This can detract from the experience if eating outside. The quality of the food was not outstanding, the fish I had was a bit too well-done (dry) to my liking, but definitely worth the money. They change the menu daily and use as much as possible seasonal and local ingredients. This can mean the vegetables/potatoes sides can be a bit basic and nothing fancy but it's fresh and tasty. St Davids being the smallest city in the UK but very popular to visit makes it difficult to find a decent place to have dinner without booking so make sure you make reservations well ahead if you are planning to come here (especially in the weekends).

There's just a little more flavour at the Farmer's than you get down the road at the Bishops…read more Both are good pubs serving the good people of St David's and their annual pilgrims who come to worship cliffs, coastal paths and small waves which carry them back to shore on their body boards. But the Farmer's has a bit more edge to it. The sort of place that takes a bit more guts to enter. As you open the door, do things go just a little bit quiet? It feels like that as the locals check you out and then carry on with their stories. The ceilings are low and beamed and there are nooks and crannies all over the place making this pub feel like a little smugglers' den. If you can find a place in the teeny weeny mini bar round the side it's a really lovely snug to sit and slowly get drunk. As is the seat built into the wall in the main bar. Take pictures of the locals and they will frown and mutter. Get served before them and there might be an audible tut. But if you can get over that, this is the place to hunker down and let the sea air and the ale do their thing. Warm them up and you can't stop them talking. By eight the place is usually very lively indeed, all tables for food taken and all snuggly places bagged. But you'll be happy enough standing there in the main bar drinking in the ale and the atmosphere. Service is quick and friendly. The menu has all the classics, but unlike the Bishop's they do some snazzy specials usually consisting of locally caught fish. It's not cheap but it's very good. A kitchen clearly enjoying doing great things with whatever comes in on the boats. You are welcome to eat outside in the garden which is more functional than beautiful but has the bonus of an extra bar so you don't have to pick your way through the thronging evening masses and their damp dogs. I came again in 2002, then in 2005 for the last time - until last Saturday when I was in the area, walking parts of the Pembrokeshire coastal path again. The food is very good, not Harlech or Castell Howells Frozen Food which I do not want to eat when I go out. Here it is home-made. - I also enjoyed sipping the cider outside. I cant comment on the smoking area however the games room is just that, nice and functional without that feeling of being tacked on and although out of the way not so much that its segregated to not have some of the vibe come from a good night happening. I've not even mentioned the Indian restaurant out the back which is second to none. So now onto the bad points, the jukebox has that much of a vast selection you'll find that your songs have already played by the time you get to select them all. With the amount of bitters changed it would be nice to see perhaps the same on beers, perhaps a guest lager just now and again. I never ever send food back or complain, but on this occassion I had no choice. I asked the waitress very politely if my chips could be warmed up, without a word she snatched my plate and stormed off..awful. Eventually she flounced back, slapped plate onto table and walked away. I have been a waitress and I would never treat diners, or anyone for that matter, like that. It wasn't busy and there were plenty of staff. My friends dishes were also cold and bland. For the prices and provenance of the sloop you'd expect food, portions and service to match! It's not a one off experience, this type of service, small portion, cold food has happened more than I care to remember and unfortunately myself,my family and friends have decided not to spend a penny more there which is a shame as we live nearby and would love to spend time celebrating family occasions inside it's great interior. But boy do they do beer. There are usually two or three real ales a small selection of spirits (all the usual culprits) a lager or two (for those sad persons who feel the need) and of course Guinness. One or two cracking single Malts There is a pool table (in great condition) and a dart board. The gents toilets are CLEAN with real towels!!! My wife says the ladies is just as good. The beer is ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, in first class condition. The pub is peopled by locals and the occasional holiday maker who found it by complete accident. The locals (many of whom speak Welsh as a Mother Tongue) are always unfailingly welcoming and helpful. If you're a broken down holiday maker and the guys in the bar can't fix it - they'll know a man who can. They'll tell you all the GOOD places to go and all the bad places to avoid and - give them time - they'll get you to fall in love with it too. The landlord is a Londoner (!!) who happened on the place by accident and LITERALLY never left - He bought the place. No anti-english feeling here, and I should know - I'm a local (when I'm home). This pub is what a village pub always was and now never is - the centre of the little village in which it thrives. They organise the street parties, all the local darts, pool, Guy Fawkes Nights Summer Bar-B-Qs etc etc..
