After seeing great reviews thought I would give this place a go. With a name like Chuckwagon you'd expect the decor to reflect the name or even the menu, well you'd be wrong my friend. Service was fair, ordered the appetizer combo and it was fine and the 14oz ribeye sandwich. The steak wasn't that great, rather flavorless. My favorite breakfast spot. It isn't much to look at but I haven't ever had anything bad here. Nothing like a big ol stack of pancakes, endless cups of coffee, a side of bacon and hashbrowns all for about $7 that makes you go mmmmmmmm. Unfortunately, we had to make another trip here for a funeral so stopped again on a road trip. Service was sub-par. The waitress was apparently new and knew practically nothing. Rather than say she would go find out the answers to our questions, she merely said "I don't know" and would walk away. One of our menus had a tiny sticker on it showing an extra charge for fries with a burger, but the others didn't. So my dad was charged $1.85 for fries on top of a $7 burger that was nothing to write home about. I ordered a chuck wagon salad, which I asked to be described to me. I was told it was salad with chicken breast on it as well as other toppings.. It came out as a salad with chicken salad on it, as well as missing other toppings stated on the menu. Had to have it remade. My sister's meal came out wrong as well. Just not a good visit and after being here four times with it getting worse each time, I won't be back. read more

Agree with many on here: what a great find! The gravy was indeed the brown I like. Laurie our server (not sure how she spells it) was friendly and attentive. Sausage gravy had nice pieces of sausage in it. Fried chicken dinner was worth the 15min wait as advertised on the menu. The meat was moist and the breading not greasy. Greek skillet was fine. Sadly, my colleagues and I are just passing through. I hope I can come back the next time I'm nearby. read more

The parking lot was crowded on a Sunday morning; clearly the locals approve of the grub. We noted, looking over the crowd, that folks dining in Vandalia are mostly over the hill. Ah, just perfect, we're over it too. But no worries if geezers you're not. The eggs are farm fresh with yolks a glorious color not found in our Denver store, the coffee endless, there's real half and half, the toast...well the toast is ho-hum but the butter's not fake, and the service is prompt and friendly. For local color--though the color be grey!--and a good breakfast before your day's drive, turn off I-70 into Vandalia and give the Chuckwagon a try. read more

Truck drivers go somewhere else! I'm a truck driver and I am always looking for somewhere different to eat than a fuel stop. I thought I would give this place a try. Bad decision. I was not greeted at all even though I stood right in front of the staff for a little bit wondering if I was supposed to be seated or sit wherever. I sat down as a local man (customer) told me to sit anywhere. After a few minutes, a waitress asked me what I wanted to drink and finally brought me a menu. I ordered steak and eggs with hash browns. The potatoes where good. The steak was disgusting. Eggs, well, eggs. Nobody asked if I needed anything, which I could have used steak sauce, (I don't ever use steak sauce on steak) I kept looking up hoping they would come over but they would not. No refill offered, until I was done and that was the only time I was talked to at all since I ordered. Asked for the check and she was like "Oh." Paid then the question, "how was everything?" Leaving me thinking, what do you care? Thanks for a horrible experience. You should treat you customers better. Truck drivers go somewhere else!! read more

I had the spaghetti with meat balls and it was the best spaghetti I believe that I have ever eaten in my life. And the portion was more than I could eat. The staff was very nice as well. read more

We have stopped here several times on our way to and from St. Louis. It is really a great place to eat. The menu is quite extensive from breakfast to lunch to dinner. We have never been disappointed!! My favorite is the vegetable soup. Even better than I make!! The staff is so great - friendly, efficient, and accommodating even to us strangers! Erin is really super. It is also easy on and off of I 70. Only wish we had tried it 15 years ago!! read more

I am a native to Illinois so I have had plenty of pony shoes. This one I had last night was the best I had so far.

We had breakfast and lunch , just passing through, and they were both great! The coffee was,really good! We stayed in Vandalia 2 weeks ago whe driving across the country and ate here. We are doing the trip again and remembered how good it was so we stopped in again. Nice people and you can tell the locals eat here regularly. Plenty of parking with easy on and off I 70. read more

Greek owner and Greek cooks add some interesting dishes to the normal small American restaurant menu. We had homemade vegetable soup, Greek seasoned baked chicken, baked potato, green beans, homemade rolls with a $1.50 charge for an extra plate for under $10. Both of us were very full. Interesting desserts in a display case including baklava but we were stuffed. They are open 7 days a week 5am - 10pm. Definitely my new stopping place between St. Louis and Indianapolis. read more

Three PA boys traveling home from CO hunting trip stopped for gas and decided to eat dinner here. Always prefer good local grub over fast food. What a surprise! Eggplant parmigiana and Greek pork chops were outstanding. Cream of mushroom soup was off the hook. Large portions and reasonable prices. Fast and friendly service as well. Great place! read more

Currently, I am not satisfied with this café. In the last month we have came in twice for an evening meal and the waitress serving us has left in the middle of our meal. Now, the food was Great but twice I have been disappointed with the service. This last time I had to go retrieve my own baked potato from the grill as it was not served with my fish and then nobody gave me a bill so I had to go get someone to give that to me. I was told the waitress was sent home but did not inform anyone to serve our table so nobody was. Management then plays a role in this scenario as much as the waitress! I will try again but if this continues, I will go elsewhere. read more
