Shout out to reviewer Ken M. for influencing me to try Chuck's Place ......you were right! I had the large cheeseburger with everything and onion rings. My partner went with the wimpy burger ( not a wimpy burger.. 1.2 lbs) and cajun fries. From the moment you walk in, you know you've found a true local spot. It's small, cozy and decorated with fun signs and memorabilia. The staff are amazing, friendly, welcoming, and just the kind of people you want to see when you're about to dive into comfort food. Even at 1:30 pm, that in between lunch/dinner time, the place was steadily busy. And now I know why. The onion rings? Fantastic. I'm an onion ring snob and these were fresh, crispy, and legit. no frozen batter here, and none of that "pull the whole onion out in one bite" nonsense ( I hate that). The fries were hot, crisp and perfectly seasoned. And the burger is 100% beef, juicy, and packed with flavor. This is a local gem and I'm so glad we went. We'll definitely be back. read more

Best burger I've had I a VERY long time . I ordered a 3/4 lb burger, no bun, protein style.... And I will tell you... SUPER DELICIOUS... and a must try. Me, being from Las Vegas will say the is the best burger with the friendliest staff. The owner was super friendly and very personable. Came to our table and checked on us to make sure we were happy. WOW, WOW, WOW EAT HERE!!! Decided as we were traveling through to get off the highway a bit and try a burger out. 100% great choice on our part. The location had plenty of parking and it was hot outside so haven't great AC was nice to be met with. Staff is friendly in a real American way, not the just friendly at tip time. We asked questions about the menu items and the young woman had answers and suggestions. I got the big cheese burger and my wife got a smaller one. Onion Rings and Cajun fry's and sweet tea. Burgers, bun is fresh and not soggy, the perfect amount of condiments on it without making a mess. Cheese was gooey. Lettuce was fresh and crisp and not soggy or warm. The burger came out wrapped in foil and that kept it hot and seared in the flavor. Top notch. Onion rings came out so hot we had to wait to eat them, fry's the same way. Each one had flavor. Portions were about right. The sweet tea was great and not the kind we get in Michigan out of a fountain machine . Finished off with 2 shakes, 1 chocolate and 1 cherry. Both were thick and had actual flavor. Judging from the steady flow of people in and out, others know about this family run business. Do yourself a favor and drive off the road a bit and eat here. You walk by the kitchen on the way to the restroom and it is clean and you can see them making burgers out of real meat. Nothing is hidden so it's clean. This is one of the premier burger shops around. For goodness sake, don't let the drive from the freeway of a few minutes stop you from a great meal. read more

A kitsch-y local diner, very popular with locals - for good reason... the burgers are fantastic! Service is very attentive considering how busy they are. The Cajun fries were not terribly spicy bit piping hot in temperature. The fries are a curious blend of regular and crinkle-cut of medium thickness. They were very good! We only visit Salem twice a year, but we will very likely make this our "Salem lunch place" from now on. read more

Loud man was talking to another man. Turns out it was Chuck himself. A vibrant loud conversation that Chuck was having. The loudness added to the atmosphere. It was a weekday and close to lunch. Nobody else was inside. The service was great. Family members/kids seemed to be moving back and forth from the kitchen to the main area. The atmosphere was good. The food was delicious. Yummy food and quick service. My family and I stopped in on our way from IL to FL. We used the drive through and ordered their vanilla shakes, a cherry shake, fried pickles and cheese burgers. The fried pickles were good sized and had a bit of spiciness to them. They came with ranch or sour cream for dipping sauce. The kids burger is good sized and enough for an adult. I was passing through town to pick up a piece of farm equipment in Salem. It wasn't quite ready for pick up and we need to kill some time so we decided to grab some lunch. Spotted this place on yelp, and as usual yelp never disappoints! I love this little spot. Very clean, very eclectic, and the staff is very nice and friendly. My server was great and the food was outstanding! Ordered the wimpy burger, let me say there's nothing wimpy about it. It was a double burger dressed with fresh produce, the beef is fresh and seared on the flat top and screaming hot when it came out to the table. I must say it's been at least a year since I've had a burger that straightforward, fresh and delicious! You're doing outstanding work guys, keep it up. If I lived within 30 or45 minutes of you I would be 10 pounds heavier!! read more

Traveling to a wedding in southern IL and Salem was one of the bigger towns so we yelped restaurants and Chucks popped up. Pulled up to this little restaurant outside of town. There were lots of cars there some outdoor seating also. We entered and notice the very vintage feel to it, my daughter and I both said this is like a place that would be on diners and drive ins. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. We sat right away and we're waited on quickly. Decided to get their famous wimpy burger even though there were lots of yummy choices. My daughter in law and I ordered the wimpy jr burger and my son ordered the regular. We tried the onion rings and Cajun fries and regular fries. All delicious. The burgers were really good! Two burger patties with cheese and all the toppings. We all commented how glad we chose it as it's about two miles off of 57. Our waiter was so good and polite. Great find! read more
