WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!…read more I had a new unit installed by Southland just 13 months ago for an apartment. I chose them because I wanted a reputable company with years of local experience. Last month, the unit started blowing barely cool air. A technician came out and said there was a refrigerant leak, quoting me $500 for a dye test and $100 per pound of coolant -- for a total of $1,300-$2,000. He apologized and implied it was likely a manufacturer defect. This was the unit they recommended -- not a budget model, but supposedly a reliable one. Friends of mine familiar with HVAC work told me that a major refrigerant leak this soon is usually the result of a poor installation, not the equipment itself. When I called to raise this with the company, they just put me back in touch with the same technician, who repeated his earlier explanation. I asked to speak with a supervisor, and they sent a senior technician. He found the leak in the condenser coil immediately -- without a dye test. So why was I told I "needed" a $1,600 dye test in the first place? Now, the repair estimate is $3,000 for a unit that's barely over a year old. I asked for a call back from the office to discuss next steps -- no one called me back. At this point, it's clear to me that Southland is more focused on charging customers as much as possible than on standing behind their work. To make matters worse, when I pressed them about the issue, they told me the company was under "new management" and that my install was done by the "old business" -- yet my invoice from 13 months ago says Southland, their text messages say Southland, their website says Southland. They repeatedly tried to use this as an excuse, as if the problem wasn't their responsibility. I originally chose Southland because of their history as a local small business. I've since learned they were bought by an equity firm that seems more interested in profits than in doing right by customers. If you're looking for an HVAC contractor, find someone local who will take ownership of their work. Avoid this company.

Approximately 4 years ago, I asked them and another company for pricing on a new system. I went with the other company/different brand, based on the stats for quietness and also, the stainless steel furnace. Meanwhile, I kept using Southland for regular maintenance on our second system, a package unit. We requested a quote on a new package unit last January, with every intention of buying from this business. After a few follow-up calls, we're still waiting for the quote. I wanted to support a local business. I have since found a reputable local family-owned business that we will buy from, but the experience with Southland was very disheartening.

I went with…read moreCalloway & Sons solely based on their positive Yelp reviews as my friends really didn't have anyone to recommend. I'm not going to lie: getting this system installed in a home we were living in at the time was not a pleasure and I won't ever go through it again. We had to get the duct work done which is a horrifying mess (there's no way around it) and to Calloway & Son's credit, they did suggest we go with a split system. Live and learn. We also thought we were getting a system with zones which didn't happen and it was never fully explained why, but in these old homes with impossibly high ceilings and two levels, your bills are going to be extremely high if you have one single unit. It is what it is. I certainly don't blame them for that! But on to the most important stuff: the system is pretty good. Again, old house, not the greatest insulation and taking all that into consideration we are comfortable 80% of the year. The other 20% of times are where things are a less than awesome: this year's blizzard and any extremely cold days mean for a very hot upstairs, requiring us to run the window AC unit. And on those blistering hot summer days, there's no way we're comfortable upstairs without the window unit. Again, my house... it's ancient. It wasn't made for these types of systems. Last summer, there was a day in August when the system stopped working on a Friday. I was more than a little disappointed when I was told they couldn't give us a service visit unit until Monday. If you live here, you know it is literally unbearable to not have AC on a summer day. Luckily the very kind lady on the phone worked with us and fit us in. I also now pay for insurance that ensures priority service. I was only able to afford to get the HVAC on the owner's side of my two family house done and that was about 25K. The financing was not great... if I hadn't paid it off ASAP, it would have been almost double that. So try to pay it all upfront if possible. At least the option is there if you need it.

He discovered that one of the duct ties had come loose and he attached it. He explained how the tie and duct came loose and the entire process. I'm a bit more knowledgeable now!
