Being new to Fly fishing we definitely needed someone to help us learn the skills needed to have a good time. My girlfriend had taken a class a couple years ago with Gerry Crow from NH River Guide Service so she contacted him again. He was very accommodating to our needs. He found out where we were and suggested a river close to us (even though that meant a 2+ hour drive for him) When we arrived he was already there with all the gear we would need. (Poles,boots, waders, etc) Once we were geared up we headed to the river. Walking above the river Gerry was pointing out the fish that we could see...wouldn't have seen them without him pointing them out. We got to a location that looked like a good spot to practice and he got us throwing out some line. Which I will admit looks easy but takes some technique. He was patient with us and got us to the point that we might actually be able to catch something. We then headed up the river a little farther and found a great spot. He was back and forth between my girlfriend and I giving us instruction and pointers and encouragement. He taught us a couple different techniques that are used for fly fishing and did all the rigging when we needed to change the flies. It was so much more enjoyable having a knowledgeable and professional guide to help us learn. We went to various spots on the river to see the different types of scenarios we would encounter and the best way to handle them. About half way thru the day we had lunch that Gerry made for us, it was all very good! Then we continued fishing for the rest of the day it was a great time. If you want to learn to fly fish I can definitely recommend Gerry Crow from NH River Guide Service. He really knows the waterways around New England and more importantly knows what you need to catch fish at that particular time and in that particular river. That is where a good guides knowledge lies and that is the key to having a great time. My son and I were fortunate to spend the day with Gerry from NH Rivers Guide Service on the Swift River in central Massachusetts in late April. The Swift is renown for its "technical" fishing with wary native brookies and some fat rainbows in slow moving, gin clear waters; 6x tippets and size 18-24 nymphs and drys. I have been flyfishing since I was 10 years old and I still learn something new almost every time I fish. With Gerry's help and guidance on these waters, I learned a lot. My fish of the day, although not the largest, was an 11 inch brookie that Gerry spotted surface feeding in a tricky current. Using Gerry's "playbook", I worked my way into the right position and with several mends was able to dead drift my size 22 Griffith's gnat right over its nose and watch it gently slurp my offering. Magnificent fish with bright colors. With Gerry's expert local knowledge and positive reinforcement we had a wonderful day. My son, who is just learning, was the "brookie king" for the day with Gerry putting him in the right places and patiently demonstrating the proper techniques. Although I doubt he would admit it, I believe Gerry actually prefers working with novices who have yet to develop any bad habits! I have fished all over the US and in several countries and have used dozens of guide services over the years. Connected with David online to set up a day of fly fishing for trout up in the Franconia Notch area. He was very attentive to my emails, always promptly responding, very polite in our communications leading up to the day. I scheduled a 1/2 day excursion with my teenage daughter and mother. None of us had ever fly fished before. We got to the meeting location early and he was already there. He got us set up with the gear and headed to a nearby lake to get started with the instruction. He was very patient, easy to understand with regards to walking us through the casting techniques. Each of us had a different learning style and he was great at working with each of us to accommodate for our speed. We really appreciated his knowledge, ability to simplify the process and go at our pace. As the morning progressed, we started hitting up a few different spots on the lake and in the area. He was mindful and paid attention to my mom in particular, making sure she was comfortable and safe, even during a small river crossing. Attention to safety throughout the day was amazing. Overall, couldn't have been happier with our experience with David all day. Great guide with an abundance of local knowledge. Highly recommend! read more

My neighbor and fishing buddy, Max has fished with Gerry several times before. This year, I joined Max on a trip to Errol to see what NH Rivers Guide Service is all about. It's about great fishing and great food!. I'm used to thrashing the water on my own, but Gerry was there to always point me to a likely spot and really pampered me by handing me another rod to use while he fixed my tippet or tied on a new set of flies to try. I had some pretty good successes including at least one of pretty much everyting - Brookie, Rainbow, Brown, Salmon, and even a jumbo Fall Fish. When we were in the drift boat and Gerry wasn't there to pamper me, Dave took up the slack - replacing my leader when it parted company with my line (as it was floating away, a fish to the fly that was attache!). read more

I've done the trip to Errol with Gerry and crew for the past 8 years and still look forward to it every year. The food and accomodations are great but the main attraction is the fishing with Gerry. He knows the river inside and out and what flies work in the different areas of the river. He's patient and a great instructor. Even though I've been fly fishing for more than a few years, I always learn something new when I fish with Gerry. I also think it's great that you fish a 1/2 day wading and a 1/2 day in the drift boat. Dave handles the drift boat and knows the river well. He always seems to put us onto fish. Being relatively new to the sport, I lacked the confidence & skill to go out on my own. A day and a half with Gerry and the crew left me feeling confident and secure in my newfound abilities. The ultimate reward was a 16 inch brook trout my first evening! Apparently there are few this size per season, and I caught one on my first night there under Gerry's excellent guidance & tutelage. I've been with Gerry, Dave and his staff on many trips to fish the Androscoggin and the surrounding native trout ponds and have enjoyed every minute. The staff is extremely helpful the accommodations are clean and the "chef" is outstanding. The fishing is some of the best in New England..
