I took my cousin (who just arrived to Canada months earlier as a refugee claimant) to this branch to set up a secure place for him to store the money he had just begun to earn through a cleaning services job he was able to find through a family friend. He is from a foreign country and speaks little to no English so being born and raised here I decided to help out. The man at the main help desk guiding people to the right person to help was very friendly and helpful. He set us up to meet with a Chinese woman working in an office at the branch to set up my cousin's account. Shortly into meeting her, showing our documents and explaining our purpose, she became very reluctant to help and accusatory rather quickly; she asked why I was doing most of the speaking for my cousin and after I explained, she questioned me why he should receive a bank account here if he can't speak English and can't be communicated to. When I first heard this from her I was ready to give her a firestorm verbal assault chastising her narrow minded, racist, accusatory, and discriminatory nature. I chose to hold restraint and explained my uncle who barely speaks English had been using the very same branch for 10+ years and was never denied service. I decided to not point out to the fact to her that: elderly Chinese were walking in and out of the bank while we were there, that I heard at least 5 languages spoken there that weren't English or French, and that the manager of the branch was also Chinese. It became apparent this lady who was hired to assist patrons was adamant on refusing service to us so I threatened to take this to the highest level I could. She left briefly and returned saying she spoke with her manager and that another lady will help us. As I left I wish I could have cursed her off but decided to take the high road. The next lady who helped us was Nigerian Canadian and was a complete 180 degree turn from the witch. She was extremely helpful, respectful, and sympathetic to my cousin's situation. Overall I was satisfied with the service the latter provided to us but nevertheless am disappointed that people like the former are allowed to work in Canada. The country has a policy of openness and multiculturalism and hard-working people come to the country with the hope of a better life; infighting amongst such ethnic groups will never solve anything. read more
