Three years ago (November 2022), our son was in a devastating e-bike accident that caused a severe open wound to his tibia and fibula. The ambulance rushed him to Scripps La Jolla, and by sheer luck, Dr. Christopher Urband was the trauma surgeon on call that day. We feel so incredibly blessed that he was the one who took our boy into the operating room and performed the ORIF surgery. What Dr. Urband accomplished that day was truly extraordinary. With remarkable precision and skill, he carefully reconstructed the shattered tibia and fibula, inserting a strong intramedullary rod from knee to ankle and securing it perfectly with screws. The result was nothing short of miraculous. Every follow-up appointment since then, when other orthopedic surgeons and specialists examined the healing, they all stopped and congratulated the work. They told us straight out that Dr. Urband had done a magnificent, extraordinary job--one that very few surgeons could have pulled off so beautifully. Because of his incredible talent and care, our son not only kept his leg, but today he has perfectly normal mobility and function, as if that terrible accident never happened. There were some early administrative issues with billing and insurance, but everything was resolved in the end. Christopher Urband, MD and the Torrey Pines Orthopaedic Medical Group were highly recommended to me by my Doctor and I understand why - each and every person I had contact with was caring, kind, experienced, and when we interacted able to be fully available. My initial visit was to determine what the injury was to my left arm. On the way to the appointment I drove over some debris on the freeway and one of the tires blew. I was able to get it quickly repaired and while that was occurring I called to let them know I would be late. The response was supportive, "Don't worry, we'll see you whenever you get here." I relaxed right away. When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Sue, the Receptionist, waited briefly and was warmly greeted by Chloe, Ortho Tech. She was gentle and attentive as she took info and blood pressure. I found the entire environment supportive and friendly. I met with Christopher Urband, MD. I found him to be an exceptional person - enormously kind and totally present. He listened with complete focus, his physical examination was gentle, and he honored my feelings and answered all questions with care. The experience with him was refreshing and comfortable - I knew I was seeing the right person. He suggested an x-ray and I met Leslie, the X-Ray Tech. And she too was gentle, listening and experienced - what a Group! Then I came out of x-ray and there was Dr. Urband with a big smile on his face saying enthusiastically, "No surgery!" I thought, wow a surgeon who takes another direction - how wonderful is that? He explained the humerus had a clean break, no bone chips and it was in perfect alignment. He then explained how I would need to navigate myself to keep it in position. He was very specific about the movements I could and could not do with the left arm and gave me a special sling that went around the neck and the wrist so there would be no pressure on the elbow and humerus. As during our first conversation of the day, he was gentle, caring and not rushed as we discussed the nuances of home exercises and how to sleep. Feeling much relieved I thanked him and proceeded to a different area in the office to arrange a follow up visit and second x-ray in two weeks. His Executive Assistant was away at lunch and another Executive Assistant was in the same area eating and working at her desk. She looked up saw me, put her food down and said warmly, "I can help you," so kind of her. We introduced ourselves, her name is Cedrina, and I thought, another wonderful person! On the second visit there was another warm greeting from Sue, the Receptionist. Alyssa, Ortho Tech, warmly greeted me and took me back to an examining room and attentively updated my information. I thought they're all so nice here! After seeing Leslie again for the second x-ray I met with Dr. Urband who was glad the bone had stayed in position and was healing as it should. Again, with care, he answered my questions and we discussed next steps. Then I met with his Executive Assistant, Lucy, to arrange the next appointment. I walked up behind her, she heard me and turned around with a huge smile and gave me her full attention. She was completely present and available, kind and helpful. I've had a couple of phone conversations with her and the same was true - so impressive! If I could, I would give Dr. Urband six stars (or maybe seven!). Dr. Urband performed a bursectomy and debridement of my knee in order to treat a septic bursitis. I had already been in the hospital, receiving intravenous antibiotics and wound care, for a full week before the surgery. During that time, Dr. Urband checked in with me every day to gauge my progress, always taking as much time as was needed to answer my questions and explain the various potential treatments. He didn't push the surgery, but instead gave me insight into all treatment options, their pros and cons. When it came to wound care, Dr. Urband took it upon himself to irrigate and drain my knee on several occasions when a nurse was unavailable. I had gone to Scripps La Jolla because the standard of care there is very high, but even amongst such a crew of outstanding physicians, Dr. Urband stood out as particularly knowledgeable and invested in my recovery. We ultimately did decide to move forward with the surgery, and less than 24 hours after, I was able to put more weight on my knee than I had for the entire week that I had been hospitalized. Full recovery was fast - I was able to walk without crutches after 3 days, and was back running and swimming within three weeks. If I find myself in need of an orthopedic specialist again, Dr. Urband will without a doubt be my first choice. read more

My son broke both his arms during a soccer game and was taken to Scripps Hospital ER where we were very fortunate that Dr Urband was the surgeon on call that day. He performed several operations on my son to fix his broken right arm and severely damaged left elbow. He was very attentive and spent time explaining exactly what he was going to do and what we could expect afterwards. We ended up spending several days in the hospital trying to get my son's pain under control as he does not react well to pain medicine and Dr Urband was very supportive of him during this time. Dr. Urband is one of the most caring and professional doctors I have ever met. He originally consulted on my elderly mother in the ER after she had a bad fall and fractured her femur. He took the time to chat with me, explain the diagnosis, and discuss options for treatment. We had follow-up appointments with him on 3 further occasions and he was always wonderful. He answered all of my mom's questions, gave us great care and advice, and was always a pleasure to work with. While this isn't a physician my mother has had a chance to develop a rapport with but since she's dealing with a painful back injury, she has been seeing this doctor in Ortho rather than her primary care physician at Scripps Ximed who she has been with for decades now. We were very surprised at his somewhat patronizing attitude and by the fact that he did not really add anything constructive to help get my mom literally back on her feet. At least she did have an X-ray so we know that nothing is broken only severely strained. It's sad if younger doctors or maybe doctors in general have become so fearful of giving patients any sort of short term pain medication which she didn't even ask for; she mentioned she took one or two older pain pills over the past week to try to get the pain under control. So let's let the 68 year old injured woman suffer because the 22 year old opiate addict is apparently dictating all patient care standards these days. I hope that this was an uncharacteristic encounter with this health services provider and that my mom will slowly recover over the next few months on her own. I see two Ortho specialists up at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines and have had nothing but excellent care from them so perhaps consider all of your options when making an appointment. read more
