They showed up on time and had all the right equipment. They were professional and friendly. There three guys and they all worked well together. They knew exactly how to trim a tree without damaging it and leaving it looking natural. They used clean and sharp tools so they don't cause damage to the tree itself. Since my trees hadn't been trimmed in a few years, it took them all day to trim 5 Podocarpus trees and three crape Myrtle trees as well as an additional tree in front of our bedroom window. Chuck and his crew recently did an amazing job of trimming our large California pepper tree - they got rid of all the dead branches, made sure there were no cracked branches, opened up the canopy to keep it healthy and let more sun reach our solar panels, and shaped it carefully so it looks balanced and natural. They also took care of our palm trees, cleared accumulated leaf litter off our roof, and cleaned up a few trees out front. I highly recommend Chuck and his crew for your trees. Chuck is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to and the crew were professional and hard working. Sadly I had a huge tree die and he brought a crane in and did the job right. This was not an easy job but there was no damage to the block wall or retainer walls in my yard. They even took the time to save the small plants nearby from being destroyed in the process. Then they used only hand tools to trim and prune the rest of my trees. That large area of my yard was all dirt and weeds so they removed the weeds and covered it with wood chips for better water retention and weed control. As a bonus, I have less dirt blowing in the house from our constant gentle breezes. They cleaned up beautifully! read more

Pro's-His crew works hard and seem to know what they are doing. They were very respectful of our home. Con's-Very expensive and not clear on the exact pricing. In the end he charged WAY more that what we felt was communicated. When questioned Chuck got angry. It is unfortunate as we won't use him again. Beware and request a written quote. We paid his bill but were left with the feeling of being ripped off and a stomach ache. Not everyone has spare $1000's laying around. read more

I have about forty mature oak trees on my property.  I wanted to engage someone who would care about them as much as I do.  I  hired Chuck and his crew of three - Greg, Willie, and Miguel and I could not be happier with their work. They were a pleasure to have around.  They were on time every day, excellent at communicating what they were doing and why, and didn't hesitate to ask me if there was any question about anything. They mostly used hand tools, cleaned up at the end of every day, and texted to let me know when they left.   I am actually looking forward to having them back.  I had no idea my trees could look this good. Please know that this is a small company, and Chuck answers the phone.  He might not get right back to you because he is working. I know you can find a less expensive tree service, but if you are reading this review you probably know how expensive it is to remove a dead tree because someone who didn't know what they were doing killed it. Chuck and his team are real professionals who know about trees and care about them. Over the years we have had several so-called tree professionals and companies work on our trees. None of them have been satisfactory - at best they only do the minimum, at worst it is a massacre. This time, it had to be someone who knew what they were doing: we had several large trees - city trees but the city only does minimal maintenance and these were getting to be dangerous. They also worked on several of our own Cal. natives and a citrus. Chuck and his team were fantastic. He came in person some days before to look at what needed to be done with me, we talked about it, and they came on time as promised 2 days later. They were extra careful with the large trees using a crane to extract the biggest branches and they took care to protect all the plants on the ground. They made sure the city was OK with the work. Chuck's tree service is a very professional operation. They are extremely careful to avoid injuries, especially to their clients. They warned me where not to stand and even the guy in the tree was careful where he dropped branches. Chuck's tree service saved me many hours of work taking out some cement fence footings that I was trying to dig out. It didn't even occur to me that a tree service would be able to do something like that. They have an extremely impressive machine that can lift out the footing out from the ground. I just had Chuck and his crew trimming trees at my house for two days. I have a lot of trees, including one that needed to be taken down, but the reason they were here for so long is the meticulous care they took in pruning every tree. With very few exceptions, all the pruning was done with hand tools, including a very tall jacaranda tree. (I've already had people come by with compliments on the job they did with that tree.) Most of my trees are on the edge of the property, and provide the privacy screen for the property, so they had to take these factors under consideration. This was particularly true for my trees that hung over a school playground and were growing into the trees on the parkway. Chuck explained his rationale for everything he proposed to do, whether from a safety standpoint or because the pruning now would allow the foliage to grow in better with ultimately better screening. Now, one day after the work was completed, even though I watched the entire process, I am still amazed at how the crew was able to shape the trees and still keep most of the privacy screening. The three men who did the actual pruning were a pleasure to have around. They were polite, wore masks and explained everything they were doing, even though I might have driven them nuts because I watched everything and asked questions constantly. They also cleaned up everything and left things looking better than when they arrived. As others have said, if you are looking for a bargain, this is not the company to choose. Chuck and his crew are consummate professionals and in many ways, artists, as they painstakingly prune branch by branch. While it is not cheap, my trees "make" my property and for that reason paying for the best is, in the long run, a bargain. read more

We used Chucks Complete Tree Service to trim several large trees. They arrived on time and got to work. His trimming is very detailed, no chain saws. Chuck only trims trees to the arborist standards. My trees are beautiful and i feel like I am at Disneyland when I turn into my driveway. I have seen what other less expensive companies do to trees and I did not want that. We were fortunate to find Chuck's Complete Tree Service. Chuck planned and oversaw the whole process. The crew he enlisted used a crane to lift the trees out whole, placing them beside their truck. They were on-time, well organized, and cleaned up nicely, removing nearly 30 trees without a scratch on the pool, block walls, or anything in the yard. So last week I was watching someone's cat for them and she came over to visit it and it jumped out of her arms and climbed a 20 ft tree in my backyard! After more than an hour of trying to get it down and by this time it was 5 p.m. soon to get dark I Googled tree trimmers and called Chucks Tree Service. I explained to him the situation and by that time it was after 5 but he still said he would send somebody out and we would get the cat. He even said he doesn't charge for something like that but since it was after hours maybe we could give his guy a tip. Sure enough they came out and rescued the cat and the owner was extremely grateful. Beautiful tree close to house lost 2 major branches in 2 days. Insurance would not cover it since no damage to structure. Called Chuck at 9 am. He arrived at 9:30 am, gave excellent advice and explanations. Decided to get tree completely removed. He went and got his equipment and completely and safely removed the large tree, ground the stump below ground level and cleaned up the yard of all debris. More importantly, he was not rushed, carefully directed the job and did the job quickly and efficiently without endangering nearby structures. If you care about your trees and property and need trimming or removal service, you can't do better than Chuck. He knows what he's talking about and answers your questions. Found Chuck's Complete Tree Service listing right here on Yelp. There were zer0 reviews but the other rated tree services were too far and would not service my city. So I called Chuck. He answered the phone himself and told me he'd come over to the property to give me an estimate. I waited on the said time/day but he never showed up. He did show up the following day when I was not home, took a look at the trees and gave me an estimate over the phone. The price was competitive and he seemed very knowledgeable about trees. Here's where it started going downhill. He set up a time to do the job after I accepted the quote. Never heard back from him, would not pick up the phone or return calls. At this point, I should have just gone with someone else... but, a week or so later, I called again and many voicemails later, got through to him. He promised to take care of it again but never heard back from him after that either. This routine happened one more time before I decided to chuck Chuck's Tree Service :) He did say that he was overwhelmed with work from all the fallen trees this Santa Ana season (lot of them urgent unlike mine) and there was another excuse about his mom not being well. Which is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. But it is unprofessional to make an appointment, not follow through or reschedule. YMMV. I ended up going with another excellent tree service I found on craigslist (David and Sons). I will post a separate review for their service. read more

I just had Chuck come out and remove 2 trees that were killed by another "arborist" well known in the area. Chuck had previously done work for me, but I became a "value shopper" instead of a smart shopper. For a miniscule savings, I lost a pair of beautiful 30 plus year old Alder trees, and spent more than the savings to remove them 1 1/2 years later. To replace these trees could cost well in excess of $5,000 each. Incidentally, there are other Alders in the neighborhood that the "brand x" guy trimmed after mine. All are dead. If you value your trees, THIS is the man to see. If you don't, get any clown with a chainsaw to trim them. Chuck isn't the cheapest, but he is clearly among the best and more important, he's honest. read more

Chuck came out to trim my birch trees, and it was nice to know on him. He used regular hand primers to lace out my birch tree. Everyone else told me I needed to top my tree, but Chuck let me know never to do that, and that it harms trees to do that. Chuck is very dedicated and reliable. I do not know what that happened with the previous reviewer...this is my experience: I called Chuck to help me take care of semi-emergency. He came over right away to look at the situation. He was here within the hour, even though he was had been out with his family. It was in the evening, and because he came right away, he did not have the equipment needed, and noted that due to some "hot" power lines on a utility pole, he would be putting himself in danger to help anyway. He helped me get a hold of Edison, who said they would come out. Later that evening, we spoke with Edison again, and they said they would come out the next day. I called Chuck to let him know that Edison would not be out until the next day, as he had asked me to keep him informed. The next day, as soon as he was able (well before Edison arrived), Chuck came over to check on the situation. He had brought his son with him, and the two of them, together with my husband, found a away to safely resolve the situation. I found Chuck both friendly and reliable, and was VERY thankful for the service he provided. read more

His crews sterilize their tools after every cut and DO NOT use spikes to climb. There is a Coast Live Oak in my backyard that is 200-300 years old. I have entrusted its care solely to Chuck Owen and his staff. Recently, 'Mrs. Squirrel' decided to strip the bark from a Pyracantha that grows in my back garden... Sure you could say that Chuck is an arborist but after finishing our property, I could see that he occupies the premier echelon of that category. His prices aren't for the faint of heart but he delivers in a thoroughness and skill that are unmatched. After he's finished, you'll be hard pressed to find a neighbor with more thoughtfully and correctly trimmed trees than yours! We have a blighted olive tree that will eventually succumb to the disease but he made sure that its life will be extended as long as is possible. Chuck only uses hand-tools and resorts to power-tools just when necessary. He disinfects his tools so as not to allow disease to jump from one job to the next. On our 40+ year-old Magnolia, he used a netting collar around the trunk to catch the falling hand-cut branches so that the plants beneath didn't suffer damage. Who else does that? One silly neighbor suggested a cheaper alternative of hiring a regular "branch harvester" and supervising his work but why spend north of $1k on one of these trimmers and then have to oversee his work? called yesterday (9-10-15) and asked chuck to look at a sick birch tree. he responded later that day, looked at the tree and gave advice to help remedy the sick tree. he also noted that a pine tree on the property was in danger of taking out a block wall and advised removal which will happen at a later date. i was very happy with his response and recommendations and would definitely recommend him to anyone having problems with their trees. read more
