This incredible shop is pretty much the Narnia of antiques. The shop front is only small, a modest…read morestandard size from the entrance, but boasts a hoard of items within. In the first section that you enter stands a whole host of tall glass cabinets, holding a number of gorgeous costume and antique jewellery items, medallions coins and other paranphenalia. As you move slowly through to the back, where begins the labyrinth, the rooms and corridors all fully packed with trinkets become apparent. Larger items are stacked -from boating bits, fire place accessories, old lamps, candle stands and more - throughout the space. There are rooms full of books and photographs, pictures and frames. Rooms full of furniture, some of which was utterly divine, some of which was ridiculously cheap. Rooms with clothing, rooms with knick-knacks, treasure boxes and more than I could possibly investigate as we were pushed on time during my visit. I wanted to delve further in, but alas my Dad was getting antsy and bored (no doubt hungry for lunch!), so we didn't get to explore the full maze of delights. This is a wonderful shop. They stock a huge range of fabrics - some of which cost as little as 2.99…read moreper metre. If you want to make curtains or cover furniture then this is the place to come. They stock mainly furnishing fabrics but also fleece, net and felt. And they have a couple of sidelines such as card making/scrap-book making supplies, beads and cutting foam to size. So the fabrics are good but the the service is amazing. I went in thinking about making a blind for a window. They had some material i liked but I only had the measurements for the actual window not for the amount of cloth I'd need. The guy there worked out how much I'd need, told me what else I'd need (tape, struts, cord, lining material) provided it, gave me some written instructions and when he discovered I'd never made a blind before pulled out from under the counter a plain blind for me to borrow so I could see what I was aiming out at, because, as he quite rightly said "it is sometimes hard to work out things out from written instructions". I've bought other things in this shop and the staff are always more than helpful. They really know their stuff and are very willing to share their expertise with you. I've made Thunderbird and bridesmaid costumes, beaded lizards, ribbons for young morris dancers, skirts and aprons with fabric and advice from this shop. They also run a curtain making service which they claim to be much cheaper than anything available with the Oxford ring road. I've not tried it but I'm willing to believe them. There is free parking nearby and buses from Oxford are very frequent (number 7a d 2). They are open 7 days a week.

I love browsing old antique shops. I rarely buy anything, but I love the feeling that hundreds of…read moreyears of history are in one room. Antiques on High has the proper smell of old things and has an interesting range of antiques. Rather than focusing on big pieces of furniture, which so many antique shops do, it uses its space wisely to host: Jewellery, books, records, clothes, ornaments, pictures, maps and various collectables. The condition of the goods varies, but they're priced fairly reasonably. I find it's best to go in without the aim of buying something in particular, but just to browse. I can't say anything has ever caught my eye enough to want to buy it, but I've seen plenty of other people who have found the perfect addition to their home or the ideal gift. The best bit is the craft section, where there's a gallery of jewellery, leather, pottery, glass and art in general, all produced locally and all promising to be valuable antiques in the future. There's a great range in here and you can get something for less than a pound or spend hundreds of pounds. Equally, you can pop in for a few minutes or spend hours browsing - it's almost like a mini museum. If you like antique shops, this won't disappoint; if you've never been in one, try approaching it. Don't be put off by the prison-like bars in the windows; the staff are friendly and it's a different world inside.

There was a sales rack outside with dressed from about £35. As always with these things, some were pretty hideous, but I was tempted by 2 or 3 and I wasn't even going in to buy a dress! There's a really good range of dresses from full-on ball gowns to simple cocktail dresses, with prices ranging accordingly, but you can definitely catch some bargains. There's a good range of formalwear for men as well, which can work out much better value for money than hiring a couple of times. The staff weren't overly friendly and it was a bit awkward as we were the only people in there, but they weren't rude and asked if we needed help. I didn't try anything on, despite being tempted, so I guess it's not as inviting as it could be. Definitely worth a look, but go in with a friend if you want some moral support.

I fell in love with a floor length, satin, chocolate brown dress which, to my delight, was only £35 to buy! They offer beautiful silver and diamond jewellery which is available to rent so no need to break the bank balance. The only reason i'm not ranking 5/5 is because they do not have a fitting room, so take a friend with you to stand hide behind and save your blushes!
