City Island is a wonderful family fun place for a Senator's Game, a ride on the Susquehanna Riverboat, miniature golf, picnic tables, a pavilion to rent, a miniature train ride, and, of course, walking, running, or biking. Today, during my walk, I noticed that The Spot Restaurant, which specializes in hot dogs (and closed its Second Street location in Harrisburg in 2007), operates a Senator's concession stand. read more

It had been years since I last walked around City Island, but I have vivid memories of what it used to feel like -- beautiful, lively, full of people walking, biking, walking their dogs, and enjoying a well-maintained playground and open spaces. Returning recently felt less like revisiting an old favorite and more like realizing how much something you care about has changed... and not for the better. The disappointment started as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. Deep potholes, chunks of scraped-up blacktop piled near the stairs, and metal crowd-control barriers scattered throughout the lot gave an immediate sense that things weren't quite right. I fully understand that it's winter in Central PA -- snow, salt, and weather take their toll -- so I wasn't expecting perfection. But this felt like more than seasonal wear and tear. It felt like neglect. Aside from the stadium -- which stands tall, clean, and well-maintained even in the middle of winter -- much of the rest of the island looks forgotten. And this isn't just a "winter off-season" issue. The more I walked, the more signs of long-term neglect became clear: peeling paint, rusting structures, broken or deteriorating features that appear to have been left untouched for years. What started as mild disappointment turned into genuine sadness as I compared what I was seeing to photos I have from visits many years ago, when the island felt welcoming, cared for, and full of pride. As a Central PA native, it's difficult to see such a beautiful and potentially vibrant space in this condition -- especially one that represents our state's capital to visitors. City Island should be a showcase destination, and right now it feels like a missed opportunity. There seem to be so many possibilities for community involvement -- volunteer projects, partnerships with local organizations, youth programs -- to help restore and maintain the island. For whatever reason, it doesn't appear that those efforts are happening, and that's disappointing. The views of the river and the city skyline remain beautiful, as always -- as long as you keep your focus outward rather than on the island itself. I truly hope to see City Island revived and restored to the welcoming, vibrant place I remember. read more

From Double A Baseball to a beach on the Susquehanna a Miniature Train and Water Golf there is an arcade and during the nicer weather there is a little village that has some shops and refreshments! Home to The Pride of the Susquehanna Paddlewheel Riverboat the Island offers multiple docks for the summer season. Tonight's for us was just an evening stroll and some Miniature Golf! So this pretty much is one of the most legit places in the city as it's just mellow here no matter what time of year it is! City island has been my go to place to just chill and let my mind recalculate itself at times over the past year that I've lived in the area as it's beautiful here like you get a mix of the river a bit of the city and the just all around peacefulness of a secluded park that's in the city well you get that in the dead of winter when it's super cold and there's pretty much no one here but me! Like there's alot to do here from a baseball stadium at once side to some random food trucks on the other with a park in between it all and several benches to chill and enjoy the river and the city at. Some of my best times living here have been here from that one incredible first visit to my last one yesterday where it was good bye. I've spent a great deal of time here over the last year and it really has been an amazing place that I will forever remember! Overall I'm going to miss coming here randomly especially in those crazy rain storms who know when I'll get here again but I can almost guarantee that I'll be back at some point when I come back to visit the chocolate park. read more

An island dedicated to baseball! Perhaps the most unique ballpark in the U.S.! Plus - nearly no lines for tickets, and the prices are great - even the worst seat in the park is pretty darn good. Parking is $5, food is excellent and not overpriced, atmosphere is wonderful, and everything you want is a short walk away. If you've ever been to a MLB stadium you know that EVERYTHING (except possibly the atmosphere) is the opposite of what I just wrote. Plus - if you go to the alternate Friday evening games you get a free fireworks show besides! Really now - what's not to like? read more

I love coming here to walk. The trail offers great views of the Harrisburg skyline and a small area with pavilions and concessions. The trail circles the island and becomes deep wooded on the western side. There's also batting cages, a playground, golf course, volleyball, and a train. The Pride of the Susquehanna boat ride launches from here and is worth checking out. Of course the Senators play here as well. Walking across the Walnut Street Bridge takes you to Harrisburg and Riverfront Park. It's worth checking out because it's a steel truss bridge and closed to cars. read more
