When I met with Dr. Sam we went over what I was going through from the day I noticed the pain, and he checked a few things to make sure I wasn't going through anymore more severe from what I was describing. After that we started the treatment process, I got an adjustment on my back and hip and that helped relieve a good amount of pressure I was experiencing. Due to how bad my hip pain was he had me come back the next day for a follow up adjustment. To wrap up my long story the 2 days prior to my visit I was barely able to walk for more than a few minutes without experiencing pain in my hip that was preventing me from moving or even turning side to side while laying down. After my 3rd visit my back and hips are feeling back to normal. I was also trying to work around "piriformis pain" that I've had for years. Dr. Cave's procedure is to really examine your muscles with hands that know how your muscles should feel. He doesn't just order tests, or compose a theory about you based on things you say. He feels the muscles. And when he felt the muscles across my back, he was able to tell where they were tensed and working out of balance. Before I saw him, I was walking stiffly; if I took a 15-minute walk, I felt that I was "overdoing it." At the first visit, Dr. Cave relieved a lot of that pain and stiffness. I have now had 6 sessions with him, and I am getting more and more active. Telling myself hey, don't overdue it, your muscles are still getting back to normal. But what a lot of relief from pain. So that's the excellent part. But here's what was surprising. My "piriformis" pain has been there for a long time. In the past 3 years, four different doctors took x-rays and MRIs. They told me their theories. Two of them urged me to get epidural pain-killer shots. And the back specialist scoffed at a physical therapist's suggestion that I get "more imaging" rather than just x-rays; that PT was sure something was pressing on muscles or nerves and that it would show up with "more imaging." That was 3 years ago. Since I still have pain there--it feels like a sharp pinch again and again -- I asked Dr. Cave what he noticed. He felt that area, and said he could feel something other than muscles where he should only feel muscles. Something like a big cyst or a Lipoma. And he urged me to get "more imaging"--an ultrasound. Because, as he explained, it's like I'm sitting with something inside my back pocket, something that can push against nerves and so forth. The doctor who I saw the next day - in order to get a referral for an ultrasound - took a look. She immediately found a large Lipoma right under the skin, about 8 centimeters long, like a balloon under the skin. And the ultrasound confirmed yes, it's a large Lipoma. The next step is to have it surgically removed. I don't know how large an object I may have had under the skin, when I saw the scoffing back surgeon in 2023; and I don't know if anything else has caused pain in that area. But what's certain is that Dr. Cave found, almost immediately, something that must have caused at least some of the pain in my back, and at least one reason I've had back pain and needed to compensate with pain killers or by changing my sleeping position all night. *** This is an excellent doctor. He's a very genuine and kindly man. He talks straight and he will help you if he can. Not just another medical "nodding head" who gets paid but doesn't really help. He takes the time to notice things with your body, and he is generous with his time. If you want a classic, hands-on type of doctor, this is a good one. He knows how your muscles should feel, so he can tell when something doesn't isn't right, isn't feeling balanced. And he explains what his hands are discovering, while he examines your back! This contradicted the information provided on my insurance website and was surprising given that I had asked about coverage in advance. Discussing this in a hallway rather than privately added to the discomfort. Due to the confusion and lack of clear communication, I ultimately decided to leave without seeing the chiropractor.
