly between November 23 - December 30, it is from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Santa's Schedule December 13 - December 23 from : 6:30pm - 8:00pm, and remember, Christmas Light and Santa's Schedule are subject to change based on weather and availability. Faq 1. When do you start decorating for Christmas? We start decorating the first week of October. 2. How many lights are there? Over 80,000 lights, 100 plastic figures, 20 rope light figures, 80 snowmen, 100 candy canes, etc. 3. How long does it take to setup the display? The display takes about 2 months to complete. 4. An absolute MUST SEE! I could not believe how many lights were up (this is only 3 houses but they are lit up with hundreds of lights on each house). It's so cool, and each decoration is so different from the next. There really isn't much parking, just regular street parking in front of these houses, so I recommend coming to see this in EARLY December, before Christmas time when it gets so packed every night. I think they also shut off their lights around 9 PM because I came by on different days and the lights were off right after 9, and even by 8:30 one night. People walk on the sidewalks to see it up close but unfortunately almost no one wears masks so that's up to your discretion of whether you want to or not. One of the older, very kind gentlemen who has a house intensely lit up here has a big sign on his lawn asking folks to wear their masks and do their part to slow the pandemic; this is super cool to me. 10/10 experience! read more

I prefer to just drive by a few times because parking and walking with all the people ( especially when I'm wearing pajamas), is not very practical. Other fun stops on the crawl.. Nice house with tons of lights! My advice is if you live or are in the area it's worth the trip but if your driving out of the way it's not really worth it. It's the only house on the block that really puts up lights or decorations so you can't really walk the neighborhood to see more lights. It gets really crowded and parking can be harder on the weekends. This house has some cool light displays and has a lot of old school decorations from when I was a kid!! There is a Santa here from like 6:30-8:30 pm which is free as well. The kids enjoyed it and that's what mattered the most, the owner is a real nice guy who sits and talks to his visitors. read more

2019 marks the 32nd year they have put up this display, wow. They have been collecting the lights that long, and they have vintage decorations which I love, like Garfield and Snoopy. Last year I went in the evening and it was really crowded with pushy uncivilized adults and excited undisciplined kids cutting in front. This year I went around 8:00 on a weeknight and it was not crowded, so I was able to get some nice photos without people in them. When Santa is there, I am sure it is super crowded with people getting photos with Santa. It's nice to check out if you're in the area or live close by. I am not sure it's really worth driving all the way from San Diego for. Lights are off at 9:00 sharp. The man who puts up all the decorations and lights told me to check out a house nearby, at 1849 Rees St (see pic) they have a giant tall tree decorated, so check that out too while you're out there. read more

Yes, a single house can be it's own attraction if done right. And this place indeed does it right, every Christmas, year after year, after year! If you live in North County San Diego chances are you have driven by this house on Knob Hill Rd in San Marcos, at least once. Most months out of the year it is a mild manured suburban home. But starting November you begin to see a transformation begin that only St. Nick, and an SDGE engineer can fully appreciate. Starting Thanksgiving they flip the switch and thousands of lights, figures and toys light up, sing, dance and most anything else Christmas related.. most. The sheer amount and variety of displays is "mind bottling". Santa shows up starting in mid December twice a week as I recall. There is most always a sign out front that will list the days the Jolly Guy will be out front, to plan for your little ones. Don't fret though, they have the lights on even if Santa isn't visiting that night. Lastly, the display stays up thru the new year. This place is worth the stop as it is truly a local neighborhood gem, and there are not enough of them around now a days! read more

So a few other people complained that it's only one house but it's such s great collection display that I continue going back year after year. A labor of love, this home is set up and the owner often comes outside and interacts with visors. Check the website before going on rainy nights and Santa also makes an appearance close to Christmas time. What a great free display of lights! read more
