But..... you have to experience it with a docent to get the full effect. If you poke around by yourself, it may seem unimpressive. There is a farmstead onsite, with a chicken coop. The staff searched the agricultural schedule in the 1920's census to determine what type of chicken was raised in this area during that time. Then they procured that breed! Historic, heirloom chickens! I would never have learned this just by moseying around by myself. So let the docents treat you to the incredible nuances at the museum. Before I left, I bought eggs, from the chickens with the impressive lineage. Also, follow their Facebook page for great community events. This is a happening place!

The most…read moreunique thing I think this place has over lots of other historic places is the fact you actually get to touch and mess around with the antique items, which is basically unheard of at most historical places. The fact it is so hands on makes it such an incredible educational experience. The prices are very cheap for a 45m tour and deep explanation of the various buildings and items in those buildings. I wish more places were set up like this were kids can actually see, reenact, and learn about historic life. All the staff was very friendly and we really enjoyed our tour guide! This place is an absolute must if you love history and you want an amazing educational experience for your kids!

It's older and the only disadvantage to this is the seating is not on levels like a more modern theater. As a person who is 5'2, I had to constantly try to move around in my seat to get a view between people's heads in the rows in front of me. I could never get really comfortable but that was my only complaint. If o were wealthier, I'd grab some of the box seats. That looks like fun! The show was fantastic and Carrington and her magnificent band performed music of resistance! She and her band did a twist on one of Max Roach's albums, We Insist! Starting out with the great Driva'Man. I enjoyed it so much! I know the theater is having an art auction to raise money soon of you love art especially local artists, this would be a great event to support. I'd love to go back to see more shows and plays.

Gorgeous Historic Venue, wonderful performances, great location downtown…read more I've seen jazz concerts, cabaret shows, local talent and touring shows. There is a parking garage to the west, street parking, or public transit. There is a concession stand in the lobby and they allow refreshments into the theater. I prefer the main floor, near the front. There is a balcony, the seats are narrow, and they have box seats as well. The bathrooms are small for the size of the venue, so there is usually a line.

First thing I'll note is that parking is a pain here. If they ever do renovations to the music hall (and they should), it would be wise to include an underground dedicated parking garage. We drove around for a while before settling on our old reliable (the Cosentino's garage) and walking over. Once you get in, it's old school KC art deco in every detail, which honestly is kind of nice and enjoyable to take in. On the pro side of things you've got charm, you've got plenty of seats in the house, and it's a nice place to take in a show. On the negative side the restrooms are small and outdated, the seats super sardined in by modern standards, and no really great set up for a bar or merch table. It all feels sort of ad-hoc since when this place was built it wasn't really built for those sort of modern conveniences. Overall it's a cool spot by historic standards, but by modern standards it's not my favorite venue in town.
