True fact: I bought a bag of pork crackers (puffed pork skin) from these guys - one of many items I've bought over the years with no problems. But this time, the crackers were stale (not properly crunchy and had a mild stale oily taste).
About an hour after I bought them, I took them back, as I worked nearby. The cashier was nice enough though she clearly didn't know what to do (which is fair enough, if they don't get exchanges often). I soon found out why they don't encounter exchanges/refunds much. She called the lady in charge, Connie, from the store room, who was clearly angry that someone even dared bring something back, rather than suffer a loss. Well, for an item with a CBD premium added, I wasn't going to just chuck it in the bin. So here's how the exchange went:
Connie: (cracks a sample of the crackling which made her fingers go white "see? crunchy."
Albert: "errr but you did it with a fair bit of effort. Can I just exchange it for something else?"
Connie: "you must change it for something else."
Albert: "yeah pretty sure I don't want another pack of this." (chuckle)
It took me all of 30 seconds to pick something else, as I just bought something that I've purchased before with no problems - Korean seaweed. By that time she had already darted back into her storeroom castle. I just assumed that the cashier now knows what to do, but she had to call Connie out again. Which then begs the question: was she hoping that I'll just go away by inconveniencing me? Not a big issue, I just let it slide and patiently waited.
Connie: "this way please".
Connie: (2 seconds later) "I SAID THIS WAY PLEASE"
Albert: (patiently) "I heard you the first time"
Connie: (tosses her clipboard on a counter) "We never had any complaints about this product before"
Albert: "That's got nothing to do with what's here and now. And perhaps this can be the first time then!" (another storeroom assistant, who came outside with her, giggled softly. Perhaps he had longed for the day that rude Connie got shut down)
Connie: (after scanning the two items) "You have to pay me $2.20"
Albert: "Yes I already know that. I already have the money in my hands?". (could've got snide about it and asked if she was blind or what, but I felt that the more polite I was, the more of a loser she looked).
She literally looked like she was either going to cry in frustration or whack me with her clipboard. Sorry Connie, if you can't deal with someone bringing back foul stock, which was just once in many transactions, you should either let someone else run the store or shut it down. read more
