i had total knee replacement on my right knee with this doctor. he is rude and discriminates patients. i was on workman's comp at that time. i was referred to him by my attorney and he was reluctant to accept me. he was dictating to his medical assistant and when he said my age he said in front of my face "old woman". i was 63 years old. i only had the total knee replacement on my right knee. he told me the left knee will be follow whrn the left knee heals. on my third post op appointment with him i asked about total knee replacement on my left knee. when he can schedule the operation. he said me in a loud angry voice " i cannot help you anymore" and he closed my chart in the computer angrily in front of his new medical assistant. on his way out of the room, he glared at me like telling me " get out of here" i cried when he left the room because i was hurt with his attitude towards me. years past after the total lnee replacement on my right knee and i still cannot forget how this doctor discriminated me and his face still haunts me with the glare in his eyes and in an angry loud voice saying " i cannot help you anymore" closing my chart with anger. i was a patient of him in San Diego. read more

In short, Dr. Levinsohn saved/extended my athletic career/lifestyle. Approaching age 60, I learned from a visit to his office that I had been without use of my right ACL for more than 20 years. (Bodies are amazing at compensating for lost functionality, but you do still need to knees.) The normal course of action in my situation would be a knee replacement, but Dr. Levinsohn acceded to my strong request for a full reconstruction. He took into account my health, fitness, and other factors, then made the decision to grant a reconstruction. I came do Doctor Levinsohn because I was having discomfort, pain and instability in my knee from a previous ACL and meniscus tear surgery I had a few years ago by a different doctor. He determined I needed a revision of my previous surgery because I'll just say it, the other physician didn't properly fix the issue. Doctor Levinsohn listens, is honest, straight forward and is very knowledgeable in what he's doing. He gives you options and doesn't force any decision on you. His office which I experienced could have a bit of a wait SOMETIMES but the wait is totally worth it! His staff is awesome as well! read more

Dr. Levinsohn is a magician! He has replaced both my hips. Since I'm pushing 70 yrs. old I didn't expect to be walking around without even a cane at 2 weeks post surgery. Dr. Levinsohn has replaced my brother-in-law's knee, sister-in-laws hip, a friends knee & hip and another friends knee, all with WONDERFUL results!!! We all feel that he has given us our lives back. He saw me in the hospital both Sat. & Sun. so it looks like he never takes a full day off. He is not in my current insurance network and I was happy to go thru whatever red-tape necessary to get him as my surgeon. He has a terrific office-support staff who are all very competent. I was referred to Dr. levinson from a client. She said he was hard to get into but worth the wait. So, called the office. They called me back right away and said they could get me in the next week! When I got there the staff put me with the other doctor ! They said Dr. Levinson was out of town. She Blamed the other girl and asked if she told me... Terrible way to run a business . Something needs to be done regarding the check-in process. Two different staff handle two separate set of doctors within the same receptionist space. Therefore, if you check in with the wrong one, they will not notify the others. I waited 45 minutes before I was told that Dr. Austerlitz's staff didn't know that I had checked in. This is not the first time I have waited so long. I understand staff is inundated but perhaps they could check in with patients who have been waiting. This does not violate HIPAA (federal law which protects patient privacy), this is just common courtesy and good customer service. Even a sign directing patients to the appropriate staff member would help tremendously and save frustration. Furthermore, while I was waiting, I noticed the staff call a patient on the telephone who had physically checked in within the last ten minutes to see if he was going to come into the office. This is laughable. In addition, I previously waited over an hour for another, separate appointment before I gave up and rescheduled. I would be happy to update my review once this issue has been addressed adequately. I feel that the doctors are excellent and competent and care about the patients. Unfortunately, they need to rethink their patient flow problem. Most of us do not have 2+ hours to spend on waiting to be seen and the actual appointment itself. read more

After two bad experiences with previous surgeons for my hip and my first knee replacements, I have finally found an awesome doctor! Yay! My first knee replacement was at the beginning of this year, and while the surgeon did a good job, he was very unprofessional and fat shamed me several times. It was awful. There were some others who wouldn't take me at my current weight. When Dr. Levinsohn would, I asked him why. He said research shows that there is no more of a risk doing surgery on an overweight patient as there is on a thinner patient. And he said, "I have compassion for what you're going through." Wow, that was a 180 degree turnaround from my last Dr! I had my 2nd knee replacement with Dr. Levinsohn 11 weeks ago. He released me the day after my surgery because I'm doing so well! He even called me his star patient at my 2nd post op visit! He's a warm, responsive guy. You know....normal? He doesn't seem to have that god complex thing I see in most surgeons. I have one good hip left. I'm praying my arthritis doesn't move in on that one too. But if it does, I know where I'm going for that replacement!! read more

Dr.Levinsohn is an amazing surgeon with outstanding medical ethic, I would not trust any other Ortho Surgeon with the care of my sports injuries. There is always some wait and bumps on the road as far as office visits but I find that when you are seen you receive the care and attention you deserve. Be aware that there is a long wait to get an appointment so be prepared, I think this just goes to show that he is always in high demand. Couldn't figure out what was wrong with my knee. Gave me a cortisone shot which was just a waste of time. Advised me I had fibromyalgia and to go back to my M,D. My M.D laughs at his diagnosis and gives me another referral to another orthopedic doctor which wasn't much better. I paid out of my pocket to go to Dr. Marshall in LA Jolla who is affiliated with Scripps and FINALLY got a proper diagnosis of a torn meniscus and knee cap off track. read more

I am writing this review because I was a client of Dr. Levinsohn and my injury was work related. I called him and he accepted my workers compensation case. He had done several x-rays and a MRI, where he determined that my right knee had a torn ACL and torn meniscus. We decided to schedule surgery and I also decided to go to the gym and try and strengthen my leg prior to surgery to help speed up my recovery time. Well the day of my pre-op, I went into Dr. Levinsohn office to fill out the paperwork for my surgery in two weeks. However, before I did he asked me how I was feeling and if I had any pain in my knee? I told him that it felt great, so he then asked me if my knee had buckled on me at all lately and I told him "no". Dr. Levinsohn is so professional and honest he literally told me to say no more and we were cancelling the surgery. I was shock, but he said that he wasn't going to operate on my knee if it wasn't bothering me. Remember, my case was a workers comp case and Dr. Levinsohn was so honest and caring that even though he could of operated and got paid, he took more consideration in me being his client then just wanting to be paid for doing a surgery that I did not need at that time. I am really surprised all of the positive reviews. Staff: horrible, unorganized, unfriendly. At least act like you like your job. The check-in process with their little computer system is painful. Dr: I waited 55 minutes to be seen. Seriously, staff told me to come 30 minutes early to complete paperwork and the physician was still 55 minutes late for my appointment...and he wasn't in surgery. When I did finally get to see him, he asked me about the pain I was having and right when I started to tell him my symptoms he said,"I'll be right back...I have to go give an injection." I had to wait another 15 minutes for him to return. While I understand he is a good surgeon, and yes, that is very important, I am a working professional and don't have time to sit in his office. read more

Dr. David Levinsohn is one of the sharpest Orthopaedic surgeons I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with. Due to my share of Rugby related injuries, he has repaired a torn bicep tendon I suffered three years ago, and most recently re-attached my ruptured Achilles' tendon. I'm very lucky the doctor has a passion for Rugby himself, and understands the nature of these injuries and what it takes to get you back in form again. My bicep tendon has mended well, and I am 10/10 as far as strength and agility goes. My Achilles' tendon is coming along well after only being 10 weeks post-op, and I am way ahead of the suggested protocol timeline. This I credit to Dr. Levinsohn's surgical skils, professionalism, and caring nature for his patients. Much props also goes out to the staff who are 'over the top' and the back bone of the day to day operation at Dr. Levinsohn's office. * Delilah, Reception - Always greets patients with a nice smile, and makes sure that they feel welcomed upon check-in. * Rose, Surgery Scheduling - Chills out in the back office with a nice window view making sure that surgeries are scheduled appropriately. She only comes out front if you bring chocolate in with you :) * Betsy, Medical Assistant - Cool, calm , and collected. Knows her job well, and has fun doing it. * Erika, Scribe - Enjoys what she does with a smile. Now I've read the complaints about long waits to be seen, etc.. As true as that may be on some days, the way I look at it is like this - if you want to be seen by the best in the profession, you have to be patient. Dr. Levinsohn is a very competent and caring physician. I never felt rushed in my time with him. However, dealing with his office is frustrating. Calls almost always go to voice mail are returned in one or two days. I recently had three appointments, all of which took place one hour late. Calling in advance to find out how late he'll be is helpful only IF the phone is answered. Sitting in the small waiting area, crammed with patients with their canes, wheelchairs , walkers, etc. is not very comfortable. Either his scheduling is being done unrealistically or else he is so good and has too many patients. read more

Let me just start by stating that Dr Levinsohn gave me my life back, and I mean that with no hyperbole. I can't possibly rate him or his staff high enough. Once I was referred to him, the entire process from diagnosis to surgery ran as if on rails. I have never felt as comfortable with a doctor, especially on such an invasive surgery, then I have with Doc Levinsohn. Dr. Levinsohn definitely earned his 5 stars here. I had a recurring shoulder issue that lasted about 6 months without getting better. I have played sports my whole life and am in tune with my body so I knew there was a problem but finally after doing x-rays, physical therapy, steroid shot and multiple doctor visits they allowed an MRI. They basically said there was not much to do and to take inflammatory pills before and after activity. Everything I love to do is with my right shoulder so that was an immediate issue. I was then reffered to Dr. Levinsohn, thank God! He reviewed my x-ray and MRI and even contacted a personal friend who was a shoulder specialist for a second opinion. Of course I had a torn bicep muscle and labrum and they ended up shaving my shoulder as well for bursitis when they did the arthriscopic surgery. Everything was explained and explained again as well as all options. In and out for the surgery and only needed one pain pill the night of the surgery. 2 months after and about 10 physical therapy sessions later I am about 70% of normal. I am confident I will be back to everything I love in a few more months. By the way the therapists wete amazed with my quick recovery and range of motion which i credit the Dr.Levinsohn. One note about the wait. I did wait a while at each visit but let me stress that you are talking about your health and best chance at full recovery and less time to recover which is the most important factor. At least it was for me, make your own decision. read more

I'm not one to leave reviews, but after the exceptional care I received from Dr. Levinsohn, I had to. I've been very impressed with Dr. Levinsohn from the first time I met him. You get a sense immediately that he really knows his stuff and continues to learn new things as an Orthopedic Surgeon. I've recently had my right total knee replacement and feel privileged that it was done by Dr. Levinsohn. He was faithful with hospital rounds while I was in the hospital and during every office visit from day one. You may have to wait like someone mentioned, but he is WELL worth the wait. I'd much rather have an amazing surgeon working on my body, than see another doctor who had no wait, but also doesn't care about his patients like Dr. Levinsohn does. Kudos to the staff too! Tracy, Betzy and Dr. Levinson's nurse (who is newer and I'm sorry can't remember her name) are amazing! I am writing this review on behalf of my husband who recently had his right shoulder and bicep operated on a little over 6 weeks ago by Dr. Levinsohn. I personally was quite taken with his bedside manner because I see specialists all of the time and in general, they can be rather distant and cold. Dr. Levinsohn on the other hand was very warm and personable, but most amazing of all, he had a wonderful sense of humor which brought some levity to a rather serious situation. More importantly, my husband and I could see that he was very capable and knowledgeable and explained everything in layman's terms. Meanwhile his assistant Katherine was right there busily taking down everything; she was amazing too and she was able to answer some pretty complex questions that most doctor's assistants would be challenged by. Now the most important thing of course is the surgery which couldn't have gone better. My husband actually snapped the tendon clean off the shoulder bone which Dr. Levinsohn skillfully reattached with his own technique! Now that, you must say, is pretty impressive. He accomplished this with three small incisions that you really can barely see. Now that my husband is going to physical therapy, they are all truly amazed at how well he is doing. Most people who are much younger than him are not able to do what he can on the first appointment and of course they asked who did his surgery! So the reason I am writing this is instead of him is because my husband is just turning 70 and is not much into computers. No hype; this is an amazing doctor's office. It starts off with a warm staff that is on top of their game. Referrals, appointments and surgery scheduling; no worries. This team is great! Next you will meet the Dr's assistant. She is so nice and crazy efficient. You will be amazed. Now the incredible part. You get to work with one of SD finest orthopedists. Like an ole trusted mechanic, Dr. Levinsohn has one goal, to get you back up and runnin'. He is so friendly and well spoken. He speaks to you in simple terms and explains all of your questions. Now if you have to have surgery, I would recommend no other. He arrives at the time he tells you and gets right to work. And the work is elite. I have trusted him with both my shoulders and knees. True story. I went in for my right shoulder a few months after my left. Dr showed up on time and got to work. During the follow up appointment, I asked the doctor if he didn't find anything. He said no, that in fact was a little worse than the left. I said I was asking because I can already do this. I had already gained movement back and was on a fast recovery. He actually did a Tiger Woods fist pump. The only thing that would have been more awesome would have been if he just dropped his scope and walked out the room. Although I did not get booked with Dr Levinsohn I want to praise the scheduler I reached at his office. She went out of her way to get me a referral to the surgeon I had wanted. Checked into my insurance and got me a new Referral number so I could have the doctor I knew and trusted. No one else seemed to care what I wanted but she did. I had right hip replacement surgery performed by Dr. David Levinsohn on November 17, after a wait of over two months to get it scheduled. The surgery went very well with no complications, and they tell me I am on schedule with recovery. My left hip is now giving me problems and I will probably have to have it replaced in the future. Sharp Hospital did a fine job with the operation and my hospitalization. Their private rooms allowed my spouse to stay with me overnight, which was very comforting. The care seemed excellent, and the staff very supportive. My only complaints would be a lot of noise even thru the night from a workstation right outside my room, and the staff leaving me propped in one position all thru the second night. Dr. Levinsohn seems to be quite experienced and competent, altho his manner is somewhat abrupt. At office visits, he left before answering all the questions I had, giving me no information about nursing facilities after the hospital, physical therapy, or what to do about the pain in my other hip. On two occasions, he left me sitting in the exam room with no idea whether the appointment was over. His office staff leaves a lot to be desired. Before the operation, I called four times to get the paperwork completed, and the staff never returned my calls. I had to camp out in the office before they would complete their work. I asked repeatedly about nursing facilities but they never gave me any information--neither did Sharp Hospital--until the day before hospital discharge Sharp suddenly presented me with three choices and asked me to pick one, with no opportunity to check them out. And then my first choice was rejected because they had no bed available. I ended up at The Cloisters of Mission Hills, which was very good, if very noisy. Again, during recovery Dr. Levinsohn's staff failed to return phone calls. At my post-op appointment, the nurse who removed my staples and sutures missed three of the staples, which the home Physical Therapy nurse had to remove. When home PT ended and I was to start outpatient PT, again his staff failed to tell me anything about it, and my home PT person had to call multiple times to get information from them. His staff was to call me on Thursday, Dec. 30, with confirmation of my outpatient PT, but they did not do so. I called on Dec. 31, but their office was closed, and after calling several times and being put on hold, the receptionist was very rude and refused to help me leave a message. Summary: Experienced, competent surgeon; a bit abrupt; no complications; good recovery; good facilities with minor complaints. Dr. Levinsohn's staff leaves a lot to be desired, hard to get answers, does not return even repeated phone calls; not pro-active; hard to reach; did not remove all sutures. read more

Finding Dr. Levinsohn was a blessing to me I had been suffering from pain on my right hip for so long and from the first time I saw him, he was very direct and honest with me. He was able to put me on his surgery schedule as soon as possible. I cannot be happier with the results of my hip replacement. Unfortunately I may need replacement of my left hip, but if I do, I know I will come back to see Dr. Levinsohn because I know I will be in good hands. Fixed my husbands rotator cuff and ruptured bicep tendon when other doctors told him that they did not need repairing and to live with the pain. Now he is active again and playing volleyball. I agree with the other comments. I waited over 1 1/2 hours past my appointed time to see Dr. Austerlitz. At one point I asked the staff how much longer and was told another 5-10 minutes. I waited another hour! The doctor's there are great but definitely are over booked and have incompetent staff to support them. There was not enough room/seating in the waiting area and patients actually had to wait in the hallway (some of them with casts on their legs/feet). At no time did staff address the LONG wait or apologize. read more

I've unfortunately had a couple sports med accidents, including a previous Achilles repair with another doc, so I've been around the ortho world. My experience with Dr. David Levinsohn, his staff, and partners, was wonderful. I couldn't have asked for more. This review goes on forever, so I'll start with saying that Dr. David Levinsohn is talented in surgery, knows the latest medical advancements/studies, and has a warm, patient personality!!!! He and his staff and partners are an all-star team. I am extremely diligent with my healthcare (gotta be your own advocate), and asked a TON of questions, yet dr. Levinsohn patiently and thoroughly answered each one, pacifying my concerns. First of all, after being examined by two other docs in Utah, it was dr. Levinsohn and Dr. Austerlitz, who were able to correctly diagnose my knee problem that was much more complicated than a simple acl tear. Thanks to their due diligence and flagging my MRI to the head of radiology to reexamine my scan, they accurately diagnosed my condition. After this, they reexamined me at the end of their day and ended up taking a full two hours looking at my knee, explaining the extent of the damage, and walking me through the surgy procedure that they were able to immediately line up. I left the office already knowing that I was in extremely capable hands and while I was scared as sh-- for what was to come, my mind was at ease knowing I'd made the right choice with my physician. I ended up finding that I dislocated my knee, anhilated my acl, partially tore my mcl, and partially tore my LCL (apparently a difficult feat to accomplish this much damage). Anyways, I went under and dr. Levinsohn reported the surgery went perfectly - better than expected. Dr. Austerlitz even came to assist, if needed, toward the end of surgery. I had an allograft acl replacement and the other two ligaments are healing naturally. I had the surgery about 7 months ago now, took 3.5 months disability to fully recover - treating my physical therapy like a full-time job, and am beyond pleased to share that I'm well on my way to recovery. Honestly, I had no idea my recovery could be this amazing, thanks to dr. Levinsohn (and his staff, rose, Betsy, and Delilah as well as dr. Austerlitz, pacific beach physical therapy and even dr. Freeman, Levinsohn's other partner who took two of my after hours calls and I've had the pleasure to meet a few times - I love that he knew my case inside and out before I even met him and needed after-hours help!!!). I can really go on and on and on about what a pleasure it was to see dr. Levinsohn. I just can't say enough good things, and neither can my dad who accompanied me to numerous appointments. My dad went to the famed dr. Stone clinic years ago for his acl repair and was equally impressed with dr. Levinsohn (if not more so). I mean, dr. Levinsohn even took amazing pre and post surgery precautions with me, including having me on lovenox (blood thinner administered via twice daily shots) post op due to the risk of blood clots, thanks to the severity of my injury. But now, I'm well on track to run, hike, ski, do Pilates, yoga, etc. once my final restrictions are lifted in march, a year out. After my Achilles, from which I never really recovered, I am feeling better than ever. As a 30-year-old active woman who loves working out and pushing myself, I'm thrilled to know that this knee injury won't hold me back. Again, thanks to dr. Levinsohn and pacific beach physical therapy. I've had crappy docs and good ones and dr. Levinsohn is the best doc ever. Admittedly, waiting room time may be a teensy it long at times, but don't let that deter you bc it just means he is giving excellent care to others and you'll be up next. What's a few extra minutes when this guy has the future of your mobility in hand?! Dr. Levinsohn is the best ever!!! And I never ever write reviews .... Thanks to him I just returned from 16 days in Europe walking around and even climbed the Eiffel Tower, just 5 months post op! I'll be sending postcards to everyone for the rest of my life. My 19 year old son dislocated his shoulder when he was 17 surfing and afterwards kept dislocating it over and over, even during sleep. We were referred to Dr. Levinsohn by our primary care MD and as he was on our health plan, off we went. Dr. Levinsohn was great with him! My son had never had any health issues and was nervous as it became clear that surgery was his only option. Dr. Levinsohn explained everything in layman terms to him, spent the time he needed, we had great experience at the Sharp Outpatient Pavillion for the actual procedure. Dr. Levinsohn called himself afterwards to check on him and when my son had a reaction to the pain medication, Dr. Levinsohn was attentive and caring, calling daily until it was cleared up. My husband had his knee replaced by Dr. Levinsohn in August of 2015. He had a long difficult recovery period which, from the beginning Dr. Levinsohn said he would. The end result has been a very good one. We are both extremely pleased with the doctor and his staff. The doctor has great bed side manner, sense of humor and was there for us every step of the way. Above and beyond what we expected. We highly recommend him as a skilled surgeon. He has an extremely busy office and I think it's because Dr. Levinsohn is such a great doctor and in high demand. Sometimes the wait may be long or getting through on the phone not easy but in the end they will take great care of you. Just received a total hip replacement done by Dr Levinsohn and couldn't be more pleased.Very professional in the way I was treated and everything was explained to me in a way that I could understand without getting too technical. I am now at 4 weeks post surgery and feel 1000% better than the first day I walked into the office. A bit more muscle work and finish letting things get back to nornal and will be better than ever. With regards to the negatives regarding waiting time and staff sounds like we went to 2 different offices. The Dr and his stqaff couldn't have been more accomodating to me, and I had a difficult situation to deal with. I live in Thailand and had to come back here for the surgery due to insurance. The 1st Dr. I was working with was one I had visited a couple of years prior. We were all scheduled for surgery when 10 days prior to surgery my insurance notified my Dr. that she would not be covered by my plan. I was told that my insurance would only cover 3 doctors in San Dieg for this procedure,1 being Dr. Levinsohn. Though he had a full surgery schedule he said he could manage to fit me in. So he changed some of his plans around to get me taken care of as he knew I didn't want to go back home and return 2 months later. Everyone in the office was very helpful and went out of their way to make things work. I never waited more than 10/15 min. to be seen. Dr. L looked at everything and told me that I had 1 of the most messed up hips he had seen and it needed replacement asap. He said he was leaving the morning after my surgery for his brothers wedding but promised everything would get done before he left. Follow up appts. no problems, again waited 10/15 min to see the Dr. He explained what was going on and what rehab procedures to continue with, gave me a copy of my xrays and asked me to call him in 1 year to let him know I am getting along. So from my experience I couldn't have been treater better than I was by Dr. Levinsohn and his staff. As far as the people complaining about wait times, seems odd that it keeps happening to the same people over and over again, and every time I checked in I was asked which Dr. I was therre to see. read more
