Larry Jr was great to work with during the project. He informed of us of all progress and milestones daily. When we ordered a washer and dryer that would not fit he found other parts of the project to work on until we could get what would fit. From start to finish they took three weeks. Our project was definitely a large task in our eyes as they rerouted all the plumbing within a concrete slab. As you can see the finished project is beautiful and we are no longer embarrassed when someone requests to use our bathroom.

Both my house and the attached house were painted at the same time, so the work was extensive. My neighbor and I had agreed to work together on the project; we live on an historic designated street, and the town of Princeton, NJ requires coordination of colors, architectural details, safe removal of lead paint, etc. We agreed to seek at least three estimates and in-person consultations for the work. Joe, the owner of Five Star, was our last consult, and afterward we agreed that if the price was fair, we'd hire his company. The price was reasonable - neither the cheapest nor the most expensive we were quoted. As soon as we received our formal estimates we sent out the required deposits - half of the total price, with the rest to be paid upon completion. Five Star is truly an owner-operated company; the owner, Joe, was onsite virtually every day of the project, directing work, and often working himself. This proved to be very necessary, because the block on which my house is situated is more like an alley - houses are very close together, parking scarce, and the neighbors are, well, very involved and vocal at every stage of the project. Joe and his crew did fine work on these old houses; they went from worn and even dilapidated, to crisply bright and refreshed. Very simply, the houses look good, but getting them there was no easy task: lead paint to carefully and safely remove; frequent repairs to old woodwork and moldings; and, importantly, keeping the neighbors informed and content at every stage of the process. In short, I was delighted with the work of Five Star - everyone at the company, from the office staff to every worker, was unfailingly polite and competent. I'd like to specially commend Joe, the owner of Five Star: kind, courteous and informed, he is the sort of trustworthy service professional that one encounters only rarely. My bathroom project needed help, we had an issue with a tile job gone wrong with another contractor who had improperly set our tiles and caused 9k in damages to our brand new kitchen renovation. Within 14 hours of the mess the other contractor made (Nail It Handyman - BEWARE!!!) Alex showed up, assessed the damage, gave us a truly reasonable quote a few hours later and began working the next day! Cheslav and his brother Stan arrived with everything they needed and quickly got to work; by the time I arrived back from Floor and Decor with new tiles Stan had the demolition completed and th new cement wall boards were up and by the end of day one all three walls and the floors were ready to tile, every seam sealed, I was amazed how much they completed in a single day!!! By the next day they had all the tiles installed walls and floor and even had time to install our glass shower door and set the toilet in too!!! Unfortunately, we weren't as impressed this time. Their work was sub-par and inconsistent. The "electrician" who installed our ceiling fan couldn't figure out how to connect the wires so that the fan and light operate on separate switches. The outlet on our kitchen island is connected to a basement switch. The outlet will not work unless the basement light is on. We didn't realize this at first. My husband called Oscar and told him there was a problem with the outlet. Oscar responded that it was working before. He didn't try to address the issue or set-up a time to stop by. Since then, we've also discovered a plumbing issue. There was no project manager or team lead to review the daily work done by the workers. No one discussed with us what they were working on unless we asked. My husband had to stay on top of them to make sure the job stayed on schedule. There were days when no one came. I believe they were working on another project and ours just wasn't a priority. They get 3 stars because our kitchen is complete and so far there's been no other issues. It's also a lesson learned - just because you've used a contractor once, you should still check recent reviews before hiring them again. The cost was reasonable but sometimes it's worth paying more to avoid chaos!
