The cool arts district around here, and a Woody Guthrie + Bob Dylan Center side by side? Impressive. I was there on a beautiful day and was just blown away by all the memorabilia, the timelines, and not to sound all Taylor Swift on y'all, but the eras of Bob Dylan and his incredible run of success. I've been a huge Dylan fan since my early high school days, and he still cycles into my rotation at some point each year, typically in the spring for whatever reason. He's a lyricist of the highest regard, and he has some savant level understanding of music, particularly folk. What's cool is that there's so many connections to other genres and musicians here as well, so really you've got a lot to take in. Additionally, the staff here is very friendly and helpful. I think it's cool that Tulsa has this gem, now go see it!

On the way home from our 49th Hammond Batts Family Reunion, we stopped in Tulsa to visit family, and I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bring the kids to Greenwood to walk the streets of what was once known as Black Wall Street and to truly connect with our legacy. Let me tell you nothing compares to being here. The Greenwood Cultural Center is a powerful, sacred space that preserves the brilliance, resilience, and tragedy of one of the most prosperous Black communities in American history. At its height, Black Wall Street was home to over 10,000 Black residents and boasted more than 600 Black-owned businesses, including 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores, a hospital, a library, a bank, two movie theaters, and even a private airplane. Yes, you read that right a private plane in the 1920s! In just 18 brutal hours during the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, an estimated 1,200 homes were burned, and over 35 square blocks of the Greenwood District were reduced to ashes by a white mob. The destruction caused an estimated $1.5 to $2 million in property loss at the time which would be over $30 million today. The human and economic toll was immeasurable, yet the story was buried for decades. Ms. Rebecca, our guide, brought the experience to life. She was brilliant, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable the kind of person who makes history stick. We later found out her mother has worked at the center for over 30 years, and that love and dedication radiated from every corner of the space. Her storytelling made us laugh, cry, and reflect. This place is not just a museum. It's a promise to never forget and to keep building. I'm already making plans to return for Juneteenth, which I hear is unforgettable here. If you're anywhere near Tulsa, even for a layover, make your way to the Greenwood Cultural Center. Bring your kids, your elders, your friends. This is not just Black history this is American history. Once a year hospice volunteers have a fundraiser in which they sell tickets at $100 per person for…read morean all you can eat and drink dinner. The food is provided free by local restaurants, so the cost of the food isn't taken out of the $100 donation. The entire donation is tax deductible. The highlights of the buffet are oysters and beer, but there's a large variety of offerings from restaurants, including meatballs from Roosevelt's and bread pudding from Charleston. There's wine and pasta and fancy appetizers from a variety of local eateries. Many people donate things for a silent auction and a raffle, which increases the amount raised for hospice. It's a fun evening and a good cause. I hope you will consider being a part of it next year. Unless we die suddenly, we are likely to need the services of hospice eventually. This is a way of giving it forward and having a great time doing it.

The art was incredible, and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. One of my favorite parts was the Andy Warhol room was so fun and such a cool experience! The grounds were truly breathtaking. We went with our clinical group and had the best time walking around and taking so many pictures inside and outside. Every corner felt picture-perfect. The gift shop had so many cute and unique items, and we couldn't leave without stopping by the Wildflower Café. Their lemonade was amazing! Such a wonderful experience. I would definitely go back again if I'm ever in Tulsa.

The museum itself isn't large, but there is a wide array of information available here. There's a room dedicated to the Tulsa Race Massacre, another exhibit dedicated to Tulsa restaurants, a small gallery featuring some local art, and more. My favorite room featured lots of little knick-knacks, an informative digital reference option about the definition and history of lynching, as well as public health history. (Notably, this room also has a KKK member's cloak and hood; it has blood on its collar. Please tread carefully if this kind of exhibit is painful for you.) You could easily spend an hour or two here looking around and reading the vast array of history provided at this institution. The cost to attend for adults is $10 but, as aforementioned, it's free for students (even out-of-state students!). Take advantage of all the resources here at the historical society and spend a day here and at the nearby garden center. The Philbrook is also not far!

There's never been an issue, even from people who rented out the place. I've seen this place be arranged so many different ways with decor. They've completely remodeled the space and made it bright and lively. It's located by Guthrie Green downtown, next to Valkyrie. The walls are white and there's a skylight on the tall ceiling that allows natural light to pour in. It is lovely! Its name comes from the fact that they have over 20 plants which serve as natural decoration. They definitely create a fresh and lively vibe. The capacity is 100 people depending on the room setup. They have long tables they can setup family style. The wood slatted folding chairs used for the event weren't the most comfortable/body-inclusive but they're cute. They partner with 21 1/2 Boutique Hotel to provide spouse suites for weddings and full kitchen. Outside catering and alcohol is allowed with a license. Overall, it's a cool space.

The Outsiders is one of my favorite books and movies…read more I knew some of it was filmed on location in Tulsa, but I didn't think the house where Patrick Swayze famously performed a handstand out front was still there. It is - and so is the extra pole that was added to the fence after it buckled during the first take. The inside is quaint, semi recreated and jam packed with memorabilia from the film. I loved the bedroom that recreates the setting where Ponyboy read Johnny's letter, which inspired him to write his English essay. I also loved all the random movie posters, candid photos and movie costumes - especially the autograph wall. The volunteers - who are strategically stationed around the property are the best. They're happy to talk all things book, movie and Tulsa related. If you're nice - they'll tell you about Crutchfield Park, which is just down the street and where the Greaser / Soc rumble was filmed.

You can tell they genuinely enjoy what they do and they are eager to share stories and little-known facts about the history behind the movie and exhibits. Their passion really brings the place to life. While we were there we met some fans who had traveled from out of state just to visit. We also chatted with the photographer who was a neighborhood local at the time of the filming and happened to capture behind the scenes photographs on set. He now sells photographs onsite and had some fun stories to share. Parking is convenient with a small lot out back, but if that's full, there's usually plenty of street parking nearby. There is a great little gift shop to check out before you leave as well. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

This is such a cool event space on admiral and peoria, right next to Topeka Coffee Roasters…read more Outside it just looks like a dark grey building and it doesn't have a major marker with the name, but once you get close, the doors have flyers and information. This is where the really really free market is hosted. I think they try to have it each month. There's a great sound system and a wood pallet stage up front in the first room with plenty of space for a band to set up. It's a perfect venue for concerts, performances, and other events. There's another room with more space and two bathrooms available. The exposed brick walls have amazing graffiti, giving it a very urban vibe. No alcohol is allowed, which works for the events I usually plan.
