My wife and I came in for newborn photos in our son's second week. We were exhausted; this is our first kid and we were a bit out of sorts at the time, but still wanted to capture this bizarre and wonderful time in all our lives. And fortunately, Maggie took over as soon as we got there. We got to sip coffee and enjoy the show while she worked. She was meticulous and patient, taking the time to get each shot perfect while gently soothing our son whenever he became fussy (it's hard work being a baby model). She was incredible, actually. Amidst all the posing and shooting, all he needed were her well-timed expert shushes and he was straight back to work each time. True baby charmer. And while we weren't expecting to get in on the action - as tired as we looked and felt- Maggie insisted on getting a few of us with the baby. I'll be darned if you couldn't even tell how tired we were in the photos. In the end, we were not disappointed with the results. Every shot has something a little different. And all were gorgeous and flattering, to baby and parents. It was a real task picking favorites. These are once-in-a-lifetime portraits of our family that lived up to our expectations in every way. I have had many photos taken of my kids over the years and have made many purchases from them. They are pricey but I thought their work was beautiful and worth it....until the last order I picked up from them. I bought a very large print that looks like one of my kids was photoshopped into. It's an original photo so not sure why it looks like that. I called and told them about the poor quality and they have not done anything for me...been waiting for a call back. Beautiful Work! We drive nearly three hours to have our photos taken at Classic Kids. Monica has captured our growing family three times over the last 6 years and we couldn't recommend her and her team enough! From the moment you step in the studio until the time you have your photos on your walls, they go out of their way to make sure you are happy. They are patient and playful with the little ones and somehow always manage to capture their personalities and facial expressions just perfectly. My kids feel at ease and genuinely have fun during their photo shoots. The hardest part of the whole process is selecting which photos to order because we always love them all! The BEST photography in Chicago! Yesterday we visited the downtown Chicago (Armitage) Classic Kids Studio for our maternity (pre-baby) photo shoot with Katie and had such an awesome experience. My husband, my dog (Oscar) and myself had such a wonderful time and felt so comfortable working with Katie. She really knew how to capture our personalities and the special natural moments. Not all that "posy posy" stuff....which was exactly what we wanted..."to capture the beauty of being pregnant." Our dog was even able to be apart of it ... which was priceless. They new exactly how to engage him and make it fun for all of us. I also have to rave about our engagement session we did at the Winnetka studio with Natalie last year. I would highly recommend doing an engagement session with them because if you are looking for something more artsy and fun -- they really know how to capture that...and you will have unique photos vs. the posed type. We won a shoot for our 2 dogs at a benefit and took them there this afternoon. Our dogs are not the easiest to wrangle and they did such a good job with them, we are so impressed. Also, they emailed us the pricing for the prints and digital images beforehand so I'm not sure where the reviews stating shock over pricing are coming from. We wanted to get our 13-year old Yorkie's photos taken and came across Classic Kids. I called and spoke with Maggie. She is AMAZING! She is kind, creative and loves what she does. The day of the photoshoot, Monica and Maggie were excellent. They were gentle with our dog and really made him comfortable. When we met to go over the photos, it was very hard to decide because they were all excellent. We really appreciate the different pricing options. Maggie always was aware of our budget. This review is strictly based on the cost of having access to my pictures. Please note that the photo shoot was great, the people are fantastic. The bombshell came when my wife and I went to select my families pictures. The wife was driven there because the cost of the photo shoot was less than most other studios. This got her in the door. They told her that we only pay for the pictures that we won't... The problem is the price gouging for me and my family to take home our pictures. I understand paying good money for quality pictures and frames. I'm am okay with that. My biggest problem is the cost to edit a pictures was $50-$100 depending on what they needed to edit on each picture. When you pay a lot of money to have access to your pictures, then they shouldn't add hundreds of dollars to make simple edits to a couple pictures. The biggest shock to me was the cost of a digital print (meaning an email copy of that picture). I honestly felt like they were holding my family hostage when I couldn't even have access to my kids pictures, unless I paid out $1200 for only 10 digital pictures. That was their most cost effective package. So I was either forced to pay a high amount to have the picture printed, or an even more outrageous amount to have an emailed copy of my kids pictures. Even the pictures that we paid for to print and frame, we still do not have all access rights to that picture unless we buy the digital copy. It's not right. Please search around and compare prices. The people do a good job, but it will COST you to bring home your pictures. I would not come back and make this mistake again. read more

October 2018 (more updates below): I went to Classic Kids in 2016 for pictures of our newborn daughter. My wife and I were new parents and very excited for the photo shoot. The cost of the shoot was covered as a Christmas gift and we were not told the prices of pictures when we arrived. I (mistakenly) trusted the picture prices to be fair so we did the shoot and had a good time. A couple weeks later the proofs were ready for us to come review. Then the bombshell - the cost of EACH picture (without framing) is the cost of the entire catelog for most other photographers. Moreover, we had no digital rights to the pictures of our own family! They wanted to sell me pictures of our daughter indefinitely - of course no value to them other than very high profit margins (likely over a thousand percent). When I brought this up to the owner she still did not hand over the digital pictures and instead threw in a free coffee book (which for no good reason was priced at a couple hundred dollars!). We are now back in the market for family pictures and have found a great photographer for 10X LESS than Classic Kids and we keep the digital pictures! I have withheld a negative review of Classic Kids but no longer can after seeing the true market price. Please do your research before committing to them! They claim that no one else can take a photo like they can..... Not true. Use your money more wisely and go with another company and invest the huge difference in cost! Another benefit is the ability is to take family pictures more often when the photographer is reasonably priced. Reply to me if you'd like more information on the cost of the pictures - it's well into the four figures for just a handful of them. UPDATE MARCH 2019: The people at Classic Kids called my mother to try and sell her our stack of proofs for $250 since they are going to "throw them away." This was my original complaint. They have no use for the subjects in their pictures other than to keep us on the hook to pay more and more for the pictures we paid for upfront. If you are considering using Classic Kids expect: - High photo-shoot prices - Extremely high photo prices (you do not own the digital proofs so you HAVE to get them printed with Classic Kids) - No ownership of your pictures - Paying for your proofs in 3 years when they discard them For the 5 star reviews, if you are considering CK, I'd ask what they paid and whether they own their digital proofs... read more

Monica was unprofessional and racist!! I stopped by in person to schedule a photo shoot for my new puppy who I rescued and adopted from my trip to Ukraine. After spending a month in Ukraine helping refugees and animals in the shelters, I simply wanted to come back home and capture some memorable images of my new pup Kyiv. Kyiv was a survivor of a missile attack in Ukraine and became an orphan after his mom died during his birth. I'm also a two time survivor of Cancer since this past December and I shared the story with Monica who didn't pay much attention instead was more focused on get a personal pictures with Kyiv. The point of sharing my story with Monica was so she could capture that in an image because there's usually a story behind an image and that's what I was hoping to capture and give as a gift to my fourteen year old son so he could have to show strength and resilience. I was discriminated against because of the color of my skin and not welcomed as a customer. I left her studio crying yesterday, she thought because of the color of my skin that I couldn't afford to pay. I was born and raised in Lincoln Park and wanted to support a local photographer. Not only did I want to support a local photographer, I wanted to support a woman photographer because I as a woman support women in business and believe in uplifting instead of setting back as Monica did to me. Excellent, gifted photographers, but pricing and in-person viewing of prints is out of sync with reality for a busy parent who is also concerned about saving for college. Our rating is 2 stars due to the lack of convenience and poor pricing options: 1. No Digital Gallery: Classic Kids does not offer a digital site for reviewing your photos. This makes it difficult to select anything quickly. We would love nothing more than to enjoy an hour or two selecting photos but we don't have the time due to hectic travel/work schedules. The photographers are lovely - BUT they seem to only cater to parents who have time to spend pouring over photos - in person. You are asked not to bring your child to the studio for viewing which means you had better get your babysitter lined up on a Saturday. Another major inconvenience. 2. Overly High Pricing for JPG Images: In terms of pricing - their costs for JPG images for your annual holiday card is about $150. This is extraordinarily high. The print fees for the photos are fairly standard, but on the higher side as well compared to other photographers. We bought into the marketing and didn't think about the convenience factor. Our recommendation to busy parents is to shop around for a studio that caters to a wider audience. We are going back to our wedding photographer - Steven Gross - and a few other photographers for the next set of photos. We really needed flexibility for viewing the pictures, and found that Classic Kids just is not the right place for the harried, professional parent. Our photos are beautiful! We have been to Classic Kids twice now- once for my daughters newborn shoot and then for her 1 year old pictures. Each time I am absolutely amazed by the quality and vision of each photo! The photographs are beautiful and they manage to capture so many different faces and looks of your child! Each time we went in we had Monica as our photographer but the rest of the staff was so helpful and friendly- it is definitely a team effort. They roll with the punches and take their time to ensure that you have a variety of amazing shots. For our one year pictures my daughter was a little crabby ( ok a lot crabby) because of a missed nap and we were nervous that she would be crying in all the pictures. I don't know how they did it but every picture was precious and you could not even tell she was in a mood! They managed to capture every single one of her facial expressions and it is such an amazing memory to have. The printed prints are available in many different framing and mounting options and the ladies at the studio have a great eye for what they suggest and ideas that they throw out. As a native of Lincoln Park, Classic Kids is a right of passage for any parent. With that being said, my expectations were high (very high). At the newborn shoot I was a struggling first-time mom; overwhelmed to say the least & the photographers were great. So great that we've built relationships with them. I had her shoot done when she was just 1 week old & then again at 1 year old, 2 years old & yet again at 4. They are amazing with kids; at both of my children's newborn shoots they had patience & ability to calm them for hours on end. I recently had my son's newborn shoot & it was epic! Today, photos exist almost exclusively digitally & rarely are seen physically. Classic Kids countered this & by advising me on which photos & relative sizing were best specific for my house. They even helped me display my wedding photographs that I would have never gotten to without their help. Yes, it is expensive but truly worth it when I look back on memories we have on display. We initially received a very special gift from our cousin sponsored by Classic Kids in honor of our son's battle with cancer since he was 8 months old. Geting kids to sit is difficult...but the staff at Classic Kids made that process fun for everyone. And they did it...they captured all the kids in priceless poses that we will now have forever. The pictures we had done here are by far my FAVORITE of my children we have ever had done. The attention to details and creative outlook doesn't even begin to compare to other photographers. They take their time to make sure all 3 of my girls were relaxed and comfortable before jumping right into it- which allowed for great shots. At one point my 2 year old decided she was done and wanted nothing to do with pictures and was kicking and screaming. We stepped out without her to come back to them playing and taking some great pictures! They will do what it takes to get the shot and we TRUELY were treated like family. You charge a fortune and state it's because your materials are so expensive. umm, no they're not, you charge a fortune because of the neighborhood you are in and because people are stupid enough to pay for it. here's her review of her own business: The "new" photographers at Classic Kids have actually been there for 10 years and are fantastic! They have great skills working with kids and we were really thrilled with the photos they took. We worked with Kevin previously, and he was good, but the ladies there now have all the skills and actually work a little better than he did with my girls. STAY AWAY!!! Unless you have won the lottery. They say they are not for everyone, and that clearly means if you are not a millionaire this place isn't for you. Yes they are very nice and the sitting is a pleasant experience. But just wait until you go into look at your pictures, and they completely gouge you on pricing. Would you like to send 100 birth announcements to friends and family $350. Would you like to actually see any of the photos taken again $100+ per photo 5x7. You would think you would at least get the digital copies of the photos taken with the watermarks right? Nope only for photos you buy. So $1000 later we will get to see 5 photos ever again. When I voiced my frustration with the pricing they said this is all explained up front and they don't want any surprises. My wife handled the booking of this and she did say they told her the sitting fee of $300 some dollars, but didn't provide the pricing that they claimed. I would have walked out and eaten the $300 sitting fee but didn't want to ruin the experience for my wife. If you don't care about how much something costs by all means go. Don't get me wrong I enjoy nice things and will pay a premium for them but what I will not tolerate is being ripped off! read more

Save your money and just hire a good photographer to do a photo shoot and get all digital copies you need. The prices to get anything at this place is so ridiculously exorbitant, it's a joke. Even for the actual prints we ordered, you don't even get a digital copy of them. I only found out from reading one of the reviews here that you can get a digital copy of the prints you ordered, but only with a very low resolution setting that is only suitable for viewing on your phone. So I called and asked why I didn't even get the low quality digital copies, but they didn't really have an answer. All in all, for me to get a high resolution copy would only cost me $450 per photo. You want the photos to be used on holiday cards through well known sites like Shutterfly or Tinyprints? $450! They have a special deal with Minted.com if you want to use them for Christmas cards. That will still cost you $180! But the Minted is more expensive and don't have as many options as other sites. Thinking maybe you can save money by getting holiday cards directly through Classic Kids? Think again! They only have very limited designs that are very poorly made (I have their birth announcements to prove it), and they will only cost you about 5 times the cost of the cards from Shutterfly. Sounds like a total rip off to me. So even though you will get a lot of photos at the viewing session at their studio, you will never ever see them again unless you can take out a second mortgage on your house. Update: Received the link to the mobile app where you can view the photos that you've actually purchased in print. They are tiny very low resolution photos, and even those photos have their company watermarks across them. Ridiculous. read more

So many things I love about Classic Kids .. First the atmosphere is great. From the time you walk in you want to come hang out here. Second the photographers and their assistants have been great. I 've been going here for 8+ years first with my niece and then personally with my own kids. I have worked with many different photographers, most recently Sarah, and their ability to not only capture great shots, but also recommend crop spots and methods of displaying make me feel like I am making an art gallery for myself. I've gotten shots with my 10 day old.. wanted to get shots with the umbilical cord still in and also at 2.5 years. They also made me feel beautiful in my pregnancy shots.. and the ones right after baby was born. Now as my little one heads to kindergarten I am going back for more shots! Last summer we tried out Classic Kids for my maternity photos and and then went right back for a newborn photo shoot and have been been back a couple more times over the past year for some quick shoots because we not only get the most amazing photos but we really enjoy the personalized experience. We are blown away with how friendly and accommodating Monica, Maggie and Joni are. When you have a session scheduled they dedicate that time to you and to making your child happy in order to take the most beautiful photos (which we learned during our last shoot is not an easy task when you have a 10 month old who is tired, hungry and hates what she's wearing or if you have a dog who is terrified of a flashbulb). I just had to do a search for classic kids to contact them about ordering more photos from my recent shoot and stumbled upon this. I thought I would write something quickly because I loved my experience so much! Lisa and Katie were really amazing with my kids, but especially my youngest who is autistic. It is really difficult to find people who work well with him and they both wowed me! They made us all feel so special because of their patience and ability to connect with him AND out other kids at the same time. Kevin got great shots, and I have not seen many baby photographers do black and white, but be prepared to spend a fortune. The sitting fee is $295 + $35 per extra person for about an hour, and each print is at least $125. There are extra services for color touches, retouching, etc. for the baby parts, it is at least $1000, and this does NOT include the mats and framing. Most orders I saw were $8000 - $10,000. So if you have the money, go for it! I also felt the sales girl really pressured use to buy all the shots, and get large sizes and color tinting even though we said we were on a budget and didn't have space. go in there knowing exactly what you can spend and your space! read more

I'd give them a 2.5 if I could. We really liked Maggie & Amy personally and they did take several fantastic shots of our little girl-were this the only factor I'd probably give them a 4-4.5. We just were not pleased with the CK pricing and felt that CK does their very best to force you to buy as many of their expensive prints as they can and that if you want digital copies of the photos they really gouge you. We understand the prints are intellectual property; however they charge over $1k for all of the images (I think it was $400-ish for 1 photo) whereas I'd priced out about 10+ photographers for newborn/maternity photos previously and they all charged in the $250-400 range for digital copies of all of the photos taken. I should mention here that we were given the price list and saw that it was $4xx for a digital file, which we assumed to me one disk/copy of all of the photos, which again is consistent with what we know about the photography market; we never thought for a moment it was for 1 digital copy of 1 image :( CC does give you some digital copies (only those you buy prints of) but they have watermarks all over the front of them so they might work electronically but most people would never print them. We took our photos at a holiday event and loved the idea of memorializing the holiday but we'd definitely go back to the photographer we used previously with much more reasonable prices (and truthfully an artistic style/originality we prefer). They do have good photographers and a nice product but the fact that you can not get digital copies even just for the prints you have already ordered even after I have spent $1500.00 on their services, will make me never go back there. If I pay that much for photography I want some jpeg back ups when I am spending so much money! These people know how to take great great pictures!!!! Whoever is hiring, knows what they are doing! I cannot imagine a higher energy group of people going to all lengths that they go to, to create that magical moment in your kids' eyes and expressions. When you have finicky grandkids like we do, it takes a miracle to get everyone smiling or to be expressive in a way that will be cherished forever. They really capture that moment better than anyone in the business. It is expensive... yeah, but so what. What they produce is priceless IMO and I'd pay twice what they are asking if they'd ask for it. There is just no one else like them in the city. They are the best in the business and no one compares to what they deliver. We use them for holiday greetings and more. Now they do color pictures too, but for me, it's still the "classic" black and white photos that they create that are truly timeless. We hang those images proudly in our house and wow! Classic Kids and Lisa have been wonderful and creative. Prior to our photo shoot we had passed by the studio on our daily walks and admired the photos in the window. Finally, we bit the bullet about a year and a half ago and had photos taken with our dog who is extremely shy. While it was expensive, it was worth every penny and we have used all of the wonderful shots to the max. Lisa worked her charm to get quite a few wonderful pics. She then helped us create amazing Save-the-date cards that all our friends and family loved! We loved our pics so much that Lisa helped us create a guest book for our wedding. I am a mom of four little ones and I have admired Classic Kids Photography for well over a decade now. I used to live down the street from the Lincoln Park studio on Armitage and would always find myself amazed by the photos in their storefront windows. I moved to the suburbs and now admire the rotating displays of darling baby photos in their Winnetka studio.
