As a CWRU student, my two obvious gym options are Veale and 121. Being the broke graduate student…read morethat I am, paying $40/year for a locker sounds MUCH better to me than even the discounted rate students will get for 121 starting this fall. If you are interested in classes then 121 might be the right option. But if you're looking for a good place to workout on your own or with a friend, Veale absolutely fits the bill. The cardio room has plenty of equipment, as does the weight room. There are two pools, a track, and a rock climbing wall as well. And did I mention membership is free for CWRU students and faculty? Just swipe your card. The locker rooms have daily (free) lockers and the paid assigned lockers, as well as showers and hair dryers. They also provide towels (though don't expect soft and fluffy in this department...but they get the job done). I have to say that I am super excited for the extended hours in the fall. Also, many people don't know this but 121 will actually be managing Veale maintenance. What that means for equipment and cleanliness remains to be seen, but I'm certain it will be positive. Overall, if you don't need a "cool" fancy gym and just want a good place to workout, Veale is a great option. I should also say that I workout in the weight room three mornings a week and never feel uncomfortable at all. I've been to gyms where the guys don't always respect the gals who are working out at the same time. Not so here. The athletes, army dudes, and everyday gym junkies have always been nothing but polite. Way to round out a positive review. EDIT: So, 121 is now managing Veale and there are some pretty nice changes going on, i.e. love that they got rid of the yucky drop ceiling in the weight room! Looking forward to seeing all of the changes as they shape up.

I opted in, and was pleasantly surprised at the history and the way the original artifacts were preserved when possible. The building was otherwise very modern. We were able to see the indoor rowing room, the storage for boats, the Big House and a room believed to be a speakeasy a long time ago. They do summer camps for youth and also a great deal of outreach in the community to let people know about their rowing and sailing programs. Companies can rent out space for events or do team building in the indoor state of the art simulation rowing room. The Cleveland sign out back was a pleasant surprise also. Come visit! You won't be disappointed.

Liberty Playground in Elmwood Park is so nice for children! All was cleaned and there was only two…read moremissing items to utilize the park fully. People were socially distanced at the park. The bathrooms were available near by however we didn't use them. There is a bicycle park as well for children called safety town. There were various slides; zip line, rock climbing and swings!

The city of Independence, Ohio has a lot going for it but their Elmwood park simply outshines parks…read moreof neighboring areas. The crown jewel being their Liberty Playground which is great for toddlers to preteens. It has a generous section for a mini-town, complete with is fire station, traffic light, pedestrian crossing etc. Of note, clean restrooms by the kids area enhances the experience. The soccer field is gorgeous....and well maintained. Tennis courts are fantastic....and well maintained. Excellent baseball fields, multiple....are well maintained. Swimming pool for kids and adults....look great although I haven't benefited from it. The walking areas connecting all the above to independence branch of Cuyahoga County Public Library are paved with lush green grass and colorful floral arrangements with a lot of attention owing laid to landscaping. The Elmwood pond within the grounds of the park is a serene place to sit by. I've had the pleasure of visiting there many times with family, a generation up and also a generation down. We all love sitting there, chatting, snacking,in a peaceful environment in awe of the ducks, geese and if we're lucky, seeing the blue herons that come by there.

Sokol is a Czech community center located in…read more Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood. It is located inside the Bohemian National Hall. So, you'll hear Sokol and Bohemian National Hall being used interchangeably. I visited Sokol for ethnic events on multiple occasions. Most recently I participated in the Annual Czech Holiday Fair. AMBIANCE: Sokol Building is the white building directly next to the Bohemian National Hall. It includes few spaces including a gym and halls. The interior is grandeur, rooted in history and tradition. There are only a very few buildings in the city that feel so magnificent. There are plenty of steps to navigate the Sokol and the National Bohemian Hall. When both are open, you'll also find museum rooms and store with Czech and souvenirs. HOLIDAY FAIR: The holiday fair was very interesting especially due to my own Slavic roots. There were multiple rooms with cultural elements, food, and drinks. The rooms were not very filled but could house many guests. The navigation of everything that was available was quite confusing. I had no idea that there was a basement level with food until talking to one of the vendors. Guests could also freely checkout the museum and the store. While I'm not Czech, I really appreciate the abundance of folk elements at the fair. There were plenty of vendors selling straw dolls, Czech souvenirs, plates, vintage ornaments, books, crotchet goodies, cookbooks, postcards, and more. The prices were fairly reasonable and there a lot of unique pieces. I am trying to declutter, and so instead I became very interested in food options. There were plenty of hearty meals including Duck Quarter Dinner ($16) and Chicken Paprikash Dinner ($16). I purchased Chicken Paprikash Dinner (comes with Czech dumplings), frozen Czech bread dumplings (Houskové knedlíky), and Kuba (grain dish with barley). I was most exited about trying Czech dumplings. They do not resemble dumplings at all. They are more like breads that soak in all the tasty juices from the accompanying dish. Love the concept! Plenty of Czech bottle beers were available at really reasonable prices - $4-5. NEIGHBORHOOD: Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood, one thriving Slavic area, is currently a pretty bad neighborhood in the city. I always feel uneasy visiting this area. Two parkings lots affixed to Sokol have guards which puts you at ease. I really enjoyed my experience at a holiday event at Sokol. There was plenty to eat and sightsee. I look forward to attending Mikuláša (Saint Nick's Dance) soon! You should find events to attend at Sokol too, look at their Facebook for the latest event offerings.

It's next to impossible to find info about the Lewis Road Arena (part of the Cleve Metroparks)…read more I'd been riding for over a year less than a mile down the road and I didn't even know it existed. When I did find out...wow! It's connected to the bridle paths and the arena is accessible year long. The arena is well drug and actually stays quite dry after a rainfall. There is a small picnic area used for an announcers booth. Several small shows are held there, including Angels Haven Horse Rescue and Hope Horse Rescue shows. Worth checking out for all my equestrian buddies! Good show grounds! (hopefully by throwing this on Yelp it will make it more googlable...shesh!)

This review is for Reagan Park's 11 miles of mountain bike trails…read more This park has a combined total of five trails. See the website to see all the trails marked on a map. All of the trails are challenging! I would say front a suspension mountain bike is a must, and having a rear suspension would make these trails a little easier. I have seen people riding these trails with no suspension. Roughnecks! The first trail, Huffman Trail, is a low to medium difficulty trail. Though, it is much harder than most the other mountain bike trails in northeast Ohio, based on the little bit of biking I've done in the last few years in the Cleveland Metroparks. To me, the climb is probably the toughest part. This trail will challenge you both physically and technically. It starts off flat, but then there is a long climb that will get your heart going. Most of the technical stuff is on the way down. There are several rock gardens and sharp drops that will test your balance. The second trail, is the Fawn Ridge trail, which connects to the Annex trail, which connects to the River Trail, but for my reviews purposes, I'm treating them as one trail because, well, it feels like one trail when you ride it. Fawn Ridge and Annex are not that long or difficult and there is one section where you actually have to ride along the road to get to the next section. Basically, this is the trail you ride to get to the difficult River Trail section. The River Trail section is really challenging. There is a very steep, downhill rock garden with small logs that cross the path. It's very bumpy and hard to ride without losing your balance, while maintaining the right speed. It's tough to brake because your rear tire is bouncing off the logs and rocks, if you have no rear suspension like me. You don't want to give too much front brake because you don't want to fly over the handlebars. Out of approximately five attempts at this obstacle, I've only made it past it once without falling and that was during my first attempt! This trail circles back to the Annex Trail, where you will cross the street to the Reagan Park Trail. The Reagan Park Trail is a large, difficult trail with some interesting obstacles. Lots of climbs and narrow single track. But there is a nice section that is a gradual decline through a pine forest. Very cool! There is a section where you have to cross a creek, and yet another section that has a 10 foot drop that is extremely steep and makes a 90 degree right turn at the bottom. I usually just drag my rear wheel down this part and steer through the sharp turn. When you ride all three trails, it will get you in shape quickly. You will need lots of water, preferably a Camel Back to keep you hydrated. There is also an RC car track, which is cool to stop and watch people using while you catch your breath.

This is where you can you get right next to the Dorothy Ann, Listen to a concert at Jacob's Pavillion, See the blimp on game days, Race your fellow rowers for fun on regatta days, and feel the sunshine getting some good exercise after work rowing the cuyahoga it's not always easy, but it's an experience!

So, I rowed way back in high school and when I moved to Cleveland last summer I thought I might…read morewant to take it up again. Well, things got a little busy and before I knew it I was bogged down with work and school. Thanks to Cara for posting up the Learn to Row info up on Yelp and giving me that little extra push to head down there now that I have more time. The LTR program goes over one day (about 7:30 - 2) and covers everything beginners need to know about rowing on the river in Cleveland (and it also reminds a few of us who have done it before of things we may have forgotten). A little bit of a classroom session with Erik and then down for a boathouse tour and some work on the erg's before hitting the water. The boathouse is beautiful.....and they just moved in a little while ago after the old boathouse burned down. They have a lot of room here and are working hard to improve the area and make it into a Riverfront Park that everyone can enjoy. Lots of room for boats (so many places row out of here: high schools, colleges and universities along with the master rowers and private members). The only thing that I wish the boathouse had, is a nice indoor rowing tank, then it would be complete! For the rest of the day, you'll be out on the water in your 8 with a couple of experienced rowers and a coxswain along with your coach alongside in the launch. They'll teach you everything basic about getting the boat in and out of the water and the fundamentals of the stroke.....and how not to get run over or swamped by the 7-story high ships that come down the Cuyahoga! After such a fantastic day out on the water, I knew I had to sign up for the rest of the summer....these people are fantastic, in reality, it seems more like the Hash House Harriers...they're a "social club with a rowing problem". The group camaraderie was so amazing that I even convinced a fellow Yelper to join up with me too....and I anticipate an excellent summer out on the water! They still have two more Learn to Row programs before the summer rowing league starts up so come on out and give it a try ;o)
