We had a scheduled design consultation appointment with them, got a call after waiting 1 hour 20 minutes saying "do you want to reschedule?" When asked if we could speak to their manager about our experience, they said we would relay your message but they are not going to be "available" to talk to customers. No concern for customers, no courtesy of asking how they can fix it, no apology. If this was their behavior on the very first day, we are glad we did not do business with them. Designer Kelly was wonderful throughout the entire process. She came up with a great design to fit our needs for a walk-in master closet. She asked many questions about how much space we need for clothes, shoes, bags etc, and then made the design. The space is working perfectly for us because of her expertise. The space created for ironing is such a nice add-on! Kelly even took her own time to send me ideas for chandeliers, benches etc. She truly loves her job and still thinks of her customers long after making the sale. The installers were talented, professional and did a great job cleaning at the end of the install. We had a couple tweaks, and they were taken care of immediately. They have a great design review process where after the original is made, it goes through several other designers just to ensure something isn't missed before it is approved. I used them years ago, and their product held up for 20 plus years, until we remodeled the closet. We even moved it from one home to another. they designed a lovely built in desk system with shelves and lighting. but when it came to installation, we have had many problems. the wood was scuffed and need replacement, the lighting didn't work and one of the panels of the desk was not cut correctly. they have been here 3 times and still no corrections. now I'm waiting 2more weeks. would not recommend them, sorry. read more

I had 2 closets done, one of which was a large walk in. I had a very tight timeline to get the install completed and they were able to beat that timeline. So they had a sales rep come out who smelled like BO on one occasion and we asked for someone else. We did a few projects close to $10k and the manager came out and she was not pleased with the work. Yet we are the issue? California Closets and the new company ClosetTec inside Jordan's are so much more efficient and much better at maximizing the space of a specific area. Loved the personal service the designer gave me. She listened to what I wanted and gave me several options for my master bedroom closet and the pantry closet. The quality of the material is great and I love the gray for the master bedroom which matches the bathroom. I chose white for the pantry and am very happy with it as it matches the white cabinetry in the kitchen. Both closets are just perfect! Our designer did an exceptional job and our installer was top notch. I thought for all we got the value was awesome! We have another area to do and we will definitely hire Closets By Design to reconfigure the space. Their service, quality and value are unmatched. Closets by Design is still in the process of installing two closets in my home. Their first install date was Oct 24. They were unable to complete the main closet because the measurements they initially took were off. And barely any work was done in the guest closet, as it was drawn incorrectly, with a ceiling sprinkler on the wrong side in the picture, so measurements were off and they were unable to put anything together. Weeks later in their second visit, they extended the main closet, but forgot the bridges, and brought incorrect materials for the guest closet so nothing at all was done. Two weeks later they came back for a third service and again forgot the bridges for the main closet and again brought incorrect materials for the guest closet. They are now only able to come back December 12th to complete the service that has been ongoing for almost two months at that point and I have no confidence that they will get it done in their fourth visit. I paid 50% deposit when I signed on, and after the first visit they charged me the remaining cost excluding $500. There is a lot more than $500 worth of work to complete, and it's been so frustrating that I would rather they take back the materials they've left in the guest closet (see attached photo) and get a refund. In 3 service visits, I still don't have a closet that is 100% completed. I would not recommend Closets by Design until they can get organized. read more

This is something of a good news/bad news experience. Overall, the good outweighs the not-so-good. I wanted closets, some drawers, bookshelves and a space for the TV in my home office. I also wanted to get out of sight the steel shelving with tools, hardware, similar household storage. I contacted another local closet provider, who wanted me to take the dimensions and do the whole process online and by phone. Closets-by-Design sent a designer to take measurements and show me different materials and options. She then sent a pdf with a detailed design and pricing. I don't like the game with the "full price" but this discount, plus another discount, but that seems to be common in this industry. With a price between $4000 and $5000, I signed on. But wait--this was the end of January. My installation date was set for early June! (I knew this before I gave a 50% deposit). Ouch! Shortly before the appointed date, I was contacted with a four-hour arrival window. The installer--one man-- arrived within that window and got to work. Here's where problems began. Apparently, the designer used inaccurate dimensions, so the middle section--where I planned to put the TV and the two wine racks, would have to be several inches narrower. First, this meant he would have to take the shelves and doors fabricated for the original dimension back to the shop for adjusting. He returned a week later with an assistant to finish the job. Between the two visits it probably took six or seven hours. Second, I was left with mostly what I expected, but with a section that just barely fit my current TV, with no margin for a larger one some day. And one of my existing wine racks would not fit in the center closet, necessitating buying a new one with less capacity. Also, less room for books or other objects on the shelves. I waited a few days to see if anyone would contact me to apologize about the impact of the measurement error or offer any compensation, but that didn't happen. Fortunately, the credit card they had used for the deposit had expired, so they needed a new date for the final charge. I emailed customer support with my dissatisfaction and was called with an explanation of the error. I explained that I did not get what I thought I would have and, given the actual dimension, understood they couldn't enlarge the room. But I should have known what I was getting before I signed up. I asked for, and received, a modest reduction in the final balance. So, bottom line: Fine product and what passes these days for a reasonable price. But, as with any time working with a contractor, things can go wrong. The local Closets by Design might have been more proactive but tuned out to be ultimately responsive. With these reservations, I could recommend them. read more

A lot of cubes that don't help to improve the space inside of the closets Designer came to my place and me and my wife had something in mind that she said it could be done and we agreed Couple of months later she called us and told the design we wanted was not possible and came with a solution that served them not us the client. I just want my money back and to cut ties with this terribly managed company. They treat their workers poorly, as evidenced by high turnover. Update: an installer finally came and fixed most but not all issues- I am happy with what he did, but he did not bring two parts at the time of install. CBD refused to return my request for a phone call and did not drop off two missing parts as promised. CBD then sent my outstanding balance straight to collections. I really feel sorry for whoever owns this company. I really do. Gia, head of operations will argue with the customer until she is blue in the face. She has no regard for the customers true feelings of what they are getting. If she would for one minute be quiet and listen to the real issues going on she just might understand. The value of this stuff is really embarrassing. Day "1" my unit i waited "2" months for was broken, not aligned or connected in the corners. They scratched my new walls installing the unit. She insisted that she would talk with me after they came back twice to repair and replace some bad broken partical boards and cut new pieces that fit. No, she never did call me back. Leaving me even more frustrated. I know she will go far in life, I just hope she stays there... if anyone bothers reading this, save your hard earned money and look elsewhere for a high quality product. I met with a designer in May to have closets installed in 2 of my bedrooms. The install date was made for November. By early November i moved into the house and got a feeling for what was needed and decided the 2nd closet was unnecessary. I called to cancel the 2nd closet knowing i would forfeit my deposit. I was told i could but before doing so, they would have the designer contact me to go over other options. 3 weeks later i never heard from her. I called back to move forward with cancelling and was told no. I would have to pay the remainder on the closet even though my install date was more than a month and a half away (it was moved to end if Jan). Please do not waste your time or money. You can create the same look with do it yourself options. They have precut closets you can get from hardware stores like Lowes and Home Depot for less than 10 percent of what you pay a closet service. read more

I contacted Closets by Design on 5/27 and ultimately was given an in-person, in-home appointment for 6/1. I emailed a photo of the unit I wanted the same day, 5/27. At the meeting, Deborah took measurements and spent most of the time drawing a diagram on white grid carbon copy paper (which has a yellow second copy page). I received the unreadable (judge for yourself) yellow carbon copies. She then put lots of really high prices ranging from $8970 to $12,558 for the "list" prices of the unit in four "collections" and then provided "factory discount" prices (40% off) and "coupon" prices for the lowest two "collections." She told me that I might qualify for an additional discount, so I thought the unit price would be around $4k. A few days later (6/16), I was told that what I wanted was $5600! I told her I didn't have $4000 to spend, let alone $6000. So next thing I knew, on 6/20, she told me she would give me a contractor's discount and the price would be $4335 (note we had not talked about color, hardware, or fascia (that only came up later!). That Sunday, the price changed again and was $4385 "Flat-faced doors and drawers, color or edge upgrade, fascia to ceiling. These are the June promos. If you can decide between now and June 30, I can hold this price. After June, I will need to reprice. What color did we discuss when we met? I don't think you wanted white." (No, I didn't want white) Next thing I knew, I received eight emails with photos of different colored closets (several mislabeled), and the price of the unit has now become $4500 (really $4582.62), at which point I emailed and said that I was no longer interested. On 6/29, I received a phone call requesting that I provide feedback on the service I had received. I initially said no, but then, after hanging up the phone thought better of it and called back. I shared the information above. Kara asked me to give her time and said she would review my case and see if she could do anything. I agreed and emailed her a summary of what I had shared in our conversation, the original photo of the unit I wanted, and a PowerPoint diagram I had created. She emailed me back the same day asking me if fewer closet doors would be acceptable and then told me that I could have the unit for $3630.90. I was ecstatic until she emailed me back telling me she had forgotten to include the backing so that the price would be $4043.90. At this point, I had had enough. Bottom line, if you decide to work with this company, go in with your eyes open and realize that nothing has a set price. read more

I recommend that you do NOT hire Closets by Design to do anything in your home. We hired them to put up shelving in our basement. They charged us 50% before doing any work and set an install date. They called a week ahead of time to let me know that they'd be there at 9am on the install date, so I rearranged my work schedule to be home that day. They didn't come until 4:30 pm, and just dropped off materials with no work done. They said they'd come back the next day to finish the work so I took a second day off of work. They arrived and finished about 75% of the work because they didn't bring enough materials with them. They left and said they'd call with a third install date. When I didn't hear from them after a week, I called, and they had already scheduled a day without telling me. In the meantime, they charged the remaining balance to our credit card. When they arrived (my third day off of work), it was a different person then the original installers, and after an hour he let me know that he was leaving because he didn't bring the right materials with him. I called to complain and they told me that they "promised" to be able to finish the job the next time (which will be my fourth day off of work). This hasn't happened yet. I am very happy we decided to use closets by design. We received quotes from 3 different companies when looking to redo our closet. Our designer at CBD went above and beyond to create an amazing design that fit within our budget. We ultimately selected CBD due to our designer. The installer called out sick the day of our installation, but they were able to have another installer come out to complete it the same day. The installers that came out were quick, professional and did a great job. I have attached photos of the finished closet. We did remove everything before they came for the install and patched and painted the space ourselves, which I would recommend everyone doing as it takes time to properly patch, sand and paint. Buyer beware...horrible customer service! I discovered Closets By Design through a mailer; after making an initial appointment I met with the design representative who was delightful while providing me with a great closet system design. Despite the two month wait to install the system I went ahead with the purchase. This is where the experience went down hill... Days before the planned install on September 3rd, I received a voice mail stating they still had not received the materials and were rescheduling for September 17th. They did not ask if this would work for me but simply scheduled it. Unfortunately I had to call to let them know that they had chosen the ONLY day of the entire month that I was not available. After asking if the installer could be let in and left to his own devices in my house without supervision they finally offered a reschedule date of October 3rd. A full month after the initial install date that had been scheduled two months prior. They repeatedly told me that the delay in materials was not their fault and pointed fingers at their parent company citing the pandemic as the cause. At this time I requested to speak with a manager but was denied. I also stated that they did have the option of juggling their install schedule to give priority to my install before others that had been sold after my system. Again, deaf ears. When they called the week prior to confirm they were actually coming on October 3rd I stated that I thought I should get a discount for the inconvenience but was told the manager would not allow it, again "the manager" would not come to the phone I was also told that I WAS LUCKY that I actually had scheduled it for October 3rd as if I had accepted their suggested date of September 17th they would have had to reschedule the install for a SECOND time as the materials had just arrived. Finally the install day arrived. Long and short of it....one of the shelves was installed in a damaged state and my closet ceiling (brand new construction) was damaged during the install. I refused to sign off on my balance due that day asking that their manager call me to discuss the situation. A representative did call...but not the manager! They made arrangements to mail out a replacement shelf that their installer would swap out on October 14th. They also stated that he would repair the ceiling.. (Mind you I was out an additional $45 as I had to purchase the special order ceiling paint only sold by the gallon). When the installer arrived to repair the damages he discovered that the replacement shelf was actually more damaged than the original; he also knew nothing about the ceiling repair but fortunately had some spackle with him that he used to fill the hole - I had to repaint it myself. I also gave up on the shelf and acquiesced to the keeping the original damaged shelf as I just decided to give up. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere when considering a company to choose for a closet system. This company is incompetent and delivers inferior customer service. read more
