As someone who has never climbed before, I had a really positive first time at Climb Nittany. I…read morehave quite a few friends from school/work who climb multiple times a week, one with a membership who offered to take me and show me the ropes (pun intended). Since I'm not the bravest soul, I didn't really do much research into climbing before I went for fear it would turn me off and I would chicken out, so I really went into it without much of an idea for how it would go. The staff got me checked in, and I had to watch a safety video in order to sign their waiver. I think you can technically watch it before you show up there and sign the waiver ahead of time, but I didn't do that so I spent a few minutes sitting down to go through that. Once I got that figured out l, they had me do a brief 15-20 min training on using their auto-belay system (so you can climb and be belayed without needing a friend to hold the ropes for you). The training was thorough and the guy (I think maybe the owner) doing it was nice and reassuring. As I said earlier, I have been in an introverted funk not trying new stuff so this was big and scary for me, haha! After I finished the training and check-in with rental gear, I tried some of the bouldering routes and then did two tall climbs. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be, but I think that's partly because I thought I would be terrible and embarrass myself. But they have lots of options for easy routes (green is the easiest!) and there are people of all skill levels in the gym so if you take a break you can usually still learn just by watching others around you. On a more technical note, the building itself was super clean, the rental gear all seemed clean and well maintained, and the staff were super friendly and definitely made me feel welcome as a newcomer to the sport. There's a small "normal" gym in the corner with a few pieces of equipment like an exercise bike, too, for warming up or cooling down. A few final thoughts- I am definitely going back! Climbing is a pretty cool sport and a great workout. Plus it's pretty social, and after the year(s) we've had lately, social activities are especially nice. I also kept thinking how cool it was so many kids go there to climb, and how it would be awesome to have a birthday party there with friends (regardless of age!). Their prices are a little high but it definitely gets cheaper if you lump together (I.e. the 10 visit pass or a monthly membership are cheaper per visit than a single day pass), so keep that in mind.

This ended up being a super fun stop for us when we had some time to kill in State College. I…read morevisited with my two daughters aged 12 and 10. I thought the prices were very fair. We got free rentals because we were first time customers. Our belay instructor was very sweet and patient with us. It didn't take too long for us to train so we could go up. There were enough climbs to make it interesting and we didn't have to wait even once. The best part for me was how clean it was. Not always the case with climbing gyms and always a nice surprise!
