This is a review strictly for the music section. It's extremely disorganized. There are labels for genre, but music is everywhere. I found the same Ben Folds Five album on two different shelves AND on one that rolled. Maybe the library staff tries their best to do something, but even when I asked, the librarian didn't know how where I could find what I was looking for. Time to listen to U2...because I still haven't found what I'm looking for. Ba dum tss. (don't come here for music) Time to check out the country library and see if I fair better. read more

I had a great visit at the Chula Vista Public Library today. After a couple hours of reading my eyes became tired and I dozed off. A concerned security officer stopped by with a big smile and asked me if I was OK. This is a far better way than I've been treated in the El Cajon Public Library. I've told that story in a different review. Back to the review at hand. I figured I needed to stretch my legs so I went outside to Friendship park sat on the lawn under a tree and enjoyed a picnic lunch. i suppose I could write a separate review for the park... It's been a good while since I came back here. They finally remodeled the women's bathroom! Wow what a breath of fresh air! Except it was a little smelly (probably because of the people who go and use it and don't clean up after themselves) no more mold. They are exceptionally clean for the most part. read more

You can apply for and renew your passport here by appointment only. Slots open up online at 4:45 the day before so you snag them right away. You receive a text and email reminder as well. (Bring coins in case you forgot to make copies of certain documents. You can use copy machine there for 15cents a page). The visit was short, sweet, and helpful. The library itself looks very nice. It has a large waiting area for passport and of course lots of places for books and computers. It was clean and looked inviting. We saw plenty of parking too. Nice place to visit. read more

More than just a place to borrow books. There's also a small auditorium, passport assistance, community programs, events, and activities, a used book store, etc. But of course there's ALOT books and audiovisuals. My youngest child loves going to the children's section, which is separated from the rest of the library for the little one's added safety. There are plenty of tables and comfortable couches to sit at... it is a cool zone for the community when the weather gets hot. What I love most about the CV libraries.. is the fact that all 3 locations are connected. Anyone with a library card can search the online and request books to be sent to the location of your choice. You will be notified when your book is available and it'll be waiting for you in a designated bookshelf. They don't always have all the latest titles, but there are plenty new releases and I've always been able to find a few to read. The library staff have all been so nice and helpful. Many books and some areas of the library does seem worn and dated. I wish there were more funds for community facilities like this!... read more

I don't post Reviews, but yesterday I went in for my passport renewal and it was a very disappointing experience. One of the girls working there was very rude. Her name was Zoey. When I asked her to borrow a pen She grabbed it and threw it at me. She then told me that they couldn't help me if I didn't have a second copy to my passport and then told me that I needed a copy and to fill out the money order so I sit down fill the money order and I come back up to her and she grabs my papers and throws them back at me and tells me didn't I tell you we couldn't help you because you didn't have a second copy to the passport but she never told me where the copy machine was. She was VERY RUDE and there was another lady she was giving attitude to also. She then gets up and leaves the lady speaking to herself and goes and chitchats with her coworker to tell her . read more

The also have coputers you can practice your skills on, imporove your typing skills, and they clearly show where you need practice. Please and I mean PLEAAAAAASSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE get the housekeeper a vacuum that she can use AT CLOSING. Her walking around with a BROOM sweeping back and forth is the most irritating sound when I'm trying to study. I legit got up from my seat to walk a few rows down from my study area to figure out what the hell that noise was. It's been 50 mins into my study session and she's made her way down the library into the area I'm studying in. I want to ask her to stop but that's the libraries problem for not designating a time for sweeping and vacuuming. It's 2:59 pm and this place closes at 5. I love the productivity but not this way. I loved the library and I thought it was very large, clean and visually appealing overall. My review will focus more on the "Filipino of the South Bay" exhibit inside the library: Overall, I found the "Filipino of the South bay" exhibit both very beautiful and meaningful as a smaller area. The displays of medals, clothing, newspapers, timelines and other artifacts gave me a real sense of Filipino culture and history. There was a clear short description and visual with each exhibit translated into 3 languages, which I found inclusive and understandable. My mom, who came with me, was excited to see our culture represented and appreciated in such a respectful way. Although I wish the exhibit had gone deeper into timelines and details, especially about Larry Itliong, the Manongs, and how Itliong convinced Cesar Chavez to continue the grape strike. It could have also included more about the Philippine-American War and the efforts of students at San Francisco State University to establish ethnic studies. Adding more of these details would make the exhibit feel more impactful and less surface-level. However, I still learned a lot and gained a better understanding of Filipino American history in San Diego. The visit made me appreciate the resilience and pride of my Filipino community and how they have kept their culture alive while adapting. read more

There is a scene in Ghostbusters where Egon is looking over a building and says, "I think this building should be condemned. There's serious metal fatigue in all the load-bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it's completely inadequate for our power needs, and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone" While walking to the Library there are a few people outside who are hacking up and unfortunately look very sick. This location doubles for a homeless hangout and bathroom facilities. While walking inside, it looks like areas are under construction but its just falling apart. I've only been in about 5 or 6 libraries and have to say this is the worst looking one I have ever seen. Oh and I am used to Libraries being quiet, this one sounds like a game at Petco Park, wow. Who is in charge here? The best part is, I went in to get information on Passport processing and I was given the wrong form to fill out. This is the place were they are supposed to help you filling out, and process your passport and they don't even know what form to fill out. I asked him twice and he insisted it was this form. Well low and behold, I get to the processing agency downtown and they tell me "You have the wrong form filled out" Luckily I was early for my appointment and I filled out the correct form. It only cost me about 15 mins in wait time. Bottom line this place needs to be remodeled and the staff needs to be retrained and shown how a library is supposed to run. read more

Great library! So many books to choose from along with movies and cds. First time here as we are traveling (aka transients ) on our boat to Mexico. My daughter was able to find everything she needed to do her research paper. The place is clean and well organized, lots of computers and even a used bookstore! Staff was great ! Man oh man do I have fond memories of this place. I remember coming here with my parents when I first learned to read at the ripe age of 4. I don't know if my mom made this up, but I remember her telling me that I could only check out 20 books at a time and we'd come back every week for a new pile of books for me to read (MAJOR NERD ALERT!) They have a great summer reading program for kids with prizes for those that read a lot of books. I used to greet that giant teddy bear whenever I'd visit. In high school, I volunteered for the library as part of their Youth Council during the summer and part-time during the school year. (YES, I AM A NERD.) We'd plan events like dance classes, craft sessions, and a giant end-of-summer party for those that participated in the summer reading program. I was even supposed to walk in the Chula Vista holiday parade with them, but I couldn't because I was already participating in the parade with my high school band. (LOL, ULTIMATE NERD ALERT!) I don't live in Chula Vista anymore, but I really hope this library never closes. It's the largest in the area. There are really great photos of Chula Vista/Bonita from waaay back in the day adorning the walls. There's a tiny used book store I like to peruse, even though the hours are very limited. I've probably borrowed hundreds and hundreds of books from here, ranging from my childhood books to NYT best sellers, craftbooks, foreign language books, cookbooks, to books on local plant life in Chula Vista. I just recently applied for all my children passports . The whole procedure is a headache. Even tho I had all my documents they managed to make me go back the next day just to show my kid school ID . Even tho they had birth certificates and old passport. What a waste of time. There fees are really pricey as well. read more

Compared to the Orange ave library. This one is pretty nice too not as big as south cv but it is pretty spacious. Has tons of variety in dvds...Way more than Orange. They have plenty computers throughout the whole library. Wifi access although is a bit slow. The staff is very kind helpful though and the kids section is great my kids love it. This library is more convenient to my house i will be back often. read more

I thought this was a great library. It has plenty of space, probably one of the bigger public libraries I have been to in San Diego County, other than the old Downtown branch. This place is way cleaner though. I like the fact that I could find a large table to study with lots of space for a few more study buddies. I also got a great seat next to a large bay of windows looking out into the public park next door. It was quiet, but you could still talk quietly since the place is so spread out. I recommend it as a study spot over some of the lame coffee shops that force you to buy something to eat. They do have internet, but I was having problems logging on that day, not sure if it was my computer or their server. enjoy. read more

I've been here many times to check out children library books for my nephews. The library needs a major remodeling. You can see that the CV City Hall and CVPD look brand new or well taken care of. The library is just kind of run down. It may look big but it's actually small. Inside, you will see empty space not being used and empty shelves/bookcases. The water filter has a red light telling to replace the filter. It has been like for a month now. Sometimes the restrooms would be closed all day because people vandalize or make a mess in the restrooms. The children's section of the library is not even quiet. Sometimes, it's like at a playground noise level and the librarians don't seem to mind it. On the outside, lots of trash, lack of landscaping, graffiti, homeless people hanging around, people would be smoking in front of the entrance. Parking is confusing and the parking lines are getting faded. Certain parking spaces have benches or an empty plant pot. It's just a strange layout. The library shares its parking lot with a park nearby where homeless people are just living there... I don't think it's a park either. It's an area with lots of grass, dirty benches, and shady type of people hanging there. Most of the checking out is now on the computer. The staff can check out books for you but I feel like it takes them a while. The downside of checking out books on the computers, the more books you check out... it will print out a partial list. It's best if you have it emailed to you. read more

I also have many memories with my dad at this CV library branch. Every time I walk in to this library, it looks exactly the same as it did fifteen years ago. I love the interior of the main entrance lobby. I know all CV libraries have great services, but I usually just go into this library for homework and studying. I prefer to be doing homework on a seat, computer desk or personal desk somewhere in this library instead of doing my work at home. There are way too many distractions at home. Overall, I love this library to get away and do some homework. read more

Chula Vista library the very nice big huge library is I know in San Diego Countyand a you to eat in it it has like a little dining area in the corner They also offer over in a little spot were they do passports in the library . They very nice selection of movies and DVDs we you give them $5.00 and you get as many as 3 movies to be checking out for up to 1week . really nice they have a computer searching and a little historic museum in the back of the library very nice it's very peaceful and very quiet and there's always somebody here to help you when you need help if you have a question you help with is always a help desk there to. Most of all I prefer the Chula Vista library to go to I no longer go to Coronado Library The act like they're punished you to using computers and the library If you don't pay your fine ! The Civic Branch for the Chula Vista Public Library system is pretty cool. They've set up many browsing areas so patrons can see new releases for different topics. There is also a cafe area where you can use your lap top and chill out. The wireless network is, admittedly, rather weak. That being said, they have stacks and stacks of books, lots of DVD's and CD's, and a wide magazine selection, too. I only wish the DVD's were easier to browse through. Or, that the online card catalog system would allow patrons to reserve DVD's. Plenty of self-check out stations and a large parking lot also make this a convenient stop for your literary and media needs. read more

I'm writing this review on a scale based on other local branch public libraries I've been to. I was SO pleasantly surprised with this little library. **GREAT SELECTION: Seriously, it has a better selection of books than even large central libraries I've used up in Orange County and Phoenix. Most local branches cater to the popular fiction/romance/mystery crowd, with little to be desired in non-fiction. Chula Vista Civic Center branch is packed full of history, religion, spirituality, current events, and political science books! Even more, their books are not just any old book on the subject, but really in-depth and special books. It's a small library, but they pack those stacks tight! **CLEAN & COMFORTABLE: Ample, well-spaced comfy couch chairs throughout the library. **ELECTRICAL HEAVEN: Electrical ports can be found all over the place to plug in your devices. Many are even found on the ground next to the comfy couch chairs. Super plus! **FREE WI-FI: Works fast and consistent. What else is there to say? DOWNSIDES... If you were coming to the library to access computers, you might find some frustration. Half of their computers were out of order. However, every time I checked, there was at least 1 available. You might want to get there early, if it's really important to you. read more

For only $20 a year, you can check out movies from the library's large stock of DVD's-a great deal! Of course they have computers for use by the public but your welcome to bring your own laptop- free Wi-Fi is avalible. The atmosphere inside tends to be a lil more civilized than the "Nasty City" branch so its probally a better venue for studying. CV Library gets my stamp of approval.Recommended! read more

Passport office in kids section. M-F 10-3/ Thu 1-6 pm by appt or 5 walk-in per day. If its not busy/ no shows they will take you. $15 photo. Our passport arrived in 3.5 weeks later which I thinks was fast passport turnaround. I was worried that it was going to be a painful DMV-ish experience, but it wasn't. Both parents need to be present in order to get a minor's passport. There's a special 1 parent form (active military, etc) and you may need to call to make sure you have all your ducks in a row for those special circumstances. They also took the passport pictures right on the spot which saved me a trip to Costco. read more

This is the nicest library in the south bay, also the biggest one that has the best study areas for students. I've been coming to this spot since I was in high school, when I came back down for the holidays as an undergrad at UCSB, and now as a Master's student at SFSU. Whenever I need to get some work done I come down to this library and buckle down. It's got everything for the community, a huge youth section and a bunch of computer stations for folks to use. Although the hours of libraries have been scaled back due to budget cuts, the hours at this spot are really great and are pretty consistent, whereas other libraries have horrible random hours. read more

I love this library! It's pretty big and has a lot of books and videos. You can borrow unlimited videos for a small fee per year. The automated book check out is pretty convenient and you can renew your books online. The children's section also has a lot of books. Bring your laptop and connect to the free wi-fi internet. They also have computers with internet and a paid printer. read more

Make use of these great resources! For most of the week, I believe this library closes at 8pm, so that's nice. There are some good quiet spots inside so set me up with a good book and that's all I need from a library. There a large kids section, computers, and dvds as well. It's been through some positive changes since I was a kid, so it's not raggedy, but still has a little sign of wear. For me it offers a lot of nostalgia. read more

I love that they are open on Sundays! Their online reservation system is awesome --- saves me so much time! Their staff are always pleasant and the bathrooms are clean. I usually can get the current bestsellers without a challenge. Sometimes I have to wait if they've got a couple reservations before me but there's so much more to read there. It looks like they have either moved or removed their magazine selection? Maybe I just didn't see it. I do t rent any of the DVDs or auditory books so can't speak to the selection. I've hosted a death cafe at this branch and that was an interesting experience. Didn't realize the "clientele" of the library was so...interesting. Especially when you are providing free tea and cookies . There's another branch a couple miles away if you can't get to this one as well as one in the Otay Ranch mall by the food court. read more
