It was a hot day so a bit warm on the deck. Got a Groupon deal for Rock the Yacht Cruise which is a 1.5 hour tour of Sacramento views in the evening. Weather was perfect for a date night. It did get bit too chilly so I will recommend to bring a sweater if you plan on sitting outside. There are indoor and outdoor seatings. Inside the yacht, music was playing and you can dance the night away. There wasn't much food options. There is a bar and they do offer alcohols. Overall, it was a cool experience. read more

Went on cruise July 17th..see receipt. This is a one hour tour aboard the Hornblower. The easiest way is to take the elevator out front of Delta King and then walk straight to the boat ( no steps or stairs!). It's a no frills excursion but I love history so i found it interesting. There is a enclosed main deck with air conditioning or you can go upstairs for a more open atmosphere. They serve cocktails ( i got the bikini martini and my boyfriend got a margarita). Just know they will be a bit pricey. We also got some chips and salsa but the chips were stale and broken so we left them. I would suggest bringing your own snacks since it's only an hour. We did enjoy sipping on the cocktails! It's a relaxing tour which gives you a better insight from the boat. You can walk around freely to view both sides of the boat. This tour appeared to be good for much older people as well as children. They have bathrooms on the boat for both men and women. Its only 32 bucks per person so it's a good value! read more

My family and I were very excited to attend the 1-hour Sacramento Historical River Tour and learn more about Old Sacramento. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing due to poor communication, lack of signage, and unprofessional customer service. We followed the instructions exactly as stated in the confirmation email and arrived at 1206 L Street, next to Joe's Crab Shack, as instructed. The email stated we were to be at the dock by 10:45 AM for the 11:00 AM tour, and we arrived at 10:40 AM along with several other guests. No staff members were present at the dock, and there was no one available to check anyone in. We waited until around 11:10 AM, during which time multiple customers double-checked their emails and confirmed we were all at the correct location. One guest even called the company to inform them that several customers were waiting with no staff present. At approximately 11:10 AM, the woman working the ticket stand arrived for her shift. At that point, we were told that a different location had supposedly been included in the purchase email. However, all of us had the same instructions, and the address we were given also matches what appears on Google Maps and Apple Maps. There were no signs, no arrows, and no posted instructions anywhere explaining how to access the dock or where the boat was actually boarding. When my partner and I spoke with the woman at the ticket counter, the situation became even more frustrating. She was argumentative and immediately blamed customers, insisting we had not read the email correctly. She refused to review the email we showed her and would not take accountability for the incorrect or unclear instructions. Instead of acknowledging the confusion or offering assistance, she spoke to customers in a rude and dismissive manner. We were explicitly given two options: 1. Move our experience to a later time 2. Receive a refund Because we had other commitments and did not have the time or patience to go back and forth arguing over money, we requested the refund. However, it became unclear whether the employee had the authority or knowledge to issue refunds. The interaction turned into repeated back and forth, and rather than continuing to argue, we disengaged. We were then told we would be partially compensated for only one ticket, despite having purchased three tickets. No explanation was provided as to why only one ticket would be refunded, and the employee stated that there was no way to leave a note or documentation regarding this promise. Because nothing was documented, we have little confidence that this compensation will actually occur. What made this experience even worse is that the boat left without any staff coming to locate the guests who were waiting at the dock. Some customers eventually figured out where the boat was docked, but by then it had already departed, leaving no opportunity to participate. Overall, we wasted our time traveling to the location, waiting well past the scheduled departure, and attempting to resolve an issue that was not caused by the customers. Mistakes happen. That is understandable. What is not acceptable is: * Incorrect or unclear instructions * No signage directing guests * Staff arriving late for check-in * Offering a refund without the ability or willingness to issue one * Promising compensation without documentation * Poor, dismissive customer service This was a terrible first impression for us and several other first-time guests. While we will attempt the tour again to see if the experience itself redeems the company, I am not optimistic based on how this situation was handled. The company needs to update their emails, provide clear signage, ensure staff arrive on time, and properly train ticket counter employees on customer service, accountability, and refund procedures, especially when errors originate within the company. read more

I knew it was a hot day, but I didn't know there would be no AC, except for one window box blowing an area of about 3X3 and it had 5 people sitting directly in front of it. There was no mention of not having AC on this boat when I talked with a human and made reservations.. It was my friend's birthday and we arrived at 2:40 for a loading time of 2:45. We went in and it had to have been at least 90 degrees inside. The boat left the dock, but we never realized the narrator had started because it can't be heard on the first deck. Hoping to find a cooler area, we went upstairs and realized that there was a group that had boarded early and there were no seats available. That's when we found the tour narrator had started to this big group. Again, no seats available. I felt ill from the heat and needed water. It was not offered until after we had started back to dock and besides that there was no one tending bar. I contemplated how much would be involved if I needed to call 911 as I could recognize heat stroke symptoms. (Also, I have been on a large amount of river cruises and have never before seen passengers literally lying down on a tour and this was happening on the first deck.) I would not recommend this boat ride. It was unprofessional, mismanaged, and did not fulfill what was promised in any way. I left wobbly and with soaked hair and clothes from the heat. 2024 company holiday dinner party 12/5 aboard the Hornblower City Cruise boat with Captain Roger, food by Crisp Catering, a 21+ event. This experience was around 1.5 hours with live DJ entertainment, 2 drink tickets per person provided for a full bar (cocktails, wine, beer), and first come first serve limited onboard cocktail seating. Casual attire dress code, advised to dress weather-appropriate, private event, maybe 75 -80 people total. I recommend the Tower Bridge Garage (1289 Front St). From the L Street Dock, boarding time was between 5:30-6:00pm, and the cruise was from 6:00pm-7:30pm (weather permitting). If the waters are rough, the boat would stay docked for the evening. There were scenic Sacramento river views, but since it was nighttime, it was pretty dark once you got past the Westin/Scott's Seafood. Once leaving and approaching Old Sac, you had very nice shots of the Tower Bridge, ziggurat, and city. It was a clear night with the moon and Venus leading the way. It was cold outside, but both levels of the boat inside were warm and comfortable, decorated for the holidays. The first deck was where tables and chairs were set up (sit-down), restrooms were located, and the catering was set up. I don't have many pictures of the actual entire interior or the exterior for that matter. My bad. Lol To start, I had a group of over 30 for the sights and sips tour. Let's get into this. Parking: in Old sac is horrendous on nice days. It would've been nice to know there was valet parking a few spots away from the launch. Even with getting there before 2, it took 40 mins to find a park and walk over. Venue: The boat itself was decent, nothing to write home about. Had it not been for my 30, it looked to be a pretty dead cruise. Now onboarding, we were waiting for someone to tell us to come on down as we stood outside of the ticket booth. I just happened to note the time and asked the ticketer when will boarding begin. To my surprise boarding had already began. Fine, cool. I rush down the ramp to give the person our barcode. Upon entering, there is a upstairs and a downstairs on the boat. The bar & DJ are only upstairs. It would've been nice if there were "reserved" tables. Again, my group size was rather large and really could've taken up the vast majority of seats upstairs. Being that there were maybe 10-15 other people so we were staggered between inside and outside on the top deck. They had fun things for the kids to do downstairs. That was great. Service: The DJ was exceptional. I wouldn't say he spun top 40, it was definitely a lot of older songs but he was jamming. We did make a couple of requests and he gladly played them. Shoutout to him for keeping the party jumping. The bartender said she was hungover and her service sucked. We decided to not order anymore food because she did not wash hands or anything between patrons. Now maybe she was overwhelmed with the amount of people on board and maybe she needed a 2nd bartender. However, group sales knew how many people would be on board and it should've been handled appropriately. Sales: If you want to boost more sales in your Sacramento location, you have to provide better service. I dealt with Jasmin and she was nice enough. As a travel agent there are endless possibilities for renting out the entire boat and hosting something, however, there just aren't any concessions besides the reduced cost per ticket for the sights and sips tour. It should be revamped for sure. All in all, I would do this again. Maybe I'll look into the San Francisco tour. read more

Picture this: On August 25, 2025, I purchased eight tickets ($262) through Groupon for a Sip and Sail cruise scheduled for October 18, 2025 at 3 pm, to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. I like to plan ahead for this type of very special event. It was Halloween-themed, so our four grandchildren, who are all under six, dressed up. They were very excited to go on their first boat ride. We arrived at the dock, tickets in hand, and, as we stood in line to board, we were told, "Sorry, your cruise was canceled because the boat is now being used for a private party." It was ugly-- anger (me), tears (kids), shock (everyone). While City Cruise's staff was apologetic, the company took no responsibility and blamed it entirely on Groupon. However, my guess is that City Cruise didn't have a full boat, or got a better offer, from a private group. In other words, you can't trust that any scheduled ride will actually happen. In addition, neither City Cruise or Groupon notified me. Clearly there is a problem. It was a mess. I will never, never, never do business again with either company. read more

I bought a Groupon and took my mom on this wonderful tour. We went at 2 pm on Halloween and it was perfect. The weather was wonderful...just a nice day. They boarded us 30 minutes before we left. We were the first in line so we raced to the top balcony for the best view. They have seating up there as well as seating inside the boat. They had music playing and a small bar area where you could purchase drinks and snacks. The cruise went down past Chevy then turned around and went up the river the other way. Every August, I spend a couple days in Sacramento on business as part of an industrial association that I belong. On one of those trips, Gayle came up with me on a Sunday, just before my meetings began on Monday morning. We visited the Crocker Museum (highly recommended), walked Old Sacramento, and ultimately decided to board a Hornblower river cruse at their dock. On our trip, there was fun music, decent drinks, an energetic and highly diverse crowd, great views, and a not too hot day with a nice breeze. It couldn't get much better than that. We had family visit from out-of-state and decided to checkout Old Town Sacramento. While walking around we noticed signs near the river and bought tickets for the 1 hour Hornblower yacht cruise. After boarding the boat, we found comfortable seating and then ordered cold alcoholic beverages. During the cruise we saw beautiful scenery and learned some interesting Sacramento history from the cruise captain. Recently went to a Rock the yacht event for a birthday party and it was awesome! I've lived in sac my whole life born and raised and I'm surprised I've never even heard of this until last month. I've always seen the boats docked during the day while walking around old sac doing the tourist thing but never thought twice about the type of events they have. I thought it was a a simple tour on the river and that was it. Boy was I wrong. Lol they had it all decked out with lights a Christmas tree full bar and DJ! The captain greeted you at the entrance and they even had security. Theirs two decks. Upper level had the dance floor DJ, and full bar. The first floor had a sitting area and deck that you could walk out on and chill for fresh air. It was nice and toasty so even thought it was 0 degrees outside it was about 90 inside lol well, with the alcohol of course. So bring a jacket but bring your party clothes! Drinks are super cheap! I mean old school prices. The DJ played a mix of new school and old school with some salsa in the mix. All I'm saying is it try it out. It's worth it. read more

Last weekend we did the 21+ Rock the Yacht cruise from 8pm - 9:30. Had a wonderful time and can't beat the price. BUT we spent the first THIRTY FIVE minutes in the slow-moving drink line (there were only two lines and we picked the wrong one it seems), only to then spend the last 55 minutes cramped in a relatively small space. It wasn't a very big boat and it was sold out. However, the music was great, drinks were delicious (about $9 each - highly recommend the Sour Tower), and it was overall very fun. Not a ton of lights on parts of the water but still really cool and you can't beat the price! read more

July 20, 2022 Update any comment one thousand one hundred ninety six. I still saying Three Star as now it no longer taking cash. My first review, they did take cash. My first has twenty votes. Okay so playing Camp Counselor. We walked over. Since was a weekday, normally this is only open I think Saturdays and Sundays, so I think that day we were one of only two groups. That time there were two camps on this tour. They give a narration of the history of the American River and of the Sacramento River. In those early historic days this ship used to go from Sacra to San Francisco and back. Took about two months. We did looking in the river see sea lions. One other Camp Counselor says yes they are actual of sea lions. I joked they must have followed me from San Francisco. I seeing my first was Review Fifty Five. Now there are One Hundred Twenty Five reviews. Wow. For the latest reviewer before mine, he wrote of Second Amendment law. I am glad this ship, this cruise, this program, not allows weapons. This unlike these two Camp times, is not 1820s to maybe 1850s. Maybe those years weapons were acceptable. This now year 2022. There just way too much gun violence, there just way too many school shootings. To this person, would you want any the passengers to be victims of more gun shootings, whether they be regular weekend passengers or whether they be those of us Campers and Camp Counselors of the two different camps? I hope not. I would not wanting hear on the Sacra news equivalent Campers and Camp Counselors plus the crew on the ship were shot today. Some dead, some injured. I recently took an Alive after Five Cruise with my coworkers on Thursday after work. Luckily it was not too hot. We got in line to get on the boat. They checked bags and wanded everyone before getting on board for security. Downstairs there are tables to sit and the restrooms are downstairs. Go upstairs for drinks and snacks. It is open air upstairs. There is a DJ playing music from all genres and times. We ordered a couple of beers and headed out to the front of the boat on the bottom floor. Enjoyed relaxing in the afternoon sun and hanging out with my coworkers. They take you up the river around to the Virgin Sturgeon and turned around to head south. Went back under the bridge and down towards the Pocket area and back to Old Sacramento. Nice relaxing ride and loved being on the water. Will definitely do this again. read more

Over the weekend I cruised with Hornblower in Sacramento, California for the "Rock the Yacht Cruise". This is my third cruise with Hornblower...the first was in San Francisco and the second was here in Sacramento. I really enjoyed this cruise and met some friendly people. The staff and the DJ were friendly. This cruise boards at 7:30 pm and cruises from 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person. There is a bar aboard the yacht; spirits are sold (at reasonable prices). I suggest arriving an hour early to stand in line. I arrived about 7:00 pm and there was already a long line. Seats/Tables on the upper deck fill up pretty quickly (usually to the first people in line). Which will leave you with seating on the lower deck, which is not very appealing. To me, the upper deck gets the best breeze during the cruise. Also, the seating on the outside bow (front part of the yacht) is limited and fill up quickly. The DJ and bar are located on the upper deck. Security will check for weapons (including knives), before boarding. Such items will be confiscated prior to boarding and given back at disembarkation. Overall, this is a nice activity for an early Saturday evening in Sacramento. After this cruise, its still early enough to experience Old Sac and Sacramento night life. I definitely recommend Hornblower. read more

Although it was fun there were some things I found to be quit dangerous & also the bartenders weren't the best and are quit rude. They were 2 older ladies I ask for my shot with no ice the lady told me I have to put ice because we're on a boat which makes no since & then she went on to say how many times have I road on a boat which was rude because I've been on a boat more times then I can remember also the bartender over charged me so maybe they making up prices as they go because she charged $9 for a drink & then charged $11 for the same drink. The boat was wet inside because it was pouring rain outside & they had an electric heater plugged into the wall sitting on the floor surrounded by wet floor. Which was a yikes! I hope they take the time to update their little boat and also there bartenders. Other then that the DJ really rocked the yacht & the other staff members were so nice. Also I don't recommend eating the food although I didn't eat they made nachos which no one ate. Hornblower Cruises is a decent distraction for an hour while you are in Old Sacramento but the experience was a little disappointing. My family and I love going on river cruises in different cities because they are not only informational, but also give a unique view of the city. However, for Hornblower to be worthwhile, it is important where you are seated. Ideally, you should try to get a seat outside of the boat because the windows looking out inside the boat are not super transparent making them hard to see through. If you are on the top floor, you are able to push them open but even then, they are not super easy. While the top floor seems like the preferred section, this also where the bar is located. When my family and I went, there were at least two different groups that were actively going to the bar for drinks. They became more loud and rowdy as the tour progressed which made it harder to listen to the person giving information. Obviously, as a business, having a bar makes sense but perhaps making an alcohol free ride versus alcohol rides would be nice. The service overall was good. For parking, there is limited meter parking, but you could also park at a nearby lot especially if you are planning on spending more than a few hours in Old Sacramento. Hornblower Cruises is a fine cruise, but needs several improvements in order to be better. read more

Since my kids are Home Schooled we don't have to worry about when, where and what time to go places! This was a fun experience for all of us with some little history along the way about the Sacramento River, Bridges and Old Sac. Hornblower Cruises & Events are a great way to explore along Sacramento River and Surrounding area. The cruise is about 1 hour long and it heads north 2-4 miles, then it comes back past it's destination about 1 mile. This ship has two levels and we chose the upper level with no windows. On a hot day you can feel the breeze and it's nicer and cooler. They offer beverages like sodas and beer but since i don't drink alcoholic beverages we got sodas & lemonade with free refills for $2.50 per cup. Cost wise is not bad at $20 per adult and $10 for kids under 12. Seniors also receive a discount of about $2. This Cruise is nice to take someone out of town and relax from all the hustle and bustle from busy daily life. I do recommend trying and go check them out! Have fun out there. We rate this experience at 5 stars and also would like to mention the captain and server (Tyler) were awesome. They kept us entertained the whole time! read more

This was our first time on the hornblower cruises and events and I have to admit our first experience was fantastic. We went on our birthday weekend (12/15/18) as a celebratory of our 36th and 45th birthdays. We were on the 21 and older "Rock The Yacht" cruise at 8:30 P.M. At first I was a little unsure about this "local cruise" because 1) I bought the tickets on Groupon and I've had bad experiences through them, 2) really?! This is Sacramento; I've seen everything I needed to see in Sacramento --Or so I thought! And 3) I'm not much of a clubber; drinking, smoking and loud music is not my thing, but we went anyway just for the experience so we can say we've done it once and boy did we fall in love with the beautiful lights that lit up the entire water front, the cool breeze that kept us snuggled to each other and the crowd and music that kept us entertained. We'll definitely go again and will try the family/kid friendly cruises, so we can take the kids as well. read more
