In terms of value, this was the BEST option for me as a replacement gym. Post-Pandemic, my old gym…read moreincreased their prices 3Xs and didn't bother to honour my membership cost as a client of many years, so I had to take my business elsewhere! Looking at the gyms within a 10 - max 15min - drive, there weren't many options for me. The nearby chain gyms were just way too crowded/younger, bro crowd and the other box gyms were CrossFit places which wasn't what I was looking for. So weighing my options, I decided to sign up at my local community centre. Despite being an older centre, this place basically has everything INCLUDING group classes like yoga, Zumba, and a bunch of other things. The centre itself has a pool, skating rink, courts for pickleball, basketball, and a weight room. Outside, there's a skate park, basketball court, beach volleyball court, & various soccer fields. Of course, it's surrounded by various parks, trails, and there's even a private tennis club around the back. So far, so good, people at the front desk seem very nice. Of course the experience of the classes will vary depending on the instructor. And right now, the fitness classes aren't in a stellar studio due to kids Summer camps taking over the entire place! So hopefully that'll change once the kiddos are back to school. Membership prices are MORE than reasonable and they even include the fitness classes which is an absolute bonus! Weight room is small, but every time that I've walked by, it is almost empty. No one filming themselves or annoyingly flexing in the mirror to check if the few pumps of iron has made their arms grow! It's an older crowd, but at this point, I welcome that as opposed to the former gym bro crowd. There is also a discount for Seniors AND if another family member signs up!

This was the seventh year of the Annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, the fifth year…read morethat my league (the View Askew Street Hockey League, a.k.a. VASHL) participated, and the first year that I was finally able to participate as a member of the View Askew Girls. I have been hyped about this tourney from the very beginning of our league's attendance. I couldn't participate for the first few years due to being stationed in Italy with the U.S. Navy, and now that I have, I have been blown away. There are categories for every type of ball hockey player from the youngest kids to the oldest adults and from really competitive to recreational. The entire area around BHI Brantford just turns into a mini village. Besides the actual rinks that are on premises, there are fences and makeshift boards erected anywhere there is room to accommodate as many people as possible. There are a few vendors. One, of which, I got a brand new Whalers hat for only $20 and it wasn't a knock off. There are also a few food tents and a really good ice cream stand. Instead of dipping a cone, they'll do a flavored swirl around the edges of the ice cream cone. Of the food that I had on premises, it was way better than that of similarly related tents in America. The only real issues that I noticed is the lack of an ATM and parking. With all those people packing this area, installing an ATM in the arena building would be a great idea. Parking is really rough in this area because immediately outside the location is a residential neighborhood. I witnessed a whole row of cars receiving tickets seemingly because there was not a "No Parking" placard located in the area that they parked. All in all, though, this is a fantastic event with an even greater cause to support, the Lung Association of Canada. My league has been returning for the past 5 years and as long as funds hold up, I definitely will be returning again and again and again.
