Stayed for two nights on our way out of Ireland. Really really enjoyed it. Awesome location to airport and Dublin. Great rooms, peaceful and great staff. Desk was great, restaurant was tasty, bar staff wonderful. Super clean throughout, easy parking, google maps led us straight there from Limerick. The restaurant was adaptable to our desire to have a Chartucarie plate that was just cheese. The location is super photogenic. I absolutely fell in love with this boutique hotel despite a few flaws. First, the good: After spending the bulk of our trip in B&Bs, it was a refreshing change to stay in a posh hotel outside of Dublin's city centre. I happened upon making reservations at this hotel by pure chance. Not having done my research before the trip, I had booked this blindly to secure accommodations in Dublin for our trip. Had I not been so naive in booking, I would never have discovered this gem. The rooms are incredibly modern with all the latest technologies. The common areas such as the lobby and the restaurants are very well decorated, blending medieval castle relics with modern patterns and textures. Amazing! The bad: We stayed two nights and ate three meals in the hotel. The first was the evening of our arrival. We ate in the Knights Bar. The food was excellent. I had this amazing burger with tomato relish on it. Yeah, dude, tomato relish. Never knew existing but now I am officially a fan. While the food was great, I was extremely irritated by the staff. For some reason, they spent no less than twenty minutes reorganizing the silverware. It was incredibly loud. Constant clanging that was like nails on a chalkboard and echoed through my skull. After no less than 20 minutes, I complained. The waiter blew it off and it continued for several more minutes. Our second meal was in the hotel's other restaurant for a breakfast buffet. There was a pretty decent looking spread and we were really excited. However, the food was pretty horrible. The eggs nearly made me sick and everything was vastly low in quality. Boooo! Our last meal was room-service the night before we left Ireland. I had injured my foot the day before and aggravated it during all the St. Paddy's Day celebrations. We placed our order and was told they would be up within the hour. Ninety minutes later, no food. I called down and was given excuses, even being told that it was already delivered. Finally, another 20 minutes later, we received our food. Extremely famished at this point, we were extremely disappointed to find the orders incomplete. Thankfully, however, they did correct the mistakes within five minutes. I think by then, they knew not to mess with me any longer! Overall, I did enjoy my stay there. Should I return, I will consider the Clontarf Castle. However, the likelihood of dining within the hotel during my visit is slim to none. read more

I said to Fausto, we must stay at a castle in Ireland, WE MUST! And so we did. The room wasn't big but I loved that it didn't have any cheesy paintings in it. Our 4-night stay felt short; we only showered and slept in it. Always a 'top of the mornin' to ya' from the staff every day (or night) we enter at 4/5am. Never had a meal here (not even breakfast, we were still on New York time) so I can't rate the Michelin star restaurant. We did have two cups of cappuccino while waiting for a friend in the lobby. That was good, but not so happy with the bill. LOL. We were here the last weekend of April Thursday - Monday and there seemed to be a party every night in both lounges. Should've crashed one or two! Loved that it was close to the airport (thank goodness because we woke up 1 hour late and almost missed our flight) but also only a 15 min drive into city center. Although we weren't in the hotel much, it was an enjoyable stay. And congrats on the 'Best Interior Design' award! The exterior is marvelous as well! I love this place - its grandness on a small scale and the fact that its so unexpected located as it is in the middle of a residential area. It's a lovely space to pop into for a bite to eat in the restaurant or bar and people from out of town seem to particularly love it (the Irish castle touristy charm of it all I suppose!) Hadn't been here in a few years but stopped by recently for some Sunday lunch and wasn't disappointed in the least. Love when you visit a place you recall so fondly and it lives up to your memories - doesn't happen enough! I had the seabass starter with pineapple salsa and a small crabcake. It was small and light but full of flavour. For mains I had roast lamb with duckfat roasties and veg. It was usual Sunday lunch fare but the lamb and veg were cooked so perfectly that it hit home notches above the usual carvery offering. A lovely strong Americano and a glass of lovely Malbec rounded out the meal and I pretty much felt like purring by this stage. All in all the Castle is a great spot for a meal, and one of my favourite hotels in Dublin. read more

I mean, what can I actually say about a castle...it's a castle and magnificent! Everything from the ambiance, the decor, the service, and the accommodations was truly impeccable. The beds were incredibly comfortable (which was truly needed after sleeping in some awful beds in Europe) and the rooms were regally decorated. I love how the castle integrates modernity into the antiquated charm because there was art everywhere. I especially loved the hanging art from the ceilings in the main hall. The ornate woodwork on the ceiling in the King's Bar was stunning and the food matched the environment. I had a steak sandwich with the most tender and flavorful sirloin steak which was perfectly cooked and topped with roasted tomatoes and crispy onions. The fries were awesome, piping hot, obviously homemade and only lightly salted which tickles my fancy. I also had the side of the truffle macaroni and cheese and while my waistline didn't need any more carbs, it sure was worth it. A great meal paired with a Smithwick Pale Ale and my life was complete while staying the night in the castle. I would highly recommend to anyone if they are looking for a magical experience while visiting Dublin or the surrounding area that they need to spend at least one night there. It truly was the perfect way to complete the week I spent in Ireland, and hats off to the staff for going above and beyond. Beautifully Spooky I had a great time when I stayed here during my time in Ireland. The outside of the hotel really does have the appearance of a Castel. It even has giant lion statues on both sides of the main entrance. At night this place can look spooky from the outside with the way the moon shadows over it. Once inside the hotel there are several windows to let in all the natural light. In the lobby there is a grand fireplace and ample seating. The employees will even bring you coffee and tea to enjoy for a minimal fee in this area. We spent most of our time here. This was partially due to having to wait a few hours before we could check into our room after being dropped off from the airport. There is also a cool bar on the property that offered a variety of local drinks that we enjoyed. The rooms are clean and a decent size which is all I need in a hotel room. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Dublin. read more

Pretty awesome hotel! The only thing that was upsetting was that we were only here for one night. We tried to make the most of the time by visiting every little different area in the castle and reading about the cool historic factoids at each designated area. Sounds weird, but I want to be bottle up the scent of the hotel and use it as perfume! We decided to stay here only because it was a castle and we thought it was something different, but I'm glad we did! The hotel was beautiful inside, the people were super friendly, and the food was delicious! There were 2 restaurants -you need a reservation for the Fahrentheit and the Knight's Bar which is more casual. The hotel was a mixture of modern and antique decoration and furniture with a color scheme of purple, gold, and silver. One downside is that it is near a residential area so it is a bit far from the Temple Bar area and other tourist attractions - about a $20 taxi ride. read more

The castle itself is beautiful. The room was very spacious. Wish they had king size beds but I know that can be uncommon in Europe. They gave us two doubles, after a long travel day the hubby and I didn't mind separate beds! The bed was very comfortable. I also wasn't able to find a hair dryer in our room (not crucial but would've been nice). The breakfast in the morning was lovely. **Update: Upon check out the representative was very nice and was sure to remove all additional items from our stay and the entire staff appeared more relaxed. Assumably they were definitely overbooked and understaffed the prior evening. Perhaps worth a try again?? Upgraded to theee stars from my original two.** After an amazing holiday in Ireland we planned to conclude our trip with our final night at the Clontarf Castle Hotel. What a disappointment. It appears they overbooked in other events and were unable to accommodate their other hotel guests. Here's some background on our evening. We arrived this afternoon at around 5pm and though check in was brief we were simply handed an envelope with the cards in it and a leaflet on the castle itself and sent on our way. I even had to inquire once dismissed as to which floor we were on! Ironically, our entire holiday prior to this was with "Air B&B" and we received better service through every one of the places we stayed than we did booking at the Clontarf Castle Hotel. So, needless to say, we settled into our room, read the manual provided, and decided to head to the more casual pub area for dinner. We sat at the bar and waited...and waited. We weren't the only ones waiting. There were a half dozen others! Once served (the bartender was apologetic) we mentioned that we planned on having dinner and asked if there was staff for us to sit outside at the tables there. He suggested we close out our tab with him and head outside and he would let the waitstaff know to serve us. After waiting a while outside (enough time to nearly finish my beverage) my husband went inside to check. He came out with menus and had been told that there was not ample wait staff to come table side. He brought menus and was told we could decide on our order and then go back in, let them know, and they would then deliver it to the table. We patiently waited for our meal. An HOUR later, my husband again went in to check if out meal had been forgotten. The staff said they would check on it and soon after our meals arrived. Loved this hotel! Pricier than I ever would pay for a regular hotel (because I never book fancy, expensive hotels), but unbelievably cheaper than the other castles that I found. Who doesn't want to stay in a castle while in Ireland? So I splurged for one night. The interior was very nice with some old castle walls/areas still intact though mostly modernized. The decor was awesome and there was plenty of sitting areas and a nice bar/lounge with friendly staff. Our bartender that night was wonderful. Friendly staff makes all the difference. My room was very nice although the bed was a bit too hard. The breakfast buffet was huge. You could make yourself a traditional Irish breakfast and then some. The parking lot was large and easy to access in comparison to every other hotel I stayed at here. read more

The small rooms are okay. But don't do that. Go big. Treat yourself. We tried 4 different types of rooms because of our trip. A small upgrade in price is a big upgrade in size. It's worth it. The staff is amazing x10. They have really good food both upstairs and downstairs. Celiac friendly. The beer and food isn't overpriced, so the neighbors come over for a pint and for large meals. I am so disappointed. My wife and I and another couple were set to stay there last month, but United Airlines had a delay causing us to miss our connection to Dublin from Newark. I immediately from the airport sent an email to the hotel and to the manager, but received no response. We were unable to get to Ireland at all and ended up being diverted to England two days later, and when the manager did respond, he cited their cancellation policy and refused to refund or credit towards another stay. I called Chase Rewards, who I booked this place through, and they said that the hotel marked us down as a no-show. Subsequent efforts to resolve were not successful, but rather were met with the type of responses that seemed were given numerous times to others. I will make it to Dublin next year . . . but will never consider this place. read more

Great staff rearranged our nights for us after Dublin airport closure left us 2 days behind, lent us books, and made change for the bus fares. Breakfast buffet included fresh fruit, yogurts, pastries and toast, eggs, sausages, cereals, fresh juices, and a great view. One word. AMAZING! It's gorgeous inside and out. The treated me so special for my birthday. Beautiful canopy bed that made me feel royal. Of my entire tour (two weeks five countries) I had the best sleep ever here. The views are amazing. The amenities are very nice. The manager gave me a couple of goodies for my birthday. Also the restaurant is delicious. I even wore a tiara around and they completely didn't make me feel weird. They made me feel special. Also the breakfast is great. I would have to agree with the previous reviews posted. I stayed this Valentine weekend and felt it a strange place to have a pint and the breakfast which cost €23 to non guests, was a disgrace! Rubbery eggs half cooked greasy rashers and black pudding that you could us as an ice hockey puck in the winter Olympics. Don't think you will be sleeping in an old school castle with ghosts and creaky doors and a draw bridge...oh no. This place, right in the middle of a residential area is part castle, mostly updated hotel. It's a very cool and amazing feeling to be in Dublin...and staying here makes it all that better. Yes it's not walking distance to anything BUT to experience their bus system is fun and exciting. The stop is a short walk and it's super safe. Oh and the hotel...rooms are well kept, spacious for Euro standards and have all the amenities you need. Staff is hit or miss with being friendly. I do recommend getting the experience of staying here but be advised it is expensive. The corridors are not made for a wide shouldered dude like me or if you are claustrophobic. They have a small fitness center which believe it or not I did use. There is a bar downstairs that is open to the guests (closed to public) after hours...almost like VIP. I did have breakfast which was my first "Irish" one, bacon and sausage and eggs and toast and coffee and black pudding which I stayed away from. Stayed for only one night and then hopped in my mini rental car made for midgets and hit the road. Tears come to my eyes on how much I miss it already! read more

Stayed at the Clontarf for two nights. We had an excellent time, especially dinner at the Fahrenheit Restaurant. The staff was wonderful and the food was even better. We also ate at the Knight's Bar. They had many beers on tap as well as delicious cocktails from the bar. The Christmas ambiance was wonderful throughout the hotel. Our complaints are that the bed was a bit too soft one side, probably an older mattress and they had construction going on at the hotel. The construction was very loud throughout the entire hotel but they did leave a nice note saying it would happen starting at 10am during the weekend and 9am during the week. read more

The Castle was my local watering hole with "the lads" for several years, and it's a great location for a few pints. It has a very different feeling to other local bars, with an older crowd made up of people who've been going for years, wedding parties, and international guests. An odd mix, but a fun one. Service is excellent- it was the first place, at age 18, where I was asked "can I interest you in another drink, sir?"- as you might expect from a four-star hotel. The restaurants are good, though a little expensive, and the bar prices are what you'd expect from a hotel as opposed to a pub. Top tip: there's a wonderful little spot in the main lobby, between the Knights Bar and the Indigo Lounge. It's an old chimney breast of solid stone which has been repurposed into a cosy, dim room for hushed conversations (or lively banter). Staff, I've been told, refer to it as the dungeon, but it's far more pleasant than that! See if it's free if you'd like a more intimate atmosphere for your drinks. read more

5 stars easily. We arrived around 10am after a very long plane ride from the States. They were very friendly and allowed us to check in immediately for free. This was a huge plus because the kids were at their limit after not sleeping all night. Beautifully decorated without being over the top. It was kind of fun seeing a doorman with a top hat on as well. The family room was very spacious and easily slept 4. The curved sitting chairs or chaises (not sure what to call them) in the room were very comfortable, as are many of the chairs throughout the castle. The room was very clean. We had a mini fridge that comes pre-stocked with waters, sodas and mini alcohol options. I didn't see a price list for these items though. The fridge is sensored, but we were told that we could still store a couple of items in it as they verify the accuracy of the sensors at the end of your stay. The food (especially the Irish stew and hamburgers) were delicious. The fish and chips was only so-so and soggy. It seems funny now, but we struggled with the lights. You have to leave your room key in a slot by the bathroom to get electricity. Also, the shower is kinda different. If you want the hand nozzle, you turn the water towards you...turning it away from you activates the normal showerhead. I really can't stress how friendly and helpful everyone was. The breakfast buffet was phenomenal imo. I don't understand why another reviewer thought it was subpar. Everything was fresh, from the juices to the pastries. There were so many choices. The flavors were wonderful and the atmosphere was unlike any buffet that I've been to before. It had a formal decor and the restaurant staff was very professional. It was a great breakfast to say the least. Overall 5 star experience and I would highly recommend them! read more

The castle itself is, I believe, about 900 years years old but you wouldn't want to stay in anything built back then without a wee bit of refurbishment. At this stage Clontarf Castle has been refurbished a number of times but most of the original structure still stands with the hotel built around it. I've never stayed here BUT I have attended: communions, confirmations, engagement parties, birthdays, 21sts, after-work pints and funeral-afters here. I've also both babysat in and been given a tour of the rooms. So I'm used to the place by now. For functions, Clontarf Castle is pretty great. They seem to be on top of things and the food is always lovely. I've never known anyone to have a bad experience with organisation or heard of any run-ins with staff, which is difficult to say about a lot of places. Recently, we did end up having a funeral-afters in the Indigo lounge, which, though trendy and quite opulent with red chandeliers, cushioned couches and purple wallpaper, was perhaps not all that suitable. Staying here is apparently quite nice. I can vouch for the rooms being pretty alright, ranging from your standard hotel room to some pretty fancy shmancy rooms. Friends say he room service is grand and mid-week/off season it's a pretty good price per night, considering. Overall I like Clontarf Castle and have umpteen pictures of myself posing with the stone lions outside! read more

Drinking a pint at Clontarf Castle is a little bit like eating a cheeseburger at a 5 star restaurant... you always feel a little bit out of place. But with such awe-inducing surrounds, how can you resist? A drink in the Knights Bar at the Clontarf Castle is one of those things you should put on your list of must-do's before you die! If you're going to be drinking in such breath-taking surrounds, you might as well order a drink to match, so why not branch out for a cocktail, or go for a quality white, rather than the house variety? We opted for the Lawson's Dry Hills Sav Blanc from NZ, which was a rewarding decision. An interesting crowd finds its way to the Clontarf Castle Hotel. A mix of wedding guests, families, older couples and locals can be found holding up the bar at any given moment, so no matter who you are you'll always kinda fit in here, even if you think you won't. Just make sure you go exploring around the hotel, or else your trip will be wasted! Check out the knights in shining armour hidden in little caverns, and the 'secret' room where you and your friends can pull up a seat and have a few bevvies in the comfort and solace of your cell-like private room! The staff are a little overattentive and annnoying (for the third time, yes, I am very happy sipping on my Cardonnae and NO I do not require anything further thank you very much!) but apart from that this place is a joyous experience and a must for any trip to Dublin. Roughly 20-25 minutes from the action in Dublin, the Clontarf Castle Hotel is a beautiful hotel with spacious, clean rooms, a great bar space, decent dining options, and 5-star vibes. It's a little far from town for my liking, and we often had to wait ~10 minutes for a cab. Also, the mattress was lumpy, and the water in our shower never got very hot. This place gains points for historical significance. It modernized so well I doubted that it had ever been a real castle, but they have details of its legacy on the wall in the lobby. Recommended for families, solo travelers, or couples who don't mind being a little off the beaten path. read more

I have been here a few times recently and will not be returning again! The service is awful!! Very slow and unfriendly staff. I asked for a glass of coke and received half a glass!!(pic below) when i questioned it they said it was from a 200ml bottle.. they should really use a different glass if thats the case and not charge €3.70 for it. I also ordered something that never came and when i asked about it the guy said 'oh ill check on it' and never came back to me. I then had to go and find him myself and when i did he said'i have asked them to make it again'. No apology from him either. I asked for a refund instead. My mom and I were really impressed the moment we walked in the door of Clontarf Castle Hotel. The hotel has beautiful, lavish décor. We were able to get a room quickly and carry our things up in an elevator which was nice after several bed and breakfast stays. The staff was happy to recommend nearby food and make reservations. The rooms were ultra modern with neat light fixtures and lighting in the bed frame itself. The bathroom was decent size, but I did not like the water pressure nor the difficulty of actually using this shower. It was a complex system. :P The room had a decent size TV with satellite channels. The room also had A/C and this was a first for us in Ireland. It was rather refreshing. :) We slept on fairly comfortable beds and it felt very sanitary as well as safe. I look forward to staying here again in the future. read more

We stayed here the last (we thought -- thanks, Air Canada for the lousy service!) night of our 10 day trip around Ireland, as a surprise for the family (my adult daughter said it was her favorite lodging of the trip) and because it was a quick convenient jaunt to the airport the next morning. Finding it was a little tricky but we made it. Others have described it, so won't go into all that. Our experiences with the staff were outstanding, from check in to check out. The highlight was losing our video camera. After we got back home, we realized it wasn't in our luggage, and assumed it had fallen out at the Contarf, or the horrible hotel that Air Canada put us in the next night, or the rental car. Of the three emails, only the Clontarf responded; Natalie said they had it and would mail it to us at no cost. It showed up a week later. How often does that happen? I'd like to point out the cool power outlets they have in each room: not just the UK style and European style, but they have US outlets running on 110V in the wardrobe. Never seen that before in all my travels; brilliant. Not so brilliant: the lack of enough bedside outlets, the scourge of hotels around the world. They were only on one side of the bed, and my wife and I both need to plug in a machine to sleep. The front desk came up with a solution: a power strip with a very long cord. So all was well. All in all, a fun place, and it was far from the most expensive we stayed at. We got the package with the free bottle of wine, and ate at the Knight's Bar. All good. read more

Wow, what a great start to my Ireland trip. Got a small room on the top floor - so much purple! Room was clean and had all the things I needed. Staff was super helpful. Liked all the restaurants on site as well. Farenheit Grill Great space. Liked the 2 course option. Complimentary bread was delicious! Came with a tomato paste spread, herb butter and herb oil. The water pressure for the shower could have been a little better (but the glass splash door design was inadequate to allow for more than the drizzle of water that was available). Oh you want a castle, we'll give you a castle. Beautiful castle, my review here is based on an event that I attended here and also their bar... I've never had the pleasure of staying overnight here. Their function room space is fantastic and as I was close to the organiser of the event, she echoed great comments about the staff and their willingness to help, go that extra mile, etc. Throughout the dinner, we had prompt table service from the attentive wine pouring to the serving of our 4 course meal, the waiters were so polite and professional. The place definitely oozes grace, I've also been here just for a bit of lunch and the bar / lounge area in here is fantastic. In a word, poor. We arranged a family dinner here to celebrate my grandparents Golden wedding anniversary. The food was substandard given the per head rate being charged. Many of the starters were burnt and the mains were dry. We had organised for wine to be served on a as needed basis. Most of the party only received one glass of wine despite there being no limit to the amount allowed to be opened. Poor attention again by the staff. Once the meal was finished the staff tried to move us from our table while my grand parents gave speeches. It was terribly rude and inconsiderate. We were not told when booking that the table would be needed back quickly. We moved to an area in the bar where things were pleasant until we were told that the tables were needed and we were once again moved by the manager. All in all, the food was below par the staff were rude and frankly showed no interest in the event being celebrated. My grandparents held the reception to their wedding in clontarf castle 50 years ago and what was suppose to be a celebration of this anniversary ended up be a display is how not to treat a large party of paying guests. read more

This was the most wonderful place to stay. The staff were very professional and accommodating. My wife can not stop talking about the place to her friends and on our next trip to Dublin will absolutely be staying here again. If you are considering a stay, would suggest booking sooner rather than... as they fill up quickly. This is a regular venue for wedding receptions, events and such so large blocks or rooms get booked. My wife had always wanted to stay in a castle and this is the real deal but with all the modern and very high end amenities built in. I had a lovely stay. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and clean. And the Castle has so much character and is in a very nice neighborhood that was a delight to take walks in. The food in the restaurant and pub was very good as well. If I'm ever in Dublin again, I will most certainly be staying there again. The only negative is that it was a little further from the main part of the city than I would have liked, but cab fares were very reasonable. read more

First off, I miss Ireland, secondly I miss Clontarf Castle Hotel. This place was simply beautiful and FUN! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was super cozy and comfy. Felt like home and not a hotel. They have a couple restaurants in the hotel as well. Knights Bar is awesome. The food and drinks are superb. The indigo Lounge does a great café style thing in the mornings. I never checked out the Fahrenheit Grill but I doubt that it couldn't be any less the amazing. I also loved how this was pretty close walking distance to jump on the shuttle to take you downtown. And the courtyard had a plethora of magpies. Beautiful, wonderful experience all around. But thank you Clontarf for adding on to a wonderful experience! read more
