Five Star Painting did an excellent job repainting my (old, built in 1900) house and I highly recommend their services. Both my house and the attached house were painted at the same time, so the work was extensive. My neighbor and I had agreed to work together on the project; we live on an historic designated street, and the town of Princeton, NJ requires coordination of colors, architectural details, safe removal of lead paint, etc. We agreed to seek at least three estimates and in-person consultations for the work. Joe, the owner of Five Star, was our last consult, and afterward we agreed that if the price was fair, we'd hire his company. The price was reasonable - neither the cheapest nor the most expensive we were quoted. As soon as we received our formal estimates we sent out the required deposits - half of the total price, with the rest to be paid upon completion. Five Star is truly an owner-operated company; the owner, Joe, was onsite virtually every day of the project, directing work, and often working himself. This proved to be very necessary, because the block on which my house is situated is more like an alley - houses are very close together, parking scarce, and the neighbors are, well, very involved and vocal at every stage of the project. Joe and his crew did fine work on these old houses; they went from worn and even dilapidated, to crisply bright and refreshed. Very simply, the houses look good, but getting them there was no easy task: lead paint to carefully and safely remove; frequent repairs to old woodwork and moldings; and, importantly, keeping the neighbors informed and content at every stage of the process. In short, I was delighted with the work of Five Star - everyone at the company, from the office staff to every worker, was unfailingly polite and competent. I'd like to specially commend Joe, the owner of Five Star: kind, courteous and informed, he is the sort of trustworthy service professional that one encounters only rarely. We were very happy with Joe and Five Star Painting. First they gave us a reasonable quote (compared to others that asked 2-3X more). We had to wait about 6+ weeks to start the job but that was okay considering it was peak season and we were in no rush. The work started on time and Joe and his team showed up every day to prep and paint the house. Clean up every day was great. The crew was hardworking. I was very happy that Joe also recaulked many of my windows that were in bad shape. He also fixed several areas where the trim was rotting or where animals had chewed their way into the roof. We needed to have the whole exterior of our house painted. Joe came and gave a precise estimate; we requested a slightly higher grade of paint and although Joe defended their standard choice he was happy to comply with our request. The estimate was revised accordingly. Then Lisa called and gave us a date -- it was more than a month later, but we were willing to wait. When the date arrived, 2 guys came to do the exterior power washing, then for the next 4 days we had between 3 and 5 guys there every day. They were professional and courteous and they did a superb job. The house is beige with brown trim and we asked that it be kept that way. Joe decided that a slightly darker brown would be better and he was absolutely correct. The crew foreman was present at all times and Joe came by at least once each day to check on things and to ask us if there were any problems. At the end they did a total cleanup and they even removed their sign from our front lawn! (I can't count the number of signs in my garage from contractors who left them at the conclusion of the work.) We are absolutely delighted with the result. Their price is not rock bottom, but it is still very reasonable and the quality per dollar is very high. read more

STAY AWAY!!! The owner promised us a quality job then left behind an incompetent crew who did a miserable job. The only reason it was barely acceptable is that we had to supervise ourselves (the owner was nowhere to be found) an demanded rework. We are still taking care of damage caused by the crew. The owner's excuse was that, despite the name of his company, he only quoted us a 3-star job (no kidding - his words) and mediocrity was all that we had a right to expect. read more
