In today's society, things that are broken are often discarded and thrown away…read more I attended a kintsugi workshop at The Art Center Highland Park. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object. The broken pieces are mended together then painted with gold, silver or platinum paint. The result is that the broken piece is now transformed and by highlighting the flaws and accepting the imperfections, this is now a completely different and beautiful object. Our workshop was taught by Takahashi, Mami, a skilled teacher from Tokyo (by Ghibli Museum she told us). All materials were provided, even the broken pottery (an advanced student brought their own broken vase). The upstairs studio was open, well-ventilated and set up with all materials laid out in an orderly fashion. I appreciated the knowledge and experience that our teacher had, as a skilled working apprentice under a Grand kintsugi Master. She walked around, demonstrating and providing hands-on instruction. As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Maybe I can incorporate a bit of this practice myself, and accept flaws or imperfections rather than deeming something less than perfect and thus must be discarded. I've taken classes here before and attended gallery showings. This is a close location to downtown HP, has a parking lot and street parking.

The BEST artist I have ever encountered in my life. When we first met with her, we were even more happy as she was able to offer us great suggestions in designing our custom made ketubah. Judith is incredible! She's talented beyond belief, her ketubahs are true works of art as she puts everything into her art work and that feeling is definitely portrayed through the beauty of her pieces. She created such a beautiful masterpiece for us and we now are proud to display it at our home. I cannot even tell you guys how many compliments I have received on our piece. It is absolutely exceptional and the first time I saw it, I couldn't imagine a more perfect piece symoblizing the relationship between my husband and I. If you want a perfect, unique, exceptional and mostly custom made art work done by a special person, choose Judith Joseph. The colors turned out unbelievable as she uses a special kind of paint in her work made out of egg yolk I believe. From all our wedding "vendors" we could not be happier with the work that Judith did for us that we will have as a lasting memory for the rest of our lives. We actually look forward to working with Judith again in the future for a different type of art work.
