Last summer we rented the river chalet for a vacation getaway. It was the best break from hectic city living I've ever had. The river chalet sits on the edge of Clearwater river and there's no other human life for miles around. It's just you, the flowing river, the sky, trees and wildlife. Very serene, rustic and memorable. The chalet is an old log cabin with no phone, no television, no hot water and only a small fridge and stove. You make your own fun, and that's the best kind of all. There's a giant balcony where you can sit and watch the river rush by and laugh with the stillness and calmness inside you, like old friends. The wilderness is so restorative. You're deep in the woods and you need to watch your back for beers. We spotted one about 50 feet off on a hike, but kept our talking loud so as not to alarm it, and it just lumbered off. We went over Canada Day long weekend. The river was swelling and the mosquitos were thick. Thank god for the mosquito nets around the beds. The old, wooden structure has a few holes where the bugs get in, so we had to smoke out the place with bug repellant coils a couple of times, so you need your bug spray. There's also a 25-minute hike in from your car to the chalet. If you don't like to sweat, or get a little dirty, this isn't your type of vacation. It's not a 5-star hotel, t but it will be an experience of a lifetime. Star-gazing, waterfall hikes and waking up to the sight of a river rushing by below you are priceless. But it's only about $125 a day to rent. Split between a few people, that's a cheap holiday getaway. Almost time to book for next year! read more
