The Veterans memorial has three granite blocks connected at an angle with bronze plaques that honor veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The World War II plaque is dedicated to all W W II vets and spotlights ten that were killed in action. The plaque reads "A lasting tribute to these men we loved and lost," above ten names. A second plaque inscription reads "to all our veterans who so bravely fought when our nation was in need." The Korea plaque's inscription reads" For Our Brave Men Who Could Not Come Home" . One name, Roscoe E. Perry is engraved, followed by an inscription that reads "We honor the gallant men of this town who answered the call of our great nation". The Vietnam plaque honors two local vets who were killed. The plaque's dedication reads: "God bless these men who could give no more. May we always remember -Never Forget- These courageous men from Our town who fought for Right when so much was not' The monument is in very good condition at a prominent high traffic corner in Niantic where Main Street (Route 156) and Pennsylvania Avenue (Route 161) intersect.

She died when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. This memorial, located in the Town Green of her home town, honors her memory with a simple plaque that reads: "In loving memory for the life of Dianne Bullis Snyder, Flight Attendant American Airlines Flight 11, Sept 11, 2001-February 12, 1959-September 11, 2001. To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die." I found it beautifully heartbreaking in its simplicity.

A town with a…read more history from the sea The town of Clinton, Connecticut was founded in 1663 and is located about 25 miles east of New Haven. It's one of the smallest towns in all of Connecticut in terms of size and once contain the area of Killingworth to the north. Clinton is very much still a beach town and the population of around 15,000 more than doubles in size during the summer months with the influx of tourists. Clinton's history is closely connected to the sea. Shipbuilding, fishing and tourism has long been a part of Clinton. The shipbuilding and fishing have pretty much disappeared but tourism is still the main source of income. Even though it takes only about a minute to drive from one end to the other, you will see a fair number of antique shops and nice restaurants on Main Street. One the interesting things about Clinton is the absolutely huge variety of houses. For such a small area you can find multi million dollar mansions on the beach, cool old historic houses on Main Street, modest ranches in the north and even a couple of trailer parks. It seems every single house in Clinton is different. One of the things that you won't find unless you look very hard is the water. They keep that a secret and that is one of the problems. There is a town beach but that's in the harbor but it's frequently more mud than water. The real beach is on Shore Road and that is very private. Being private is fine but most other states in New England have some public access to the water, in Connecticut it's frequently difficult to even get a glimpse of it. I lived in Clinton for 15 years and over that time I have seen many changes. The street where we lived used to be a community, we had block parties, had a little grocery store and had people walking along the beach all the time. Everyone knew each other. Now the store is gone, the social events have stopped and people have become even more possessive of the water. Walls and fences, even through illegal, extend down from the beaches into the water. No trespassing signs have appeared. Many of the smaller homes and cottages along the beach have been replaced by huge, looming and impersonal homes. Quite a few were built during the housing boom and now have for sale signs. The arrow to time moves forward, you can never go back. Places have to change and frequently the changes aren't particularly pleasant. But I still have a modicum of hope that shoreline Clinton can go back and recapture the sense of community and closeness that it once had. We shall see. I have added old postcards of Clinton many years ago instead of any contemporary photos.

Sure you have, it's OK, you can admit it here - remember this is a safe environment and a judgement free zone. Well the word dates back to 1644 and is based on the French word for chalk, whicjh happens to be "craie". Ever wonder where some of America's earliest crayons were manufactured? Well, I found the answer on the Madison Historical marker. I bet you can guess the answer now. The marker is located on Boston Post Road between Academy Street and Island Avenue. Here you'll see a 2-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The marker has the same text on both sides. The 1975 marker is in pretty good overall condition. One side is in great shape, with a fairly bright and unfaded blue background and white lettering. The other side is showing very early signs of decline with some fading on the white lettering and some discoloration on the blue background. The full text reads: This area, formerly part of Guilford and known as East Guilford, was first settled about 1650 on land bought from the Nehantic and Mohegan Indians in 1641. With population increasing, settlers here sought separate parishes and the Society of East Guilford was incorporated in 1707, the Society in North Madison, called North Bristol, in 1753. The Town of Madison, named for President James Madison, was incorporated in 1826. This was once a center for fishing, shipping, shipbuilding, farming, and crayon manufacturing. Famous people born here included Thomas Chittenden, first Governor of Vermont; philanthropist Daniel Hand; artist Gilbert Munger; and chief sponsor of the Civil War ironclad warship Monitor, Cornelius Scranton Bushnell. This is one helluva great monument in a very unexpected location…read more. Incongruously, on a strip of grass smack in the middle of downtown Milford, they appear like ghosts. What they are, in fact, are five detailed and very life-like bronze sculptures that honor the men and women who served their country during World War Two. Frozen for all time, you'll see a kneeling Marine with his rifle, a pilot with a flight helmet, goggles, and a parachute, A WAC (Women's Army Corp) dressed in a jacket, skirt, jacket, and cap, a Navy sailor wearing a life jacket, and a kneeling Army soldier with his rifle and canteen. The level of detail in the faces, uniforms, and accessories are extraordinary. The monument's simple inscription reads: DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED 1941 - 1945 WORLD WAR II The monument was dedicated in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.

Some of the earliest matches made in the US of A were also made here. The Woodbridge Historical marker from the CT Historical Commission is located on an exterior wall of the Old Center School, which now houses the police station and various town offices. You'll see the familiar white lettering on a blue background mounted high on the gable end of the brick building. The marker was dedicated in 1979 and is in pretty good condition with no signs of fading or peeling The full inscription reads: Woodbridge The town consists of portions of the colonial jurisdictions of New Haven and Milford. Founded in 1738 as the Parish of Amity, it was incorporated in 1784 by act of the Connecticut General Assembly and named after the first parish minister, the Reverend Benjamin Woodbridge, who served 1742 to 1785. The first meetinghouse was built in 1740 on the green and met the needs of the community until 1832, when it was replaced by the present building, dedicated on January 1, 1833. The early economy was largely agricultural, but there were several small factories producing such items as melodeons, corkscrews, cement, candlesticks, clocks, and spinning wheels. Some of the earliest friction matches in this country were made in Woodbridge. The decline of farming and improved transportation after 1900, together with the natural beauty and topography of the land, have contributed largely to its growth and distinction as a residential community.
