Any portfolio under $500,000 must absolutely be invested in mutual funds to get proper diversification. At 0.8 of 1%, Manchester's fees are very low, and the average portfolio is NOT entirely invested in no load mutual funds; rather, the average retirement portfolio will include a proper balancing of REIT, bonds (or, because are so incredibly low right now, other income securities), and stocks. Likely, the stock portion of a smaller portfolio is invested in common stock for growth, and is too small for picking stocks because of the risk. Services have included sophisticated analyses of our financial needs and devising a portfolio that will both produce adequate income and protect us from running out of money before the last of us dies.
