the door to the first national bank

This was stop #3 on the day of wine tasting for my friend's birthday. It hadn't been going so great so far, but the staff here were wonderful! They were friendly, knowledgeable, personable, and completely lovely. They turned our day around! They made great recommendations based on what we were doing later that night and the next day: 1. Miss Hannah's Gourmet Popcorn (for us to take to the drive-In movie later), 2. Brooks in Amity, 3. San Francisco in Wilsonville, 4. Mexican Restaurant for dinner. They were very friendly. And the main reason that I gave as many stars as I did. The other great thing is that the building was built in 1910 as First National Bank. It still has the original vaults and hard wood flooring. It was quite wonderful. However, of the wines they offer, there was only one that I thought was even worth our time to taste. It was good enough that I bought a bottle, but the rest we just dumped.

Yesterday I dropped by the tasting room while walking to the grocery store. I make a point to drop in and say hello to new businesses in my neighborhood. Wine tasting at 2:30pm on a Thursday? Welcome to my happy little life in Oregon wine country. First off the building is gorgeous, it was initially a bank, most recently it was a law office and people have left their touches over time. I love the decor in here and it is spacious, which is a bonus since many tasting rooms that are in storefronts can be a touch cramped. I chatted with JoJo- a quick online search states she is the Tasting Room Manager and takes care of wine club members- this does not surprise me... she is awesome! The tasting room was in Carlton for 5 years and just moved to Newberg. She gave me a tour and there are two vaults! So cool! They grow their grapes in Southern Oregon and do not make Pinot, they do however make big tasty reds. One thing I noticed right away is that they were pouring older vintages, which I appreciate. I enjoyed my tasting and bought a bottle of 2007 Cliff Creek Cabernet Franc. I even pre paid for the admission to the 1st annual Newberg Seafood & Wine Festival. I had a chat with my husband about this winery and I am excited to bring him back (probably for first Friday Artwalk tonight). Do I *really* need another wine club membership? Probably not, however if Matt likes the wine as much as I do- I don't mind if I do. Oh one more plus- they are dog friendly, yay! And the sweetest little Wire Hair Terrier Lulu Lemon is the shop dog. She is usually only there on weekdays, she was sooooo sweet and friendly, I love it when businesses have a four legged greeter. They are open 7 days a week.

I enjoy Oregon Pinot noir but the selection of southern Oregon reds was a fresh and delicious surprise.

Wines served had variety, dinner was delicious. We ended up signing up for their wine club since it's got fun perks: multiple vineyards, wineries, and tastings included.

Flash forward a year or so ago, when they were having an event in late winter with complimentary tastings. Since then, I am there every few weeks. I joined the Chehalem Winery club and lucky for me, this is part of my membership!!! Sam, is the Tasting Room Manager and is kind to everyone who enters into the former car garage. There is a food cart on site and the menu has been updated by a new chef, you won't be disappointed. I'm not a big games person, but you will see me and my ladies down for Bingo the first Thursday of the month! Have I mentioned the music? The best musicians in Oregon Wine Country are there every Friday and Saturday evenings and with that comes many of their groupies. Other events include, trivia night and Song writers Show case as well as line dancing.

I have been in the wine club for about 6 months. I'm very particular on where my wine dollars go…read more I discovered their wine where it was the Chehalem tasting room in downtown Newberg. Its new location is off of Bell Road in Sherwood and it's worth the drive to catch amazing views of Mt. Hood. Now the facts. The staff at this winery is the best in field. Once you enter the absolutely stunning room, you are greeted by the engaging servers. I have never felt like being a part of the Cool Kids club, and that's the feeling I get. Everyone knows you by name and I even received a personalized note from my server when I broke down and joined the club. The food prepared by Chef Brent is so yummy. Don't pass up the chocolate cookies, a fantastic pairing with the Ridgecrest Pinot. Great wine, food, fun people and right off of 99. I would say, make this your next stop when wine tasting, but you might never leave.

We scheduled a tasting for 10a as their main event person happened to be getting married and we were glad they were able to accommodate us. Wine for Breakfast? Heck, it WAS 1p EDT so it worked out. Their tasting room wasn't necessarily elegant, but the glasses were all set up for us and we began promptly. It was a rainy morning and we did get to walk through one of the vineyards, eat some grapes from the vine, and hear about Chehalem. We also toured the winery with the tanks and workers being friendly and doing their thing as it was time to make the wine. The tasting was done very well and what was very interesting was we tried the same Chardonnay from a narrow glass and a wide glass and they tasted completely different. Who would have thunk it? The science of wine! We joined the club (they waive the tasting fees if you join) and our box just arrived (they ship to FL later so the heat doesn't ruin the wine), which made me write the review. I wish I knew about that before the great quarantine of 2020. Anyway, what an excellent experience from our host at Chehalem. They also have a tasting room in Downtown Newberg by the food trucks where the road splits. If we ever go back (we want to), we may stop to see what's new.
