6/25: Wow. Quite the change in experiences from the last time we were here. I ordered a seasonal special: which was like a shrimp stir-fry. The way it was described in the menu it sounded fantastic. But what was brought to the table was the most oversimplified, basic stir-fry dish. Rice, shrimp and what seemed like a sauce that was poured out of a jar labeled " La Choy". A real gem of the north woods. You drive to the north woods of Wisconsin to intentionally avoid the trappings of big city life. But when it comes time to dine out, it's impossible to leave your metropolitan expectations behind. You find yourself wanting both the north woods experience AND a good glass of wine and a well constructed sandwich. This is where I think Clayton's nails it. It's a wine bar, with a great choice of beers, well crafted sandwiches, a slice of Prime Rib or an eclectic choice of appetizers. So you can walk in, temporarily park the north woods outside with your car, reenter the fine dining world and when finished, go back to the outdoor life. Not two worlds easily bridged, but I think Clayton's exists in both quite well. read more

Ok, my second review ;) and m not related or an employee. We stopped and had the Fillet and Queen cut prime rib. Out of this world!!! Cooked perfectly. The most amazing prime rib I have tasted Up North. The Filet could have been cut with a fork. Add a spot on Old Fashion and an amazing glass of Pinot Noir (very hard to find a good Pinot by the glass). Top it off with friendly service, Michaela was an absolutely adorable waitress, and Jay was welcoming and took the time to listen to what we were looking for and guided us in the right direction. And an owner that stops and says hello and checks in on you later. I am looking to making more memories at Clayton's. read more

Very good and refreshing atmosphere in the Northwoods with a city element behind its ambience.

My wife and I went to the Three Lakes Winery and were looking for a place to eat. She saw Claytons 1881 and we decided to check it out. We were very pleased. This is a new and growing eatery and drinking spot. We enjoyed it, the food was very good and they make their own potato chips. Very surprised. The staff was friendly and engaging. I had the Patty Melt, my wife the Gyro Burger, both were elevated burgers with excellent beef, as you would expect in Wisconsin. This is a spot that is now on our list, we will be back for the upcoming outdoor, live entertainment, drinks, and social atmosphere. Don't pass by this gastropub in the Northwoods. read more

The truffle fries where chewy and tough. Great burger on a shitty white un toasted bun, strike one , friday night and the place is almost empty. They ran out of T-Gin on Labor day weekend, someone needs to get their Shhh together if you want this beautiful place to make it up here. read more

Four of us were here on a Saturday evening (reservations/patio). We had heard good things. We were seated immediately. We each ordered an entree and a beverage: Shrimp alfredo, the walleye, a large salad, a burger; wine, beer, a cocktail, soda. Request to have grilled chicken on salad was "not possible this evening, we don't have any chicken in the kitchen." Alfredo was good; hamburger appeared to be a frozen patty on a WonderBread bun (and just about as flavorful), walleye was ok, but an oddly shaped, small filet served on about 4 T of carrot puree. No lemon, no tartar sauce. The entrees were served without sides. No bread, no salad, no soup. The prices are fairly high for the Northwoods - 30$ for the walleye, 14$ for a glass of wine (an Italian pino grigio). Service was reluctant. It may have been an off-night.... staffing? Regardless, we won't be back. read more

Went there for dinner and as we walk up, the guy who I assume was the owner tells us that it's gonna be a "solid 45". When we were fine with that, being they were still open for another hour and 45 minutes, he quickly added that they may run out of food while we are waiting. While this was happening, an elderly foursome attempted to walk in without checking in. He literally chased them inside, repeatedly and rudely asking if he can help them. They obviously didn't hear him, so he finally asked if they speak English! Absolutely terrible way to run a business, and I hope they go under, and quick! Don't give them your business, anything else will be better. read more

do not waste your money on the food. I ordered bison Chili for $20 which is an outrageous price to begin with. what I got was a bowl full of noodles with some kind of marinara type sauce wit's a few beans mixed in for good measure and a ton of cheese on top. my wife ordered a $17 burger medium well and it was cooked completely rare. we spent 114 total for the whole family and everything but the chicken tenders and a couple slices of pizza (also low quality) went to waste. Waited quite a while for our food, then was told as it was coming out they were out of gluten free buns. Burger was undercooked, waitress forgot to bring the Bloody Mary chaser and forgot the chips with the burger. Brussels sprouts were hard. Waitress was nice, bussing several tables at once. read more

My husband and I stopped for lunch after riding the Three Eagle Trail from Eagle River to Three Lakes. Very conveniently located across the highway from the trail. We had a burger and a buffalo chicken sandwich. Both were very good. We ate outside on their nicely designed patio. The owner was very friendly and attentive. Good food, well run establishment. Also a great spot to take a break if you're biking the trail from Eagle River and back. Good selection of tap beers also. read more

Good drinks, great food, great service, solid atmosphere. It's still early days, with a limited menu and a short staff, but we were treated extraordinarily well and will certainly return. Definitely worth a stop. read more

Stopped for our first time for lunch. The owners were so welcoming and friendly. We started with Mrs Margarita (so good). We shared the spinach blueberry strawberry salad, the Claytons burger and homemade chips with onion dip. Ingredients were fresh and tasty, and plenty of food to share. Then yummy homemade carrot cake with ice cream for dessert. The owner said the recipe is her grandmothers. Can't wait for our next trip to the area to stop in for dinner. read more
