I temped AT the actual CityStaff office and then was permanently placed by them a few weeks later. I loved the staff there, but I will say that the staff recently was turned over completely, so that's something to keep in mind for some of the bad reviews below. I felt like they listened to my needs and were able to find me a position that really aligned to my background. I was able to fit into a needed-role at the organization up until my start date which was really helpful. While I was in the office, I was able to see the way the staff interacted with candidates. They were very professional and I could tell they truly cared about finding the right placement for each person. In reading some of the bashing below, I feel like people should keep in mind that a company isn't responsible for getting every single person their dream job. A staffing organization is working with a ton of moving parts, and the GOOD ones are only going to send a candidate to a client if they are a good match, not just because they asked nicely or because they really needed a job. If it were that easy, we'd all have our dream jobs and make a ton of money, right?! What a disappointing experience. I am inclined to believe the 'positive' reviews are not authentic because the negative ones certainly paint the real picture. Yes, they are responsive and seem genuinely interested in you when you talk to them, however, the fact that they never follow-up is an issue. I called multiple times to follow-up with an opportunity they claimed was promising for me and then crickets...The front desk lady said she would tell the person I had been in touch with to call so it's either she never followed through or the person I talked to blatantly ignored it all. Also, I find it very sketchy that they have the same jobs up for the past month, they haven't found anyone to fill those positions? Strange indeed...or perhaps they are too lazy to update their web page. Either way it's not credible and I suggest looking at more adequate staffing agencies. read more

It seem City Staff is very selective about who they decide who to work with and support! Can we say non-inclusive. I had an awful experience with them. For starters it took about 4 phone calls and emails to finally get an appointment with them. When I finally had an appointment, I was asked to complete a timed test that looked sored my competencies in excel, PowerPoint and word doc - for a temp position, which took about 2 hours! When I finally arrived at my appointment I had to complete elementary level tests that measured your spelling abilities, math and deductive reasoning. Perhaps I didn't do well enough for them, I've never been a good test taker, because I never have heard a peep from them since that appointment. They took all of my info and even called my references without my knowledge, which pissed one of my former bosses off, because I didn't have an opportunity to notify her beforehand. I followed up with them after not hearing anything for a month and they said they would contact me if they had anything come up. Yeah right, it's like a job interview you never hear back from. These people have no communication skills and no integrity for their word and their mission! Steer clear and dont be fooled. They had me take tests, interviewed by 3 people in the span of 30 mins, filled out paper work and even tax paperwork! Just to not ever hear back from them even though they promised to get back to me. Don't do it. You dont need them as a middle man anyways. read more

Washington, DC is full of employment agencies, and for the most part one is just as bad as the other. With that said, CityStaff is a breath of fresh air and a welcome addition to our community. Having been a headhunter in a previous life, I'm particularly critical and demanding of staffing companies. CityStaff has a completely different business model that truly sets them apart from the competition. The first thing you will notice as a client is that they will insist on seeing your office and meeting your staff to get a sense of your particular office's culture. In my case, they spent a lot of time talking to me to understand exactly what I look for in a candidate. And then they deliver. Every single resume they've sent me has been a person I would hire, and they are extremely responsive. There's also a difference for candidates as well. My experience with most agencies is that the "recruiters" spend only 5-10 minutes on the interview. That's not the case at CityStaff. They invited me to their office to see how candidates are interviewed and evaluated. They take just as much time getting to know their candidates as they do their bill-paying customers, which is absolutely imperative to creating "happy marriages." My experience with CityStaff seems to be completely counter to most of the more negative reviews here on Yelp. Within four days of meeting with Rich Thuemmler I was set up with my first assignment. Weeks later, I had my second, third, and fourth assignments, all within walking distance from my apartment in Logan Circle. Currently, I am in a long-term temp assignment offering me the freedom to search for full-time employment while covering my costs. To me, this is an ideal situation. A word of advice. If you want people to help you find employment, try being humble and appreciative. I regularly stop by CityStaff's office to reinforce the relationship I've developed with them over time. This place is actually quite awful. I'm not sure how it got good reviews from anyone. They're unorganized and rude. Prior to my interview there I had health issues. When I got there the lady interviewing me asked what happened. I told her that I got sick. She said "I know but what happened." Ummm. None of your business, actually. That was unacceptable. I should have known from that moment that this place was an unprofessional mess. The person in charge came in and interviewed me after that. She was condescending and kinda rude herself, but she told me she wanted me to go out for an interview with a company. I called the next day and someone said "I don't know why she told you that. We already filled that position." There were lots of issues with paperwork as well. The next time I called, the person who answered the phone was short and rude. I told her to just forget about it and not to have anyone contact me in the future. Gosh, that was a hot mess. It looks really cool, though...so I'll give them 2 stars for decor. Waste of time! I'm pleased I did not put a face to this name and wasted time, metro fare and energy. I used to work within a temp agency and saw first hand all the ugly behavior of recruiters on a daily bases. Their entire goal is to only get you in the office to fill up their fake (busy) schedule and not truly consider you for employment opportunities. I did not even in my foot in the door due to the unprofessional nosiness of the staff. Unfortunately, I'm in need of assistance in securing permanent employment but some how these people believe I should tell them my personal business (that's none of their business) in order to reschedule an appointment. Since I had to reschedule I've contacted the company via phone AND email them with notice in hopes to reschedule. The gentleman who answered was helpful in forwarding my message but insisted on knowing my reason, when I've completely informed him in the beginning of our conversation. Next, I've received a call from Michelle (recruiter) and she wanted to know my reason as well. But it was her poor approach in doing so... She sarcastically asks "did I find a job already?", and insist on why I can not make the interview with more remarks toward me like "You do not have a job right now, so what's your reason again?!" Completely rude and insensitive behavior from people working on a commission to only fill up there schedule with fake interviews and no results! Poor Quality Employment Staffing Agencies like this one are known for lying and treating people who are in need of patience and understanding during their difficult time of job search like CRAP! Again, "poor quality staffing agencies" not all agencies are famous for this behavior. You have been warned. read more

I just wanted to add a brief update about the CityStaff team, having now worked with them from the employer-client side. About six months ago, my organization was looking to add an additional hire and as a small team, CityStaff was a huge help in the hiring process. I can attest to that fact that every CityStaff candidate that came through our offices was better prepared than candidates who came through online/print job listings. You don't have to worry about the basics - the candidates are on time, appropriately dressed, with copies of background materials and a certain level of polish that is not always easy to discern from cover letters and resumes alone. Each candidate also had the core competencies required for the position, which allowed the hiring manager to evaluate candidates on the best "fit" for our organization and needs. Additionally, the CityStaff team worked to find candidates who were a good fit for our organizational culture and expectations. This was especially critical for our small team, where being able to work together is key to our efficiency. As a employer/client, there are additional advantages to using CityStaff: (1) the temp-to-hire arrangment allows you time to train candidates and determine if they're the right fit; and (2) CityStaff does an excellent job of communicating expectations of both the candidate and employer to the other party throughout the process. Like I've said before, I can't say enough good things about this company! Would highly recommend as both a former candidate and client. read more

City Staff is great! They are extremely professional and they have a ton of connections in D.C. Every company where I have done temporary work has been using City Staff for years and relies on them for temps all the time! I have been employed by City Staff for 6 months and have been placed in multiple temp positions during that time. My placements have been very steady and reliable. Every place I work, there are people with permanent jobs who tell me that they were originally placed by City Staff and really respect them as a company I don't know who these other people talked to at the office but every single person I have ever talked to at City Staff has been helpful, positive, and respectful to me. I think the people who have been giving bad reviews are being overly negative about whatever experience they have had. I have never experienced anyone at City Staff to be anything but positive and helpful. The office space is clean, open, and organized. Everyone is well dressed and polite. This is a respectable, professional staffing agency and I am extremely happy to be working with them. read more

I had a nice conversation with Brian who called to set up my initial interview meeting. The day of the interview, Brian said that I will be talking with him or one of his colleges and left me in the room. After 10mins two ladies came (one was shadowing) and starting the interview. I was disappointed to learn that the interviewer hadn't read through my resume. I kept referring to it for all the seemingly ignorant questions like : ' you want to do this ... but there is nothing on your resume that shows that.' to which I'd answer, 'actually here, I have done blah blah blah.' Then the lady asked my salary requirement, and to my response commented : ' oh good, I was thinking you would ask for something crazy.' I don't intend to work with them or refer them to friends. It was a lesson on assertion however. Even when you are looking for a job, and trying to make a good impression, it is important to remember that job interviews are a two way dialogue. read more

I was not happy with citystaff at all. They were actually a company my mother worked with a lot to hire temp staff. They called an employer from several years back who simply said they would not hire me again and didn't bother to ask me my side, they just failed to hire me. It's really unfair for you to judge people. Thank God someone else gave me a chance. I would never recommend citystaff and made sure to tell my mother to no longer do business with them. So disappointed with how my experience panned out at CityStaff! I do not recommend them at all. In the beginning, things were good and I was hopeful. I met with Michelle for the initial interview several months ago, which was an odd encounter (she was on her laptop the entire time and I'm not really sure she was paying attention to me at all) but she assured me that they could find me something entry-level. Okay, said I; great. Fast forward a few months... never really heard from Michelle again (she passed me off to one of her colleagues, Olivia) who contacted me via email and a few times via phone about a few opportunities but none of them panned out and all were QUITE far away. At one point, there was even a job she wanted to consider me for in BETHESDA. I live in Vienna. That would be a rough commute! I know people make the drive all the time but for someone who lives right by Tysons and Reston, where there are a plethora of office parks, there should be NO reason to drive up to Maryland! The ONLY temp job I ever did for CityStaff was for the duration of TWO days for an event that was in DC. That is clearly not enough to sustain a person; I needed something far more permanent. They sent me to one other possible job for an interview but the company didn't get in touch with CityStaff (allegedly) for weeks and when I finally had pestered Olivia enough, I was told that they decided to hire someone internally. Bear in mind the interview had gone quite well, I was there OVER 2 hours and met with 3 different individuals, all of whom I had a good chat with and seemed to like me (and vice versa). Bottom line is I find it so very disappointing that they (like other staffing agencies) make so many false promises and assure candidates such as myself that they can help them; yet they are TERRIBLE at keeping in touch and terrible at keeping candidates in the loop. Sadly CityStaff seems to be like all the rest, even though they claim to be different and a "boutique" staffing agency. Another staffing agency bites the dust. read more

Don't hesitate to start working with CityStaff--they are simply the best! They called me constantly (starting just two days after I contacted them!) for short and long term work and all of the positions paid very well. One temporary position paid better than the former job I had as a full-time employee. I have a background in science and health so they offered me relevant positions at public health and health care associations. I was surprised at how hard they worked to make sure the positions were good fits. I worked with Allison, Olivia, and Brian, and thought they were wonderful. Some former reviewers mentioned that the assessments are too long and not worth it. I disagree. The payoff is well worth it. CityStaff is our go-to staffing firm for our administrative and other junior level positions at our company. I handle the team building for a small business and they make my job so much easier by identifying qualified candidates for us to interview. We have made some great hires because of their help. One thing we do to help CityStaff understand our needs and the type of candidates we are looking for is draft a very detailed job description that includes the culture and benefits, in addition to what the "realistic" job experience would be like for candidates. I also keep in touch on a consistent basis with CityStaff to give my thoughts, questions and feedback pre and post-interviews, and that has helped me and them understand how to best fill our open positions. Jane C. contacted me on LinkedIn to say she was interested in learning more about my background. We scheduled a call. She struck me by her coldness, like she was a robot asking form questions. After our call she asked me to send my resume and said they have clients she can put me in front of and she would be in touch. I did not hear from her for a while so I contacted her to ask if she had any opportunities for me. She said no, but check back later. Not sure how you go from "We have some things for you" to "Check back later". A couple of weeks later she asked if I could come in for an interview at their offices, and I said yes. I filled out the long online application and sent her my references as requested. The day before the interview I asked if she could review my application and let me know if there was any other info she needed that I could send before the interview. She said no. The day of the interview, my senior dog feel extremely ill and he needed to go to the vet immediately. I called Jane to apologize and say that I had an emergency, explaining what had happened. She replied in her cold voice, ok. I said, I will contact you shortly to reschedule. She said ok. The next day I emailed her apologizing again and suggesting a few possible reschedule dates. She replied, "Unfortunately CityStaff has a no rescheduling policy for interviews. Best of luck." I've never heard of such a thing! No rescheduling?! Even after I called to explain I had a personal emergency? If it were me that had to go to the hospital, would they have said "screw you" in that case as well? According to this "no rescheduling policy" they would have. I replied that it was interesting she didn't mention this policy when I was on the phone the previous day telling her I'd reschedule later. I also said it was a good thing I'm learning now that they have no tolerance for personal emergencies because I would never want to work for a company like that. Steer clear of these folks! I walked into CityStaff my second week in DC and was completely relieved to find such kind staff who took the time to see me as a human being, not a resume. I worked at CityStaff for 6 months and was continually impressed by the quality of candidates and clients that they have. I would recommend CityStaff in a heartbeat to anyone looking for work in DC. This agency was a waste of time! Chris had sent me the testing website to complete the Microsoft applications and the formalities before I arrived at the interview the following day. When I arrived at the meeting, I had to wait 30 minutes and didn't even get interviewed with my initial contact, Chris. After the interview, I was ushered out and never heard back from them. I wasted all those hours of my life to fill out the forms and take those tests, go to the interview and was treated like another resume. I definitely won't be recommending them to anyone. read more

I was referred by my wife, who previously used their services and was placed in various temp positions and the last leading to her permanent dream job. When I walked to their office their first time, I was asked to complete a few forms and take a very simple placement test. City Staff is a terrible staffing agency. If you are looking for a job and/or temp work in the Washington D.C. area do not waste your time. Also- they lie! A LOT. Basically they act really nice and helpful and then don't call you. They placed me at two different jobs- one was for FOUR DAYS and the other was for TWO! Its like they think if they get you something no matter what you are looking for they feel like they have done their job. After they placed me the second time I never heard back from them- Luckily I got picked up by someone else and now work full time at a high end lobbying firm in downtown DC. This is only because I stopped wasting my time at City Staff. You can also tell a lot about a company that filters their Yelp reviews- I read one of the filtered responses that spoke about how they stopped calling and lied about what type of work the person would be doing... They did this to me as well. I swear all the good reviews are people who work there because everyone I spoke to through the temp jobs hated the city staff people and called them fake. It is tough looking for a job and these people do not take their job seriously at all. They do not realize they are messing with people's lives in such a profound way. I wasn't impressed with this place at all. The staff was friendly but I think they advertise for jobs that they don't actually have. They pride themselves on staffing for jobs in DC, but they told me the average salary is between $13 and $16 per hour. That was disappointing to hear. Who can live on that in DC? read more

I was referred to CityStaff by a friend of mine who was successful finding a job through them earlier this year. Almost immediately after submitting initial information, I was contacted by Eroica who was amazing in regards to getting my resume and initial phone screening out of the way. I was asked into the office the same day for a face to face meeting, before I even had the chance to get the standard MS proficiency testing done. Eroica was very professional in how she went about taking down my information, asking questions, and ensuring me that they *might* be able to find me placement. Before I left, I had to fill out paperwork but also got the chance to meet with Jennifer Pearce, the VP of the company. She has been in constant contact with me regarding opportunities, interviews, and follow ups. It's too early to report being successful through CityStaff, but even if for whatever reason I'm not, their intake process, staff, friendliness and array of opportunities earn CityStaff the highest of stars from me. I've already recommended them to a friend, and to any recent grad looking for a job in the DC metropolitan area, definitely consider working with them. If there were any cons, it would be that the majority of offerings are within downtown DC as opposed to northern VA but, then again, it's called CityStaff for a reason... I've been personally worked with CityStaff for the past six months. Since I started, I've had one of the greatest experiences of my professional career. I've often heard from my friends that temporary (or temp) work was awful, and that I would never really amount to anything more than just a work-horse-for-hire, and that I'd be tossed out and forgotten. I'm glad my friends were wrong. When I first arrived at CityStaff on one of the coldest days in D.C.'s recorded history, a day when even the Federal government had closed due to "hazardous conditions", CityStaff was still open for business. I met with Brian (who has since moved on from CityStaff) and he listened with intent about what I needed as job-seeker, and the type of work I was interested in performing. With a smile, Brian extended a generous hand, introduced me to the rest of the team at CityStaff, including its President, Judy. A few days later I had my first position. Nick and Olivia at the CityStaff headquarters on Kst. regularly called me for some of the most amazing opportunities I've ever had. I never felt like a whipping-boy, or a dump for someone else's excess paperwork. I left myself open to CityStaff's judgement and held a number of different positions from last-minute receptionist for an fantastic NPO, to data analyst for a prestigious law-firm. If I ever had anything close to a problem, Nick, Olivia, and the rest of the team at CityStaff helped me to resolve the issue immediately so that I still could still work and the company could stay in business. CityStaff's had some bad reviews around yelp, and having worked with a number of other CityStaffer's, and CityStaff itself, I have to wonder what those people did to such a great organization. Judy, the president and co-founder of the company, personally oversee's the business and its practices, and CityStaff's new VP, Jen has herself worked with me to improve my job skills as I leave CityStaff for the city of Chicago. While there's a number of different organizations in D.C. that could put you to work for a paycheck, there's really only one that will help you out in your job-search with practical, good-sense advice, and place you in a position where you will be matched with an organization whose interest are in inline with yours. read more

CityStaff is hands down the best staffing agency I have ever work with. I interviewed with Eroica and she really took the time to go through my resume and learn about my long term career goals. She found an assignment for me within the first 2 weeks! My background is in education and Eroica was always great about selecting assignments that fit my background and career goals. She would also check in with me every few weeks to see how I was doing and how i was enjoying working at whichever organization I was temping in at the moment. She was really focused on selecting organizations that could help me build more skills for my resume. I am just always in amazement with CityStaff. I LOVE them! Their employees are beyond helpful and responsive. They answer the phone on the first ring and are always in touch when you need them to be. I emailed them on the weekend not expecting to hear back until Monday and I had an email response from them that same day it was incredible. I have worked with CityStaff for the last 8 years' as an employer. They are the only agency I work with where I don't request an interview with a candidate before having them start as I know they're properly vetted. Many of the temps sent to me have become long term temps or converted to full time staff. As they are boutique they are focused on quality rather than quantity and when your temp arrives on site the difference is clear. If you're in need for an entry level or admin focused temp I strongly recommend. The staff are warm and helpful and have, on more than one occasion, helped me when I really needed it. I contacted a recruiter from City Staff in hopes that they wold help me find employment to relocate to the Washington DC area and was very surprised to learn that they are not willing to work with you until you live in that area. - Well that about defeats the purpose for me! Instead of even offering to look at my resume and interview with me when I visit that area next week, the recruiter spent the duration of our phone call convincing me that she could not help me. I have been working with City Staff since September and have had a great experience. From the very beginning, I felt that they wanted to get to know me and find a right fit for me. They have found me long-term positions at great companies in the area. They emphasized my strengths and helped me gain experience in other areas. I was able to start working the week after I first interviewed and have been able to work almost every day I wanted to since then. CityStaff is good at deceiving people. You will walk in and everyone will seem like your best friend. They'll feed you this line about how they only put people in positions that fit your career goals but the reality is that you will be offered assignments often less than one week in nature, for low money, and doing some of the most monotonous tasks you can imagine - but you won't know that because the staff will be very vague about what exactly you will be doing and sometimes they will simply lie. For example: I was told I would be going to an organization for two weeks and doing a number of different office-type tasks. I needed some money so I accepted but I was really at the organization for one week and did the same repetitive five-minute computer process for eight hours each day until I could barely even see anymore. Another example, I was called and asked if I could go to another office and move some files around, physically. I'm a fairly strong guy and that sort of work doesn't bother me so I said "yes." I got there (late, because CityStaff told me the wrong start time) and quickly saw that there would be no file moving, just file pulling from about (and I do not exaggerate) three hundred file boxes for an audit - for the paltry sum of thirteen dollars an hour. A reasonable wage to strong arm some boxes around, surely, but not for what we ended up doing. I was then lied to once again by the staff. I was told that they had an interview for me at a government affairs office and that this client was looking for someone who was looking for advancement and growth in a new organization, a father-son organization. Well, first of all, the organization was run by brothers, and secondly they were looking for nothing but a career administrative person who did not expect any promotion. Once again, CityStaff has wasted my time. So, to get up to speed: I've had three dealings with CityStaff and I have been lied to and deceived by CityStaff three times. Now we come to two weeks ago: I've sent four emails - to three different people there - over the course of the last two weeks and have received a response to zero of them. Apparently this is their way of ending a professional relationship: ignoring people. Also, I walked into the office one time and saw one of them talking on the phone and drinking beer. Be careful and don't get sucked into their deception and apparent kindness. This is not just me feeling this way, many of the other temps I interacted with at assignments felt this same way. CityStaff is a boutique recruitment firm with great entry-level opportunities (many of which are not advertised). My experience with the firm was mediocre. The beginning of my experience was positive. They appeared eager to work with me, and I was told my resume would be submitted to five organizations they believed I would fit well with. I agreed to take on some short-term temporary assignments in the meantime but expressed my desire to begin full-time assignments or work in January. Unfortunately, I agreed to take an assignment that I later realized I could not fully commit to because my schedule for the month of December did not line up well. When I expressed this, in advance of the assignment, I explained I could fill it for a couple of days until they could find a more permanent replacement, but I could not start working full-time until January 5. It suffices to say they were not happy about this and I was dropped from consideration for that organization, and consideration from all other full-time positions they were considering me for. The best way to work with CityStaff is to be extremely flexible. Only agree to take an assignment if you are absolutely certain you will be able to do it. If you keep this in mind and you do well on your assignments you will have a full-time position within weeks. read more

What a waste of time! They post a series of job titles that they have you apply for and after a whole week they don't respond even if you follow-up via telephone and then they automatically reply to you letting you know that there aren't any positions and that you don't qualify for them. It's not like most other employment agencies where they might follow-up and maybe at least tell you what sort of tweaks you could make for your résumé or what not. They just ignore you and make the process of finding a job even more frustrating than it should be. read more

After hearing horror stories about various temping agencies in the area (ie ones that don't use computers to keep track of anything, others that weren't professional, etc), I decided to try out CityStaff. Everyone in that office is extremely helpful, friendly, and efficient. They were able to have me temping on my first assignment within a few days of getting through the quick and painless application process. I was contacted through LinkedIn to try out CityStaff. I went in, completed the interview process, and was hopeful. I never heard from the person. I would check in every once in a while to see if there was anything available and told no. The last time I checked in, I was told there were a few positions if I was interested and said yes.
