It combines the pharmaceutical element with the top-end makeup counters, as well as offering toiletries and the like at very reasonable prices. The pharmacy has been home to Smashbox makeover days, which was particularly exciting as this makeup brand has only newly come to Belfast. Urban specialises in Vichy, Decleor, Clarins, La Roche and the like, as well as Nuxe skincare range, which is apparently highly sought after. However, despite these high quality makeup brands being one of the main features of Urban Pharmacy, the rest of the prices really are very decent. I spotted Sally Hansen's 'Airbrush Legs' for a mere £7.95, and managed to pick up a really good quality body buffer for 99p. Excellent. The customer service is second to none in Urban Pharmacy. I have always been pleasantly greeted and conversed with, and have found all the staff extremely polite and helpful. Makes all the difference. Definitely one of Belfast's best pharmacies, and undoubtedly worth a visit.

I guess most people know exactly what high street giant Boots is like, so there's no point in going into too much detail about it. Despite the fact this particular Boots is a large store carrying a vast and varied stock I just don't shop here as much as I used to. This is because I prefer Superdrug own-brand products which are labelled Vegetarian, Vegan and Cruelty Free. I find it disappointing that Boots will not commit to the Leaping Bunny Program for its own-brand items. Thus, although they pay lip service to the Cruelty Free ethos and may tell the public that their products are cruelty free, Boots could be selling products worldwide in countries, such as China, where animal testing is the norm and sadly a requirement. I just won't support this nor give my money to a company which profits from cruelty outside the European Union. No amount of heavy duty marketing, loyalty card points, two for the price of one special offers, discounts or sales offers will make me think otherwise. Hence nowadays I avoid Boots as much as possible and instead shop at Superdrug or online from companies I am confident are truly Cruelty Free on a worldwide scale.

I was in the Botanic area and my first thought was 'is there a Boots around?' and then I remembered about the existence of this wee pharmacy so popped in on the off chance they'd have the sports rub I was looking for. What do you know? They did and the lovely lady working behind the counter gave me a number of different options to treat my injury. They also sell deodorants, shampoos and a small amount of beauty products. It was a lovely wee experience and a real surprise in the now quite modern student area of the city!

I've managed to pick up 99p hairbrushes (and yes, my hair is still very much intact), as well as some other bits and bobs, and have always been satisfied with my 'shopping experience'. Hmph, well not after my last visit. I needed to pop in for some Zovirax (darn cold sore), so Botanic was the pharmacy of choice. When my sister and I arrived, there was a man perched on a seat, looking distinctly unamused, a blonde lady who kept picking up another item, and two more people in front of her. I could see the pharmacist on the phone while everyone stood there in complete silence. Eerie wasn't the word. For two or three minutes, no-one dared make a sound, until the assistant came to the till and said "Who's next?". The first lady was waiting for a prescription, so the second stepped forward and had a very misanthropic conversation (if it could even be termed that) with Mr Personality (the sales assistant). After this awkward engagement, it was the blonde lady's turn, but apparently she too was waiting for a prescription, so up my sister and I went. I told Mr Personality that I was looking for something for cold sores, like Bonjela. He gave the weirdest look and told me that Bonjela was for ulcers. I expected him to give me an alternative, but he didn't seem to have a clue, and started flapping around, asking the pharmacist (with phone glued to ear) where the cold sore creams were. I had spotted Zovirax whilst he was dandering around, thankfully, so I took that. £6.19 for a teeny tiny tube too. Dear heavens. By this stage, I just wanted to get out of the pharmacy, so I bought it, flung it in my bag, and hoped that the next shop I ventured into would have a vastly improved customer service to what I had just experienced. Three stars, purely because yesterday was a one-off...I hope.

And now the world knows. Ah well. I fear I'm going to have to rely on my trusty list method to relay to you why I love Horner's so. It just makes life that little bit easier. So, here we go... 1) This is an extra special pharmacy. Actually. It has a lovely gift section, with cards, jewellery and fancy toiletries. And Yankee Candles. Oooh baby. Which leads me to my next point... 2) It has Yankee Candles! Ok, ok...they're really, really cheap Yankee Candles. I picked up a couple of brand new scented tarts / melts (whatever you want to call them) for a mere 90p. This still excites me greatly, so I'm going to pause for a minute to compose myself... 3) Ok, I'm good to go. It's not just those Yankee Candles that are super cheap [breathes] - pretty much everything in the shop is excellently priced. My fave deodorant was £1.00, I got the delicious Radox Smoothie shower gel for £1.25 (half price), and to be fair, I probably could have bought an awful lot more. But I didn't. Self-control was exercised. 4) The staff were lovely, like really, really cheerful and pleasant. Thumbs up for them. I probably could go, but I won't. I'll just leave you experience Horner's for yourself. Aren't I nice?

But after having put up with a particularly poor experience, going forward I'll not be visiting again. Earlier this Oct 2019, I thought I had lost a ring and was really anxious about having dropped it without realising it. On a particularly grey, crappy rainy Saturday morning, I felt so desperate about finding it that I decided I'd retrace my steps as far as I could remember, and stepped outside into the rain to do it. I walked slowly and was scanning the ground and pavements frantically, half hopeful and half disheartened. I eventually made my way up past this chemist and I decided to step inside and ask whether someone had maybe turned it in to them as a lost-and-found. More desperate then anything, I stepped inside drenched, dripping wet in a black raincoat with the hood over my head, in soaked trackies and trainers. There were some people waiting their turn at the counter and in front of me there was a tall security guard with a shaved head and goatee. I stepped toward him just as an older man, a local, walked up to him and said hello and started chatting. I walked up and stood in front of them - I was very conspicuous by my dodgy appearance, and tried to make eye contact to get the security guard to acknowledge me so I didn't interrupt their conversation. He did see me, but he just blanked me and ignored me. I stood there and noticed it, and shifted in place making it obvious I was there to ask something, but he just kept ignoring me and tried to pretend I wasn't there. He made small talk with the old man and I became conscious right away he must think I'm some random strange person wanting something or up to trouble. After what seemed like maybe 5-6 minutes of awkward standing, I just gave up and went closer to the counter and after a few moments a girl at the counter asked if she could help me. I sighed in relief and exasperation, and I explained about the ring and that I was hopeful someone may have turned it in. I purposely spoke in my best, polite American accent with a clear loud voice so that the security guard could hear me and become aware I wasn't some vagrant. The girl was sympathetic, offered to take my contact details in case someone did turn it in, and then I thanked her and stepped back towards the main door to go out and continue my search outside. That experience made me feel very self conscious and I felt that security guard went out of his way to ignore me like he did. I normally wouldn't be bothered about something like this but on this occasion I was really anxious about finding that ring and I was really just wanting a bit of help, but to be straight-up ignored was just not cool at all. If this chemist reads this review and just shrug it off, then that's fine and it won't matter a jot to me now. But that experience really left a distinctly uncomfortable and kinda humiliating mark in my memory. I'm happy enough to make the longer journey into the town centre and even all the way to the Marshes than go back to this place. I did eventually find my ring, and by that stage I'd firmly decided that would be my last visit to Castletown Pharmacy.
