My friend and I stumbled across this treasure trove of (literal) trash crafted into art on the…read moresecond floor of MacArthur Mall. We were killing time in the mall before the haunted place downstairs opened. My curiosity grew strong, as I was mesmerized by the colors and weirdness of it. I had to know what this was. It probed me to ask more questions with the urgency to seek answers. The gentleman informed me that it is an immersive art experience. I am a sucker for some immersive art. The seller for me was him being so straight faced and his dedicated commitment to convincing me that he was possibly a resident or may have had a friend that was from Garbage Town. It was either going to be $10 of très cool or a $10 regret. You will be advised to read the signs, which we did and you should too if you choose this mission to visit Garbage Town. Trust me, it will enhance the experience and make everything more clear. It is a macabre satire of the world's wasteful attitude. The world's inadequate collection of trash and improper disposal is portrayed in the installations. It forces one to open their eyes because the sizable amount of trash you're meandering through is right in front of you, not hidden out of sight. Garbage Town is where the rejected and excluded reside, a place where the "no longer wanted " inhabit. It brings to light the social injustices and issues that arise from this "throw away" mentality. There were installations that were quite humorous, but sad at the same time because there is truth to it. Garbage Town is a thought provoking experience that is impactful, if even for a moment for some. At the conclusion, you're left to decide whether you will choose to side with the sheep or the goat. The sheep and the goat are purposefully and respectively placed with the sheep on the right and the goat on the left. The sheep brightly lit, the goat placed in the dark among a red stained wall. It is a parable biblical reference to separate the sheep from the goats. In a sarcastic and facetious undertone, there is a small sign stating "it's not that serious -it's only your future". The sheep and goat are symbolic. Choose the sheep, you choose compassion and eternal life, hence the sheep is white and a light is illuminating it. Choose the goat, and you choose eternal judgment because of your choice to be stubborn, evil, & destructive. It's a powerful statement. This experience is deeper than it looks! Perhaps the gentleman, who happens to be the lead of this project wasn't acting after all? Maybe we are all part of the Garbage Town community, but we have not realized it? You might want to pause for some self reflection. Final take, it's a $10 experience that is in actuality, invaluable.

It was not a problem getting us in to paint some items. We had an impromptu date here, and I would also say that this was one of the nicer ways to spend a Saturday afternoon that we had found. The process is pretty simple. Check in with the front desk they have you pick out a piece too please assign a table and then explain the process of how to wait on Keys to get the best result. They take care of everything after you are done applying the number of coats that you want on your item and you return after a few days to pick up. It's very simple and you can take your time. There were a mix of adults and groups that involve children, but this is not a place that I would bring very young children unsupervised or without high-level supervision. Price pay on most of the pieces to paint is around $30 and up. You can do a smaller item like an ornament for much less but people play a coffee mug about $20-$30 for what took us several hours to complete and it was very enjoyable time. Parking is available if you go around the block there is parking behind the "house". There's also street parking available on the side streets if that is filled. .

They have so many options for kids including coin banks, mine craft, Legos, animals, and more. To my surprise my hyperactive boys were obsessed and worked for almost two hours straight and are already asking to go back. A perfect Friday night!

This place features 72 artists who are mostly from the state of Virginia! There are hot sauces, felt kits, jewelry, accessories, candles, sprays, limited edition prints, and much more, where most items are handmade! The most wonderful thing is that there are over 35 different charities featured, where a certain percentage of your purchase goes to one - how neat is that?! The felt bouquet of flowers caught my eye from their display, so I knew I had to stop in! Ms. Jodie was present (@whataphotoholic), who was working on some calligraphy masterpieces; she was just super welcoming and friendly! Such a relaxed atmosphere where you can literally peruse at your leisure and have a pleasurable shopping experience! Don't forget to wander towards the back - you can see some of the featured artists' studios, where you can scope out works that are in progress and finished works on display. I was fortunate to stop by when one of the resident artists, Anjenette Renae, had her opening, 'Everyday Objects'! Really LOVED the 'Juicy Fruit' and the 'A Box of O's' paintings! I bought two handmade soaps for my collection - the Black Sea and the Black Raspberry Vanilla ones - they both smell absolutely DIVINE!!! I absolutely enjoyed my visit and look forward to many more when the hubs and I are in town! Located right around from Smoothie Mania on the 2nd floor, by Dillard's. +super friendly and welcoming staff! +featured local/resident artists and crafts! +various charities supported! +studios and gallery in the rear +located right around from Smoothie Mania on the 2nd floor

This store is not "busy" by any stretch so I get why she was scrolling on her phone. However, I feel like she glared at me, then ignored me because of my race, not because she was busy reading Yelp.
