If I could give negative stars, I would…read more The Gibson Hotel in Dublin was by far the worst hotel I've stayed at during my trip to Ireland - and this is my 5th hotel here. Every other property I visited was warm, welcoming, and accommodating. The Gibson was the exact opposite. From the moment I arrived, the staff were cold, unhelpful, and unwelcoming. At check-in, I was handed a key with barely a word and simply pointed toward the lift. No offer to assist with luggage, no information about the hotel, no sense of hospitality whatsoever. Throughout my stay, whenever I passed through the lobby, staff either ignored me entirely or deliberately looked busy to avoid interacting. I even sat in the lobby for a while just observing, and it wasn't just me - the staff treated all guests this way. Aloof, uninterested, and uncaring. Hospitality is supposed to be about warmth and service, but here it felt like guests were an inconvenience. This hotel was the least accommodating, least hospitable, and least welcoming of my entire trip, and it wasn't even close. Ireland is known for its friendliness and warmth - but you will not find it here. Do yourself a favor and stay literally anywhere else. I strongly do not recommend the Gibson Hotel.

We found the express shuttle, paid for the tickets at a kiosk, stepped right onto the shuttle (amazing luck), stood for the 11 minute ride, and got off across the street from the hotel. The longest part was not wanting to jay walk as our first act in another country, so we walked up, across, and down to the hotel entrance. When we arrived, our rooms were ready (amazing luck). We showered and took a nap for an hour or two, then hit the town running. While we were there, we saw a historical recreation ship moored very close to the hotel and the river walk had a festival. The hotel had flowers in the lobby so you could take on and brighten your room and free wifi. They also had a (fake) sheep reading a newspaper full of his escapades. While one review said it's not in the city center, we had a great time and it's a few blocks from the green line step-on-step-off bus tour. We had dinner at a restaurant that we could see from our hotel room. I would stay there again.

Overall, the room was okay and you can tell it was refurbished... but again for the price, it didn't seem justified. Although Dublin is cold/windy/was even hailing during our May 2016 stay here, it was worth a 1 night layover (and a great way to adjust with jetlag before the big trip began). As for the Maldron, it is imperative to take a Taxi if you are traveling with any more than 2-3 people, because it ends up being cheaper than taking the airport bus. I believe it was about 35 Euros for the cab ride each way, a smooth 35 minute ride. The hotel is a bit aged but had recently been gutted. It is clean, in a safe, quiet (Extremely quiet) neighborhood. If you enjoy walking, it is an easy 15-25 minute stroll to the main downtown area and restaurants. There is also a tram within 5 minutes of the hotel. We found that late at night it was difficult to get a bite to eat near the hotel and thus had to walk into the main strip/downtown area. The hotel staff are kind and quick to respond to any requests and issues. One note is that when going to the airport, if you want to save 2 Euros hail a cab yourself, because any time you have to call ahead of time for a cab the 2 Euros fee is charged!

My room was spacious and comfortable and it had all the standard features including a hair dryer, tea kettle, and a fan, which will come in handy in the warmer months. I am not a fan of the double faucets in Europe as it is difficult to wash your face when you have hot and cold separate. There was an issue with the light switches and bedside lamp that the hotel was quick to come and fix, but it would have been nice to have a note by the switches that showed which switch was for which light. Very confusing turning them on and off trying to figure them out. One of the absolute best things about my stay was the shower pressure. OMG - absolutely the best shower I think I've ever had. The products in the bathroom are very good quality as well and smell amazing. There are no washcloths, but I came prepared with my own. The hotel has live music in the lounge every night and the "Celtic Nights" dance shows. I didn't see the show but I did enjoy the live music while having dinner and/or drinks a couple of nights. I'd definitely recommend this hotel for a stay in Dublin.

As popular as this place is supposed to be, perfectly snuggled in Dublin's city center, it still leaves much to be desired. Upon arrival, everything went well. The front desk associate who checked me in was pleasant and efficient from the moment I approached the counter. The dilemma began after I went to the first room I was assigned (room 420), which was tiny and cramped but that wasn't too surprising as some European hotels are. However, the floor was sticky, literally sticky and as soon as I removed a hanger the entire rack collapsed. On top of this not being the type of room I pre-booked, I swiftly gathered my things and went back down to the front desk to inform them about what happened and request a new/better room. The manager then stepped in and instead of honoring my legitimate request, instead he said I will escort you back to room 420 to see if it can be fixed (as if he did not believe what I expressed). So, we went back to the room, he saw the problem and said if I could wait he'd send a maintenance guy in 15 minutes to fix the closet rack. I said no, I would like a new room. Then, I was given a new room in another part of the building that required two elevator trips. It was a trek, which is cute in the beginning, but dare not forget anything in your room. You'll be left contemplating if it's worth the back and forth. This room was much bigger, much better, much cleaner, all around what I'd booked and expected from the jump. The manager was not as kind or accommodating as the associate I interacted with initially. So already, day one, this hotel was losing stars. I was told the journey to the newer rooms is so long and so far because some of the hotel is under constructions and they haven't connected everything. Then, the heat in my new room was not working. It was extremely cold. I called the front desk, the maintenance guy came, and he basically said it's a big room so the best we can do is bring a space heater. That did help tremendously. Even the hallways (old side vs new side) were worlds apart. The old side, which I had to pass through to get to the second elevator, had a very strong and strange odor. The new side had a fresh smell daily. The housekeeping staff were courteous. Tip: if you ever lodge at this hotel, make sure to request a NEW room, and you'll know if it's new because those room numbers have 4 digits. If you're given a 3 digit room be warned and beware. Always advocate for yourself! The best part of my stay and the reason why I am giving 3 stars instead of 2 is for the breakfast. It was delicious and the hours were good (645am to 1030am).

We paid for an extra night so we could access our room early, but due to a flight delay, we ended up arriving around standard check-in time. Unfortunately, the hotel didn't offer any grace, credit, or goodwill gesture, which felt a bit rigid given the premium price point. Still, the stay was comfortable and the service was strong overall. We'd stay again for the location, design, and bar -- and hope for a bit more flexibility next time.
