Why the land was never transferred from the Parish to the City is a good question. Who knows how all that works. Initially the playground area was kinda lame. Tiny. Little kid centered with not much variety. Upon further inspection the park has a dog park, concrete walking trails and a small water play area. The water play area was great. It was tiny as well but a lot of fun for the kids on a hot day. I found their suits but had to sacrifice a shirt as a towel. Great little spot. Looks to be brand new and the first phase of development. I would expect this park to grow exponentially in the upcoming years. Great spot to burn a couple yrs.

At all times, even if it's the middle of summer and there hasn't been rain for a week, there are three large, green, smelly mud pits that are never filled or attended to by staff. These holes with standing water are a health hazard (bacteria, mosquitoes and such) but also a nuisance for dog owners to keep their dogs out of. There is no shade and only a few patches of grass. In addition, the wash facilities for the dogs are kept turned off. There are hoses there but no way for us to use them. I've seen many patrons now brining their own "keys" (purchased from the hardware store) to turn the hose on. Some dog owners will routinely use the adjoining baseball field for their dogs, as it's well maintained with cut grass and no standing water puddles. It's a shame that the neighborhood had to wait so long for a park that is so terribly maintained. There are no other off-leash parks anywhere close which encourages dog owners to use "illegal" spaces for their pets such as open parks and baseball fields. I've been hassled by police for doing this, even with a fixed, registered and well behaved dog. The efforts that the city puts into bullying/ticketing dog owners who use those illegal spaces is useless if they fail to provide decent and legal off-leash parks for our use.

This is a great spot to watch the river float by and to play on a jungle gym or to watch kids play sports (soccer, baseball, etc). Sunday nights are cruise night so don't get caught in the traffic. Also, I've heard reports that they may close access down for months to work on the levees.

The boardwalk stretches for a little less than a 1/2 of a mile with several places for viewing both inside the loop and out on the lake. You can also climb the tower to look in 360° and get that birds eye view. Pro tip: sunset is an amazing time to visit. Parking is easy, restrooms are available, and the signage tells you exactly what to look for. Great civic restoration and a super nice place to visit.!

Torres Park is located right behind the St Bernard Parish Gov't offices on Judge Perez and butts up…read moreto Wal-Mart's east side. The park is about the size of a city block and has a little something for everyone. The park made a lot of upgrades a few years back and is in the middle of more upgrades at the time of me writing this. On the SE corner was a large wooden castle like playground for the kids to play. It's been torn down recently to be replaced with a newer plastic model that won't suffer the wear and tear as easily as it's wooden predecessor. There is also a few slides, swings and picnic tables as well. They also have a small amphitheater that I'm guessing is for plays for the kids but I've never seen it used. As you walk west there is a faux rock like structure that was meant to have a waterfall like fountain but it was drained soon after it's being built. Not sure why. There is also some rope/netting like bridge kind of like Monkey Hill at Audubon Zoo to play on. There are also a lot of construction in this area for a new skate park and a outdoor fitness center. As you make your way North you will come to a small playground on the NW corner and a pretty gazebo overlooking the park's pond. Keep walking and you'll come to small little building that has snacks and paddle boats to rent for a decent price. On the NE corner is where everyone goes to feed the ducks and nutria. Yes the nutria hang with the ducks and I've actually seen a domesticated turkey hang out here before lol. The park has a lot of trees, open fields and a bridge to a small island in the middle. It's truly a great park and will be even nicer once the improvements are made. The sidewalk around the park is about 3/4 of mile long and you'll see people walking this route for exercise daily. My only issue with this park is the trash. There is regularly trash on the ground and I don't think it's necessarily from people being jackasses. The trashcans have no lids so trash blows out and animals pull it out. Seems like the Parish should invest in the trashcans that you see at National Parks that are animal proof to cut back on the litter. Other than that this place is a true gem in Da Parish.

It is big, with lots of green area for long walks, but the best thing is the skate park with fitness area right next to it. So, parents can work out on the fitness machines while the kids hone their skateboard skills. (The opposite of the uptight Crescent Park, which doesn't even allow skateboards!) It's a very short drive, shorter than the Marigny to the Lower Garden; a nice getaway from the city.

Since many of the people who live in the area do not have a ton of yardspace, many make this their defacto front yard which is fun to observe and not crash (unless invited of course). Well, I'd probably give it four if I... A) Lived in the Lower Garden District B) Had a dog. C) All of the above. So, yeah, there's a fountain (who knew?) that looks really scummy and smells like wet dog when you're up close, but that's probably not a big deal if you have a dog. Even less so if you have a dog who loves water and are looking for places to let your puppyface swim. Because there were definitely dogs swimming in the fountain. It has your average number of sketchy and/or homeless looking people, but not all sprawled out on the ground, sleeping, like I've seen on weekday afternoons in Lafayette Square. Also, it apparently closes - there's a sign that says the park is closed from 10:30 pm to 6:00 am (interesting that they give you the closing time first, rather than the usual open/close times). Since I didn't realize it was such a big park, I also didn't realize it had official hours. You learn something new every day.
