Even if you don't fly fish (the pond has native brook trout), Tim Pond is a nice spot to relax. The owners and staff are welcoming and helpful, the cabins are rustic but really charming, and there's a lot of natural beauty and wildlife to take in while you're there, whether you're out on the pond, walking some trails, or sitting in a rocking chair on the porch. This year I went up for the fly fishing school taught by Bonnie Holding, who is, among other things, a Master Maine Guide and extremely patient instructor. I had been doubtful about it at first (I went with my boyfriend), but by the end of the weekend I was yanking fish out of that pond just like a pro. If I'd kept any of the fish, the kitchen would have prepared them for me for breakfast the following morning, but I let them all go. Maybe next time. Speaking of food, the freshly-prepared meals are de-LICIOUS (Saturday night: choice of prime rib or scallop-stuffed haddock) and always include a mouth-watering dessert if you've got room (the brownie pudding was in-CREDIBLE!!). (And really, who doesn't make room for dessert? Silly people, that's who.) And then there's the cookie jar, which is always well-stocked and accessible whenEVER you want a fresh chocolate chip cookie. Yum. Each cabin has a bathroom with hot and cold running water (with a toilet, sink & shower), beds with fresh linens, a wood stove (or fireplace), and a cribbage board for just in case. I saw pictures in the library taken in the early 1900s that suggest that some of the cabins may be original to that time period. Definitely adds to the character of the camp, as does the kerosene lantern you can use when the generator shuts off at 10:00 and you're in the middle of a "best-out-of-three" cribbage match. (No, I didn't win.) If you're looking for swank, this isn't it. But if you're looking to unplug, relax, and enjoy some good meals with good people, Tim Pond is the place to go. :)

I am an avid fly fisherman; I have been traveling and staying at Maine traditional sporting camps…read morefor over 40 years. I have stayed at well over 15 lodges throughout Maine. I have had many wonderful experiences at these camps and I have never had a bad experience with respect to hospitality or ownership ...........that changed at Grant's Camp with owner John Blunt. Grant's is located on Kennebago Lake in the Rangeley area. It is truly a "traditional Maine Sporting Camp". It has approximately 15 cabins with wonderful porches and wonderful views of the Kennebago Lake and offers terrific fishing on the Kennebago River. The cabins are cozy, the main dining room is delightful, and the office/lodge is equally impressive. This September I traveled to Grants Camps for the 3rd year in a row to meet up with a group of friends that were staying at the lodge. I believe it was their 4th time at the lodge. During my last 2 times at Grant's, I have stayed next to my friend's cabin. I do not stay with my friends as I travel with my dog and I enjoy my own cabin. Upon check-in I met the owner Mr. John Blunt for the first time. He informed me he didn't have my reservation and that after one night "he was going to 'probably move me into the cabin next door with my friends". I informed Mr. Blunt that I had a copy of my reservation which confirmed the cabin next to my friends as well as the confirmation of my dog. I also phoned the lodge confirming their confirmation. Mr. Blunt had no interest in viewing my reservation, he did not offer an apology for the mix up or an explanation. I did not agree to move into the cabin next door with my friend's as this was not a feasible option for me. Mr. Blunt "told me" to spend the night at the cabin next door and told me "something may open up". I remained hopeful. I spent the first night in my own cabin next to my friends. The following day I had lunch with my friends in the main dining room, there were also 3 other parties within the dining room. Mr Blunt approached our table. To state it went sideways at this point would be an understatement. Mr. Blunt looked at me in an intimidating and demanding tone and said "I thought I told you to move your stuff next door!". It is important to note that Mr. Blunt is a very large man. At that point I stated that I never agreed to his "demands". Next Mr. Blunt raised his voice louder and postured towards me "you're going to move next door!". My friend was able to calm this argument down for a moment only to have Mr. Blunt in a louder and more aggressive tone tell me "I am going to need to see that confirmation in my office ". It was then in my mind I was checking out - it didn't matter if Mr. Blunt could find an accommodation for me- I was certainly not going to give an owner or an establishment money for such abuse and incompetence. After lunch I went into Mr. Blunt's office and showed him my email confirmation provided by the lodge which was dated and time stamped. I could see that Mr. Blunt did not have the skill-set to find the confirmation on his computer even when I provided my email address and the date in which he sent me the confirmation. I returned to my cabin to begin my departure back to Boston. After packing I went to the office to pay for my short stay. Mr. Blunt took no responsibility for his mistake, his deplorable behavior (which was witnessed by more than 10 lodgers) and offered no apology. This was not just the worst experience I have had at a sporting camp but rather the worst experience in any hospitality business. Lastly, my one night stay without the use of a boat came to be $320 which is the highest price I have ever paid at a Maine sporting camp. Potential lodgers beware.

Contacted via social media for information, where a person helped us get a reservation for the last meal of the winter season. Arrived about 15 minutes early and were relieved to see the pub was open so we ordered a drink while we waited. So happy they could make a frozen mudslide, a drink I haven't had in many years and they made it perfectly! We sat in the waiting area and enjoyed the view of the lake before us. We arrived at our table and was greeted by our server/hostess Katie who was excellent. We reviewed the full menu, and decided to have the two specials for that evening, Prime rib and surf and turf. They have a special steak here that is available for those who want a large portion of meat, The Tomahawk, apparently very popular but too big for me. The bread was warm and the butter very tasty, a special treat. Food arrived timely with good presentation and temperature. Delicious! We had no room for dessert but will visit again and will try to save room.

Maine Trip #1…read more "Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed ... We simply need that wild country available to us, even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in." ― Wallace Stegner, The Sound of Mountain Water Androscoggin Riverlands State Park (ARSP) first came to my attention while in Maine visiting my family. I had never heard of it before, and when I did some research, I found out why. ARSP opened six years ago, but hardly anyone was using this amazing park. A year ago, they put up more trail signs in order to encourage people to visit, in the hopes that they won't be so nervous about getting lost in the 2,700 acres, 12 miles of river frontage, and 22 miles of trails. History: The Androscoggin River is the 3rd largest river in Maine, and it begins in the mountains of New Hampshire. The Native Americans camped and fished for at least 9,000 years, and they gave the river its name--meaning "plenty of fish." Thanks to riverfront industries, the Androscoggin River became one of the ten most polluted rivers in the country back in the 1960s, but thankfully, the Clean Water Act in 1972 helped water quality improved tremendously. Amenities: * Toilet (outhouse--these things are probably way better than portable toilets. Open-air and wood building makes for no odor. * Large, dirt parking lot * No fee * ATV riding * Canoeing * Cross-country skiing * Fishing * Hiking (trails) * Horseback riding * Hunting (except Sundays) * Kayaking (two water landings) * Off-road biking * Picnicking * Snowmobiling * Snowshoeing * Watchable wildlife * Carry In-Carry Out * Pets welcome (on a leash at all times) * 8 old foundations show the community that existed here before 1927 I had a wonderful time hiking the Homestead Trail. It has several different terrain and lots to see. Unfortunately, I didn't know exactly how far the trail would go, so I turned around. (I now have a trail map and will post it.) At one point, I did lose cell signal so be prepared for that. Make sure you bring bug spray! I didn't see a single soul while I was on my hike, which is wonderful for me. I love the solitude and the "wilderness" at ARSP. I think you will too.
