They turned an awkward space under the stairs and attached space into a very functional closet and storage area. While my master walk in closet was functional, I was hoping to better utilize my space. I called closet by design as I saw all the great reviews and a few days later a salesperson named Jen came over. She measured everything and then spent a couple hours in my closet. With my budget in mind she designed a walk in closet that met my needs. I wasn't sure if I wanted the basic white which is tier 1, the lowest priced material. We then talked about tier 2 and tier 3 and I ended up selecting the third tier as I wanted grey with a wood grain look. Actually, I thought I wanted the cream wood grain and Jen suggested that I head to the showroom in Mequon which I'm so glad I did! It turned out I didn't care for the cream much as the sample is just too small to determine color/design. I was greeted by a nice woman named Cindy who is one of the owners. She talked me through the hardware choices for my drawers and allowed me to switch out for brass instead of silver. Then, the other owner Doug came out. Talk about friendly and passionate about his business! Cindy and and Doug are a married couple who have owned and operated CBD for a few years. Doug offered to take us on a tour of his facility which I greatly appreciated. Doug explained that they have owned CBD for the past few years and purchase the wood locally in Chicago. They have top notch CNC machinery that enables them to do triple the number of jobs they previously could do. He pointed out they hire their own guys and have their own trucks. Everything looked like it was well run as it was very clean & organized! After the tour, they looked at our closet plans and suggested we replace drawers with a hamper unit after talking through the design. They were adamant that we love our closet and allowed us to make changes like the different hardware for drawers and more. Now for more details about my experience: Scheduling....they went above and beyond to bump up our install date from early April to mid-March. This was greatly appreciated as we wanted to get the closet installed prior to our spring break. Install - 2 employees called the morning of to let me know they would arrive around 11 am. 2 young men arrived with everything in hand to do the install and they worked together for 2 hours straight to get the master walk in closet done. When the project was completed they had me walk through to ensure I was satisfied. It looked beautiful and I love the wood grain grey! I asked them about working for CBD and they raved about how great of a company it is to work for, commenting on what a great guy Doug is. This goes a long way with me as I really like supporting local, small businesses, especially ones that are well run by good people. I would recommend them 100 times over and I strongly suggest you contact CBD for any closet, garage, kitchen or organizational needs. Truly a full-service company - we just had our 6th project completed by Closets by Design last week. Our installer, Jake, did a fantastic job, taking his time to make cut outs for the outlets. When the project was completed, he made a recommendation that we have a trim piece along the desk. Our house is over 100 years old and the floors and walls are uneven (especially in the corner where we had this desk placed). He discussed options, placed the order, and had another tech come out today (the next business day) to install the trim piece. It was the perfect finishing touch and we could not be happier with how this project turned out. We had intiially ordered a desk from a furniture company, but the shelf and drawer sizes were all wrong and some of the drawers didn't open all the way. Closets by Design gave us the option to purchase a truly custom desk. read more

Stay away- this company is awful. I've tried for months to get the closet they installed fixed without success. They have no-showed appointment times leaving me waiting hours for nothing. They showed up the next time without the proper equipment to fix it. Then they 'misfiled' paperwork causing a month delay in getting board recut. Finally they did a reinstall and it turned out worse than the first. Broken board patched with putty & drawers that done function. It's been a total of 4 installs that haven't fixed the problem. I have had to clear and put back clothes 4 times now for all these appointments. It's been days out of my life wasted. Dave the installation manager & Doug the owner keep making promises to call me to fix this and never call back. The product is poor quality - lots of chips, dents and scratches. The installers are not well trained to complete their work in a professional manner. It's been a complete nightmare. I'm left with a horrible looking and non-functioning product after paying thousands of dollars. Save yourself money & headaches and go with a different company. read more

I was very pleased with Closet By Design's service and product. I wanted to surprise my wife with the gift of a new closet. I met with Carrie, the designer, and she was very professional. What impressed me was that she wasn't trying to upsell me. Almost the opposite, she sensed I was trying to keep the price down, and she made smart recommendations about what I might consider and what I should not. On the day of installation, the installer arrived right on time. He got the job done, including pulling out the old closet hardware, in a bit over five hours. I was pleased with how he cleaned up the space when complete. When he was done, the closet looked great and our apartment was left in great shape. My wife was surprised and loved all the additional storage capacity. We replaced a single rod and shelf with three closet portions--one tall rod, one double rod, and a stack of shelves for shoes, toiletries, and other items. I had no idea how much more efficiently we could use the space--even though the size of the closet didn't change, we can fit much more into it without it feeling crowded. I'd use Closet by Design again if we ever decide to improve another closet in our home. read more

I worked with Jon, a designer out of the North Chicago office, who was able to meet me on-site and work out all of the details of three separate closet spaces including a beautiful linen cabinet piece for the master bathroom. Jon put a lot of forethought into the design and considered minuscule details such as adding an extra inch of height for long hanging dresses and does the homebuyer hang his pants folded or lengthwise. Our designer, Carrie took a lot of time getting to know what type of organization we were looking for in our closets; measuring boot height, checking what type of hanging/cubby space we needed and she had it sketched out right while we were planning. That was perfect because I got to see and tweak everything before it went to the carpenters for prepping. Carrie was so much fun to work with and very knowledgeable about their product...she made the planning a fun experience! Our installers; Chris, Max and Tom were TOP NOTCH! I would not recommend Closet by Design in Mequon. The employees had a very hard time understanding design execution. The installation was a horrible experience. Basic cabinets were replaced over and over again as the installers seemed to mess up and damage almost everything that was being installed. Unfortunately the owner does not over see the projects/employees very well. I will never be using this business again. read more

Here is something remarkable about Closets by Design. I was having new red oak floor installed in our master bedroom and master closet before my install date for the closet. I had to have their carpenter come 3 weeks ahead of my scheduled install date to do the demolition of the old closet. This would make it easier for the new closet install if the new floors were already installed. CBD had to remove the old shelving unit as the new shelving unit had different dimensions. They understood my delima and had a carpenter come the NEXT Day, Saturday, to do the demo work. Now, that is great service!! Finally, the install date came and the carpenter transformed the space to a luxury room. I even bought a chandelier from Ferguson's (see Kathryn) to complete the glam look! Closets by Design called the day before as promised to advised install time. They said between 1 and 3. I received a few phone calls from numbers I didn't know that morning. At 10 am the door bell rang it was Jacob the installer. He had tried to call me but I didn't answer. He was finished with his morning install and then came to see if it was alright to start mine. Of course it was. So after I gave him instructions as to where to park, he carried the stuff in and began. He was done at 11:15. He was polite, friendly, efficient and did a wonderful job. He was neat, wiped everything down and had a vacuum to clean out the doors but all my outlets are hard to get to so I told him I would do that. I had two closet doors and clothes rod which needed to be taken out and he volunteered to take them to dispose of them. Something I would have a hard time doing. I very much enjoyed my experience with Closet by Design and would use them again and recommend them. My daughter used that other closet company and mine is just as nice as hers and a lot less money read more
