Another interesting and unique place we have in Cincinnati that many don't know much about is the…read moreCincinnati Tennis Club. It has a great history and tradition, dating all the way back to 1880 (1899 at present location), and it was even added to the National Register of Historic Places a quarter century ago. While it has been years since President William Howard Taft played at the Cincinnati Tennis Club (I bet he didn't chase down too many shots), the club is still a high-end and prestigious club. The CTC has 10 outdoor clay courts and is open April through October. The club offers lessons, leagues, a tune-up tournament for the Cincinnati Met, and other tennis activities (and a pro shop) for all ages, and it once hosted the pro tournament now known as the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, but the Cincinnati Tennis Club is mostly associated these days with hosting the USTA National Father-Son Clay Court Championships. It's a really big event that takes place each year, bringing some of the best father and son talent from around the country all the way to Cincinnati since 1974. While the CTC has a nice reputation in town, it seems that being a member at the club is a status symbol more than anything else. The membership dues aren't cheap, and if you really want to work on your tennis game and get to play year-round, while also having access to things like a fitness center, swimming pool, and more, you would be better off at a place like Harper's Point, Queen City, or Five Seasons. Sure, the club is really nice and boasts a great history, but it's more for the country club crowd than it is for families and the everyday competitive and recreational players.

I've also attended numerous social events at Ivy Hills - again, good food and great staff. I've had brides who had their ceremonies at Ivy Hills and others that have had church weddings elsewhere. Many brides get ready in the little white house that is near the club house. The house has a nice staircase for some bridal portraits. The windows are large - lots of light. Another plus for some photos. There are many photo opportunities elsewhere - on the course and around the house and clubhouse. The hole right by the clubhouse has the best sunset, too. There's a little pond there. The interior of Ivy Hills is very nice - and they can accommodate many group sizes. For one wedding, we did a Chinese tea ceremony, and that was held in a smaller, front room. They really can handle larger or more intimate receptions. The food at Ivy Hills has always been very good - and the service is always great! They've treated me equally well as a guest or as a vendor. I would definitely recommend checking out Ivy Hills for your wedding ceremony and/or reception - they do a fabulous job!

We had the great pleasure of holding our 50th (ouch!) high school reunion at Highland Country Club…read more A small group of us had met with Dan Schlarman, the general manager, a few months ago to make arrangements. Dan was wonderful to work with. He was very accommodating in meeting our requests, and very helpful in making suggestions about our food choices and the general setup. The facility itself is great. The room looks out on the beautiful golf course, and there is an outdoor terrace and stone fireplace. The room itself is very nice, and was more than roomy enough for our group. There's even a dance floor and grand piano. (Which we oldsters were able to take advantage of, thanks to a classmate's Apple Music which he Bluetoothed through HCC's sound system). Our meal was very good, and there was plenty for all. Dan was gracious enough to let us bring in our own cake. They have a full bar, and John, our bartender, was excellent. Prices were quite reasonable at the bar, and indeed, for our whole event. To a person, the staff was wonderful and made us feel very welcomed and cared for. They didn't even seem to mind when a few of us lingered to listen to a few last songs. If you are looking for a facility to hold your special event, I cannot recommend Highland Country Club strongly enough. A first class facility and first class people. Very well done, and THANKS again!

Oof. I was in town with around 30 coworkers and one of them has a membership at this country club…read moreso we had a big dinner there one night. The building looked old and tired but there were a lot of cool things in the glass cases and whatnot. We get into the big open dining room and have our section all the way at the back towards the windows. The finger foods were really good - especially the brussels and the shrimp! We mingled for a bit and then sat down for dinner. The server that was handling my table said she was new, which I can forgive some of the stuff, but she literally messed up every single thing from start to finish. We ordered drinks, one coworker at my table asked if they had draft beers and the server said no, so she got a Stella in a bottle. Later on, we saw a draft beer going out to one of our other tables, and it was a Stella. They messed up a bunch of drinks at my table, getting people the wrong things. We had preordered our dinners (or so I thought) but they still asked us for our orders. Not a big deal. I got a ceasar salad and it came out with no dressing so I had to ask for some. Other first courses didn't come out and we had to track them down. Main course was ok, I got the steak. Nothing to write home about, legit just boring steak from a country club. Dessert time! They brought out the wrong stuff for people so we had to correct them. One person just didn't get his dessert at all and the servers had all disappeared so we had to track them down to get him his dessert. With so many mess-ups we seriously thought this has to be a joke. All the staff was very nice, just a frustrating experience. General consensus from all my other coworkers was "meh." I don't know, I guess I would expect more from a country club?

If I'm going to stay competitive in my business, I better start getting competitive on the course. Where to begin? Coldstream Country Club is the cat's meow of golf courses in the Cincinnati area. Located just far enough outside the noise of the city but not too far that it takes too much time away from the day to take a lesson. The drive from the city's center is just about 20 minutes and it never seems that long. For me, holding the golf club for the first time was as awkward as a blind date, but Matt, my golf instructor, eased me in to the stance and my game! That's right, I said game! I'm not going pro anytime soon or, ever really, but I absolutely feel that after the 4 lessons I have had that I have improved exponentially.Give me 4 more and I just might be able to go out with clients. He helps me help myself! He is an amazing golf instuctor with loads of experience and time on the course. Matt is extremely attentive and observant. His critique is professional and sensitive to my competitive, have to be awesome at everything nature. He allows me the opportunity to call myself out on my own mistakes and gives me a chance to correct them. I did learn the dress code the hard way. So, follow it carefully and be conservative! To be on the safe side, wear khaki pants and a shirt with sleeves and a collar. Nothing revolutionary for a country club, but these rules are nothing to push the envelope on.
