When you walk into CenterStage, you might at first feel like you've taken a trip back in time -- to…read morehigh school. The theater looks very similar to my high school's auditorium, with large polyester curtains covering the windows and the audience sitting on risers. But don't let that stop you! The talent I've seen come out of this theater -- which has created a name for itself over its past 100 SEASONS (wow!) for performing Broadway musicals -- rivals performances I've seen in New York and Chicago. The casts are truly phenomenal and fully committed to their characters. "Community theater" does not adequately fit this awesome establishment. They're so good that you'll easily forget you're in an auditorium and become sucked into the production. And they really make the most of the stage with inventive sets. I saw my first CenterStage production earlier this year with "Spring Awakening," a very raw and edgy play that explored such topics as rape, puberty, incest, abortion and teen suicide. And as the artistic director said before the play started, CenterStage does not shy away from avant-garde or controversial productions. They don't change a play to make it more PC but use that as fodder to explore more profound and adult subjects. I like that! And full disclosure: I was comped a ticket to see "Spring Awakening," so I wanted to make a return visit -- with me paying my own way -- before writing a review. Happily, I was able to do that this last week, when I saw "Sweeney Todd." This is another one that has a bit of an edge, though I admit their production was not gruesome just for gruesome's sake. They handled -- ya know -- Sweeney Todd cutting men's throats with his straight razor thoughtfully. There wasn't spurting blood, but rather, the shock value came from the actors' performances -- perhaps as it should be. I also like that CenterStage partners with non-profits on most of its productions. At "Spring Awakening," the theater raised funds for the Center for Women and Families. During "Sweeney Todd," the theater was raising funds for itself -- and more specifically, replacements for those ghastly curtains! Bravo! But they could put up paisley bed sheets over the windows if they wanted to -- I would still gladly come to their shows.

The meal service includes salad, bread, main dish and dessert (Chocolate cheesecake for me mmmmm). The ony thing I paid for was alcohol and they validate parking if you park right next door! The performance was entertaining, character engagement was so much fun and they stumped me on who did it. This is a great family, date, or just friends night out! This was the 175th year of the St Joe Picnic in 2024 and it was held the 2nd weekend of August on…read moreboth Friday 4 PM to 11 PM and Saturday 11 AM to midnight. We attended on Saturday from 5 to 8 PM. Parking was also available in the area at the seminary with a bus shuttle to and from the drop off at the front gates of the event. Wish there had been more shuttles available during peak hours because the wait was extremely long. We arrived at the drop off point at the front gates and then waited until an extremely long train (total of 6 engines) passed before we could enter. Trains pass by periodically, which is to be expected. We had pre-purchased $100 worth of tickets online for the 20% discount, and it was a bit of a challenge to find the Will Call booth for pickup. We were also surprised to be told that the tickets were only to be used for food, which is contrary to some of the wording on the website. We ultimately did patronize several game and activity booths which did in fact accept the tickets, so all was not in vain. We were aware that the special $1.75 chicken dinners offered this year in honor of the 175th would go fast. News reports indicated 4,000 dinners would be offered for an expected crowd of 50,000 patrons over the 2-day event. By the time we made it to the chicken dinner ticket booth, they sold out by 5:30. A bit disappointed, but we had been prepared it might happen. I felt bad for those who were not well aware beforehand. We ended up getting $7 beers and $3 hot dogs, playing a few games, purchasing a few raffle tickets, and then selling some of our tickets to other patrons and giving some away as we headed out early to go down the street to eat dinner at a sit down neighborhood restaurant. Our party of 6 all agreed the event felt a bit disorganized, difficult to navigate booths and the property, signage was sparse, and golf carts were annoyingly prevalent throughout the pedestrian pathways. Since this is a charity event, I was happy to participate and lend support. The volunteers are all to be commended. The property itself is also lovely beneath the mature trees and the weather was pleasant.

I recommend bringing bug spray, some water, something comfortable to sit on like a blanket, and a fan to stay comfortable in the heat and throughout the summer. I love going on Rep Weeks towards the end of the summer if there's a particular show I want to see. You don't have to be a Shakespeare expert to enjoy the shows because they give a great explanation in the program. The company is so committed to providing a great show for everyone, one time their power went out and they kept going as long as they could. If there are weather concerns they post updates on their social media and keep the audience informed during the event.

The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival is an awesome, FREE event that happens in Central Park every…read moresummer. They have a new season each year that'll include about 4 different Shakespeare classics. As big theatre nerds, this is such a blast for us. It's so much fun to bring some chairs/blankets, and just camp out while enjoying the show. These performances are also very well put together, and have professional actors that take the stage. If you're looking for food/drinks, they've got you covered also. There are usually a couple food trucks that'll be serving stuff to munch on during the show. This is always on my "To-Do List" every summer!

Being at that specific production in the Pamela Brown made it that more enjoyable. Actors was great about sending reminders for our tickets, which we booked online. They also sent an overview of what to know when visiting the theatre. They have an attached parking garage that is $15. It can take you to various floors of the theatre; however, last night all guests had to enter through the main lobby to pass security. The main lobby is still gorgeous with its high ceiling. The bar offered wine, beer and cocktails plus a few snacks. Helpers stood at the entrance to help guide us to our seating area. Our show was in the Pamela Brown, which has floor and balcony seats. It is small and intimate (yes, a bit tight as well for adults with broad shoulders and thicker thighs than when we were 20 yrs!). No bad seat - and I appreciated the placement of each row being staggered and slightly lifted for better visibility. Actors also offers two other theaters - one is very, very small and you're on the floor with the actors. The other is round and amazing! I want to go to a show just to experience both venues again. I'm so happy to be back and I'm inspired to watch their programming in the future.
