Honestly, I think I had it completely wrong in my head--I always assumed it was more of a "pretentious" spot, and that couldn't have been further from the truth. Since we live right down the road, we finally decided to stop in and give it a try--and I'm so glad we did. It's spring right now, and the walk up was absolutely beautiful. The azaleas were in full bloom and completely lining the entrance, which made for such a welcoming first impression. Inside, it felt cozy and relaxed, with a lot of fun, interesting artwork throughout. It immediately felt more approachable than I expected. Our server was the sweetest--true Southern hospitality. I wish I could remember her name because she really added to the experience. We started with Japanese whiskey and ended up chatting with the table next to us, who told us they make a point to come here every time they're in town--which says a lot. When we ordered, I was honestly surprised by how reasonable the prices were for this area. We split the Ribeye Gaucho and the Monte Cristo, and both were delicious. Overall, it was such a pleasant surprise from start to finish. Definitely a place we'll be coming back to.

We were in the mood for some meatloaf and a skillet meal last night, so we drove on over to Cracker…read moreBarrel where we have had those meals before. The waiter told her the skillet meals were seasonal but they were coming back. So while she changed her mind, I ordered the meatloaf with 2 sides of dumplings. He asked me how I wanted my meatloaf cooked (1st time I have ever been asked that for meat loaf ever) I replied med/well She got the smoked ham with 2 sides. The waiter came back with our meals, he ham looked delicious. He put down on the table a thin overl cooked steak. And 2 sides of dumplings. I said I ordered meat loaf and he said they were out of meat loaf. Now why would he decide for me to give me a steak? Why when ordering tell me they were out? So he decided for me what I wanted? I told him take the steak back and I'll eat the 2 dumplings. Honestly I was a bit set back that he arbitrarily decided for me. When we went up to check out the cashier asked how are meals were? I replied you really don't wanna know. The Manager unbeknownst to me was walking behind me. He asked me what happened and I explained. I told him we ate the ham meal and the dumplings and I would pay for that. He turned to the cashier and said let me help. He handed me a receipt with zero charges at which I can't do that we ate the food less the steak. He replied he was disappointed at what happened and did not understand why he would arbitrarily give me a steak. I tanked the Manager and left. Thank you to the Manager for his com!

Service was friendly and fast, however they didn't ask me if I wanted anything else before bringing the check. (Otherwise, I would have had a piece of pie as well). It was a quiet atmosphere during lunch. Nevertheless, I would recommend Cracker Barrel.

We were headed to the Greenville Spartanburg airport afterwards, when we decided to stop somewhere and eat on the way. We had plenty of time, since we were going to be at the airport about 6 hours early due to a brunch being cancelled in Weaverville due to an accident involving another family member. The first sign we saw that interested us was for two places in Saluda, North Carolina. We decided to exit and take a chance. It was a good choice. After a short 1.5 mile drive in the beautiful countryside, we arrived in the tiny village of Saluda. It was really a quaint and scenic place. We drove past our restaurant choice, but saw no parking. We kept following signs to a parking lot, but suddenly the road we needed to turn on was closed for construction. I kept going to find a place to make a u-turn, when we suddenly saw Green River BBQ and pulled right into the parking lot. We opted to eat inside. At first we, being from San Antonio, were concerned that the dining room wasn't airconditioned. Believe me, it didn't need it! A very friendly server named Joey came to us right away, seated us, and took drink orders. When he brought our drinks we ordered our meals. My wife had a sliced brisket sandwich with fries and coleslaw. I ordered the BBQ Melt (Smoked pork on a king's Hawaiian bun with melted cheddar cheese & Duke's mayonnaise & smothered with caramelized onions.) Without knowing what it was, I substituted tomato pie for my fries. The food was all excellent. My sandwich was so big and loaded with pork that I couldn't eat the last fourth of it. I didn't want to be stuffed on a flying day. The pork was better than any pork I have been served in Texas. They really know how to cook it in the Carolinas. The coleslaw was rich and creamy. I really liked it. The tomato pie is a hard one to describe. The best I can do is to say that it is like the squash casserole we get in Texas, but replace the squash with fresh tomatoes. It was cheesy, gooey, and had a super great tomato taste. The service here was great. I watched as about 6 staffers were setting up for a big family group that came in after us. They worked like a finely orchestrated marching band. All I can say is this: Skip all those other chains that are along Interstate 26 and go to Green River BBQ!
