I capped off the meal with an American (£2.40), which was definitely above average for UK -- seems like the place is run by Italians, so that might be it. As the first dish arrived, a warm noodle dish with a fermented bean sauce that I've ordered at countless Chinese resistants over the years despite repeated punishing disappointment, I was shocked to find it to be... perfect. Just the right amount of rich meat flavouring, no bitterness or cloying sweetness dominating the dish, and perfect ratio of sauce to noodles. The best version of this dish I have eaten outside of China. Then I tried the next dish -- again a commonly available and frequently ordered seared green beans with some spice and minced meat. Disbelief began to set in -- this was the best version of this dish I had in my LIFE. I began to wonder if I had accidentally starved myself for a week to make everything taste this good. Maybe I was going insane from infrequent Chinese food consumption. Maybe I needed to eat at a trashy Chinese restaurant to make sure I was properly calibrated. How could this random restaurant on Queens road, full of eateries that don't even have to be good because they get tourist foot traffic, be blowing my mind? We ordered yet two more dishes. The "Chinese Burger" -- our server admitted he just couldn't find a decent translation for the dish -- which consisted of fatty shredded richly flavoured meat not unlike the Chinese version of the shredded whole roast hog sandwiches that have recently joined London food markets in Southbank Centre and Borough Market. Much like my discovery of Polish lard spread with bits of bacon, the flavour put me beyond caring about the fat content. We finished with a Hunan tofu dish that, again, was stellar and for me an interesting contrast to a lot of the Sichuan tofu preparations I've tried in the past. Unusual for Chinese restaurants in the area, the server/owner was really friendly and chatty, talking about his idea behind the restaurant and photographing the food for the pictures in the window. It was a really warm welcome and only made me more excited to return. The only caveats are the small seating availability (it wasn't crowded -- yet -- but they only just opened a week ago) though they do takeaway, and the fact that the English menu is different from the Chinese menu, and contains an odd assortment of things mostly that people who don't really like and/or know Chinese food could order. It's ridiculous and you should order from the pictures in the window or ask the waiter what is actually on the Chinese menu. I begged them to translate it before I left. I'm still really confused about how every dish was beyond delicious. I will have to go eat at the lowest rated Chinese restaurant on Yelp, a Michelin starred one in London, and here again before I will probably be able to truly believe this magical experience really happened and can be had anytime I'm willing to spare a 5 min walk and £15pp. You think I'm joking, but I'll report back after I'm sure I'm properly calibrated.

A…read moreblessing because, let's face it, these are some of the best burgers I've ever tasted, and a nightmare because it's going to be hard not to get one every single day... Set up in a tiny, shack-like kitchen just beside the Giggling Squid, Brighton Burger serves hearty, honest, flavoursome food. Their menu is wonderful, hosting many unusual eats and obscure burgers - from wild boar to buffalo- but they also server your usual burger and fries to a very high standard. The burgers themselves are almost moist and full of flavour. So moist, in fact, that my takeaway burger soaked through the paper bag (my only teeny complaint!). This can be forgiven though, for as soon as you bite into the juicy burger, cuddled by sweet, soft bun and topped with whatever glorious accompaniments you opted for, everything can be forgiven. Literally everything. This last visit had me trying out the buffalo burger, which was absolutely delicious! Not as different tasting as you might expect it to be, but certainly different enough that you notice you're tasting something new and out of the ordinary! I added chips to my order and they came out, all thin and crispy, just how I like them! I almost typed there were 'too many chips' there, but let's be honest there's no such thing. There were loads of them though, in one portion, so maybe share between two if your appetite is not massive! The man who served me was pleasant (they always are!) and the service was quick and painless. The burger and chips came to around £8 which, though not the cheapest in Brighton, is so so reasonable for the portion sizes and quality of the food here! There's also a few tables and chairs dotted out by the front of the place, so you can sit in the sun (when it's about) and enjoy your burger in peace, watching the world go by! There is something here for you regardless of what kind of burger you like. Purists ought to grab the eponymous Brighton Burger, but even if you want pulled pork there's a sandwich for you in the Tennesse Terror. Rest assured, the patties are succulent, the unique buns are always on point, and the veg is top notch. Just look at the photos and try this place out.

Nando's only location in Brighton city centre is located on Duke Street, despite having three…read morelocations in Brighton and Hove (one in Hove, one at the Marina) this is probably their main and most central location in the city, which is within walking distance of the Pier, Railway Station and main shopping area (Western Road and Churchill Square) One thing which sprung to mind straight away on seeing this store is how cramped it was, the store was tiny on the ground floor, with a larger area with the traditional Nando's open kitchen being on the upper floor with one or two stairs separating them, which for me makes this one of the most poorly designed Nando's stores as you walk into the store, to reach the waiting area straight away, meaning when busy it can feel so cramped especially for the tables sat on the lower floor, and there isn't too many either. The bar to order is also pretty small, again when busy and there's queue it could cause many issues with the surrounding tables and waiting area, the whole design of the store isn't thought out well, especially when it is busy, and considering I visited on a weekend after watching Manchester City lift the Premier League trophy with a 4-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, it was busy so felt really uncomfortable for me. The staff seemed friendly enough and accommodating, but I felt the wait for a table was too long, especially considering they seemed to be sitting down people who had just walked in ahead of me. They did offer me the chance to come back, which I declined hoping it would only be 10 minutes as they promised, it was slightly longer. My food quality again was poor, I ordered my regular Nando's order with a twist - Medium chicken butterfly (chicken flavours were good with the medium sauce as always from Nando's, but the chicken tasted worse than normal as it was a little chewy and a lot tougher) - Peri-salted chips (could have been cooked for a little longer for more flavour and crispiness - Corn- I'm sorry but it was dry as fuck, it was like biting into mini yellow balls of sawdust on a stick, added to the fact it was underseasoned and a little undercooked and they had forgotten the marinade I'd asked for. The staff were too busy to come over during my meal too, which was a disappointment. Nando's is a chain I love and I'm a regular at, but again this is another one of those chains I noticed on my recent Brighton May 2019 visit, which doesn't follow regular standards and it is a real shame to see a store constructed so poorly, with food which doesn't meet expectations too. I'd even say a relocation to a larger branch with a focus on improving the food quality is a must for Nando's in the future, but with this branch open for over 10 years based on previous Yelp reviews, I sadly doubt that is a possibility, despite the fact Nando's has been hyped up and grown so much of late.

For dinner, I sat at the communal table and ordered the Set Menu (Veg), which started with a huge platter of pappadum along with pickled onions and three different types of chutneys/jams. Then there was the Chilli Pickle Cornflake Mix, a reinvented version of "Bombay mix" containing cornflakes, lentils, peanuts, chickpeas, flaked rice, cashews, pecans, raisins, and more! This was so crunchy and delicious that I even asked to take the rest home after the meal! On the waiter's recommendation, I tried the pani puri for my appetizer, a typical Indian street food made of puri (a deep-fried puff) filled with potato, chickpeas, and chutney--it also came with a tamarind water on the side, which you poured into the puris before eating. While this was an interesting dish, there was very little flavor to the little puffs, and I thought these was skippable. For my main, I chose the Punjabi Aubergine Curry, made with soft pieces of eggplant in a sauce of tamarind, coconut, and peanuts. It came with a cucumber/tomato/red onion salad and a huge, fresh piece of onion roti on the side. The onion roti was pure perfection--the edges were puffy and chewy, while the inner part was thin and crispy; it had a nice nutty flavor from the whole wheat flour and was the perfect vessel for dunking in the curry! Overall a decent dish, but the flavors and spices were definitely toned down, and the sauce had a more sweet/mild flavorful than other Indian curries I've had.
