It's a family run business, a polish family owns it and they live upstairs. Communication might be a bit difficult and the service was a bit slow, but the food was good, the drinks were just what we needed and we didn't have to wait 2 hours at the Boston pizza to be seated. There were some bees and flies out on the patio that were bothersome, but hey it's Muskoka! One of the women who worked there brought out water and pieces of turkey out for our pup to enjoy, which was really nice of her. We ordered the almond pastry, a few beers, the polish sausage, pierogies and a cappuccino. All were great. I'm glad to see their scrambled eggs are made with real eggs and not the boxed liquid ones; I could tell from the telltale flecks of white mixed in with the yolk and denser texture. Their bacon was also tasty: crispy, not too salty, and had a nice smoky flavour. If anything, the home fries could use more time on the flat top to develop a crispier crust, but they were still decent and would pair nicely with fried eggs to create a soft hash. I was excited to see the lovely caramelization on the house pancakes ($9.95 for three) but it didn't really translate into flavour. As pancakes go, they're nice and fluffy but also store-bought tasting, especially when served with packaged table syrup. Bethune's plain house burger ($9.95) reminded me of the ones I had in high school at Johnny Andersons. The beef patty is thicker than McDonalds, but also seems to be mixed with flour as it has a softer consistency. Still, it had a nice crust, and was adorned with all the classic fixings: mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The French fries are also a step up from the home fries - crispy, hot, and made with real potatoes. The low prices may partially be attributed to Bethune's lean (but not mean) staff. Even on weekends there's usually only one person out front and presumably one chef. Yet, service was efficient, and I've always felt taken care of and welcomed. If you're in Gravenhurst, I'd recommend skipping fast food and support local at Bethune's Bistro instead. While it's more aptly described as a diner or family-style restaurant (as opposed to a bistro), there's a friendly small-town charm to the place and you won't leave broke or hungry.

Perfect lake community with beautiful buildings and surroundings. We stopped here for a coffee before heading to our cottage on the lake for the weekend. This shop is very clean and inviting. She then carefully went over the different types of Tequila I could choose from which included Patron my personal favourite. She then created the best Margarita Ive ever had. My brother and his wife had Gin and Tonics created with the same care and flair as were the Virgin Ceasars ordered by our friends. We then were moved to our table and were warmly welcomed by our charming Kiwi waitress who had a wonderful sense of humour and provided terrific attentive service throughout our meal. Now for the food...I chose the Mulligatawny soup which was delicious and the Prime Rib which came with roast potatoes perfect Yorkshire pudding and a medley of beautifully cooked fresh vegetables which even included parsnips which as a transplanted Brit I thought was a creative touch... even the red wine gravy was spot on. My sister in law had The Blackened Mahi Mahi out friends both had the chicken supreme and my brother the seafood casserole. Each of these dishes was prepared with great care were creatively garnished and had generous portions... none of those tiny haute cuisine portions here.... We left stuffed but not before sampling their creme brulet which was also perfect. While outside after dinner I encountered the kitchen staff and they were equally friendly and interesting and we shared our passion for great food. Both my brother and I share a passion for great food and are no strangers to the kitchen. When guests come to our family cottage they are always delighted with our fare but once in awhile its nice to get away and let someone else do the work. Often Im disappointed when my dinner arrives has skimpy portions and I sit there thinking I could have made it better myself... theres none of that here! At the end of the day it comes down from the top as wise owners appreciate their staff and while setting high standards ensure that each staff member is treated fairly and with respect. It was apparent that each of the staff we met were happy to work there in this warm collegial environment. The final touch was that as I couldn't eat all my main course I asked our server if I could take it to go.
